The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Not that I'm joining the bandwagon or anything but I must say that this film absolutely lived up to all the hype it created prior to its release.

I've seen all the Batman movies that have been made (well, only those beginning from the one which starred Michael Keaton) and I do admit that I have enjoyed watching each one of them. this recent installment would probably be the most chaotic and disturbing of them all, but it might also be the most heart-wrenching.

The movie started great, viewers get to see what atrocities the Joker is capable of, but I thought the next few minutes were a bit dragging. But all that can be forgiven since the rest of the movie was full of twists and turns that you would feel as if the Joker is playing one of his jokes on you.

Christian Bale, IMO, takes the place of Michael Keaton for being the best actor who played the caped crusader (yup, Keaton was my favorite Batman, lol). Bale's performance was very subtle, yet gripping and strong. Heath Ledger, indeed, gave the performance of his life on this film. His role on Brokeback Mountain may have been difficult, but his portrayal of the Joker is no doubt the best I've seen him in. I would not say that he did better than Jack Nicholson since I think they played the role differently. Nicholson was the more the playful, whimsical type, while Ledger was a lot darker, more like vengeful and uncaring. Aaron Eckhart was a big surprise for me. I didn't think he can make that transition from a good guy to villain but he was just as convincing. The rest of the cast, returnees such as Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine provided a strong support cast that made the movie even more brilliant.

Now will there be a next one? Unlike the end of Batman Begins, there was a tell-tale sign of a sequel. As for this one...I really didn't see any or I might have just missed it therefore, gives me a good reason to go back to the cinema and watch it again. Which I certainly be most happy to do. :D

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
If I had seen this last year, I would have said it was the best movie of 2008. Technically, it was released in 2008 so I guess it may be the best movie I've seen in 2008. Lol. Some would probably say this movie is overrated, with Cate Blanchett and of course Brad Pitt as the leads and David Fincher directing it but I beg to disagree. All I can say is that its one movie that is so different from the ones I had seen - even if some say that it is the new Forrest Gump. The script may have been a bit mediocre for such a wonderfully-written and directed story but I wouldn't have preferred it any other way. It thought it was going to be a heavy drama but there were just enough scenes that would make you laugh. Watching the film is a great journey so go see it. I'm even considering buying a dvd copy.

The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (2002,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers
my favorite LOTR movie amongst the trilogy. i was just so relieved that gandalf came back to save the fellowship!
4
I Am Sam (2002,  PG-13)
I Am Sam
i seldom watch dramatic films but this movie pulled a string in my heart. i feel so much for penn's character because it shows how great love is that it can defy even psychological illness.
5
50 First Dates (2004,  PG-13)
50 First Dates
this 2nd team up of drew and adam is a hit. as always, adam sandler gives a performance that would not only make your stomach ache of laughter but also make your heart flutter with so much mush. drew was cute and funny too. an original plot, outstanding main characters and an equally funny supporting cast, noteworthy of course is rob schneider, plus a listenable soundtrack spell box office success~!
6
The Matrix Reloaded (2003,  R)
The Matrix Reloaded
there's just so many unforgettable fight scenes in this movie that are probably the best computer-aided fight scenes ever!
7
Jerry Maguire (1996,  R)
Jerry Maguire
i don't believe other poeple saying that tom cruise can't act because in this movie he played the character so convincingly. i love his smile!
8
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
the scenery is so breathtaking! i'm not a big johnny depp fan but i really find his performance in the potc movies to be so natural and funny! i cant wait for the third one!
9
The Rock (1996,  R)
The Rock
this is my favorite action movie off all time. nicholas cage, sean connery and ed harris gave convincing performances while michael bay's direction was impressive.
10
Kung Fu Hustle (2005,  R)
Kung Fu Hustle
the funniest martial arts movie i have seen as of yet! an excellent performance and direction by stephen chow. all the characters in the movie are rather unique and unforgettable. one of the best movie plots there is too! i really hope stephen chow makes another movie of this sort.
11
Happy Feet (2006,  PG)
Happy Feet
I seldom watch animations for film but Happy Feet is my favorite animated movie of all time. Not only is it visually entertaining, it also has a heart-warming storyline which is pretty inspiring even if your not an emperor penguin.
The characters are also memorable...my favorite was Ramone, who was voiced by none other Robin Williams (who actually did two more characters in the film).
It also has an okay soundtrack which showcases recordings by nicole kidman, hugh jackman, brittany murphy and robin williams.
And of course, baby penguins are so cute!
12
The Day After Tomorrow (2004,  PG-13)
The Day After Tomorrow
this movie is very heart-warming. nothing touches me more than the love of a parent to his child. though it may be one of the saddest and unthinkable disasters that could happen, the courage love and hope the characters showed in this movie will inspire one to keep the faith.
13
Saw (2004,  R)
Saw
this movie is my favorite horror/suspense/thriller movie of all time. aside from the mind-blowing twist, it gave birth to one of cinema's most unforgettable villains Jigsaw.. tobin bell is so perfect for this role even just his voice is enough to give you the creeps! definitely is going to be another successful horror franchise.
14
First Knight (1995,  PG-13)
First Knight
i was always fascinated by the story of king arthur and his knights. i was only too happy to see that sean connery played one of the most famous characters of literature.
15
Braveheart (1995,  R)
Braveheart
mel gibson is a good actor but i think he is better in directing. though, i don't really know the history of william wallace, i really appreciated how this movie depicted his life and his death and the inspiration he imparted to his fellowmen.
16
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl
johnny depp is the perfect actor for the role of jack sparrow. i couldn't think of any one else who could've delivered the same wit, poise and magnetism as depp has done in this role.
i never thought pirate movies would be this fun to watch!
17
The Shawshank Redemption (1994,  R)
The Shawshank Redemption
one of the most heartwrenching movies i've seen. it depicts hope and true friendship. i wanna see it again!!
18
Just Like Heaven (2005,  PG-13)
Just Like Heaven
reese is probably my favorite blonde actress hahah...though it reminds me of the movie ghost, i still like this movie because its light and has a happy ending
19
Clueless (1995,  PG-13)
Clueless
this movie launched alicia to hollywood-dom and even paved the way for its onw tv series (i hoped it was alicia who also starred in the mini-series, though). one of my favrite movies in my teens!
20
Superman Returns (2006,  PG-13)
Superman Returns
this film recently premiered at our local cable network, but even if i saw it twice in theaters, i still watched it.

i was really excited that this new superman movie came along. superman is my favorite comic book hero. though it's not as good as the other superman movies that preceded it, i had a good time reminiscing. plus, i have a big crush on brandon routh so i probably won't get tired of seeing the reruns. i hope i'd see him do other movies soon.
21
The Da Vinci Code (2006,  PG-13)
The Da Vinci Code
i've read the books ages before the movie was done and i was in so much anticipation of it. to my disappointment, tom hanks did a lackluster performance for playing robert langdon. despite of this, i still am a fan of this movie because of the superb performance from ian mckellen and paul bettany.
22
Pretty Woman (1990,  R)
Pretty Woman
a very unexpected love story...very inspiring..
23
Transformers (2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
i could think of a thousand but i guess there wouldn't be enough words to describe how brilliant this movie is! first and foremost, i want to clarify that i am not a fan of the cartoons, even if i had seen a few episodes of it during my childhood, i wouldn't say that i faithfully followed th series from beginning to end. i wasn't really expecting much prior to seeing this film, though the trailers looked interesting and showed enough action and cgi to entice me into watching it, i just entered the movie house thinking that this is just another action movie full of painful scenes to watch. well, actually it is, but as the cliche goes, it's more than meets the eye. the film started out giving the audience more action than they could have expected and from there, each succeeding scene was more and more interesting to watch.
shia le beouf was the gem in this movie, the 'living" gem that is. every scene he is in would either make you laugh or just revel at how cute he is. the other gems, are of course, the robots, themselves. bumblebee, though not the beetle that i was used to seeing in the cartoon version, was my favorite autobot. of course, optimus prime IS the mother or gender-wise the father of all autobots, but bumblebee was really the scene-stealer, imo.
michael bay, well what else can i say, only he is capable of directing an action movie of this proportion.
i have never really enjoyed watching an action-adventure, sci-fi movie since the matrix trilogy and i'm pretty sure that this film is going to be one of this years biggest blockbusters.
24
The Usual Suspects (1995,  R)
The Usual Suspects
this film indeed is one of those rare movies that not only has a great story but a powerful cast as well. kevin spacey's performance was well-worthy of an award, being able to play a character who is the least notorious looking but just as when you think he's innocent, he just gives you that intense look of his and instantly, it would make you do a double-take.
before taking on movies based on comic characters, i would say this one was bryan singer's best film. the combination of the present day interrogation of verbal kint and the re-telling of what took place before this was perfectly smooth. definitely, this film had one of the best twists i've seen in a long time and the catch phrase i've heard "After that my guess is that you will never hear from him again. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. And like that... he is gone."
25
Requiem for a Dream (2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
this is probably the only movie i've seen which boldly tackles substance abuse and i definitely think that aronofsky was able to deliver his message pretty strongly in this film. the cast were terrific but ellen burstyn's performance was probably the most moving. aronofsky's direction was really brilliant and his use of classical music makes the film even more dramatic.
26
Across the Universe (2007,  PG-13)
Across the Universe
Across the Universe is one of the so few movies that I have given a rating of 5. I just simply loved every moment of it. Jim Sturgess grew on me...the opening scene with him singing "Girl" had sent tingles up and down my spine early on until the moment he sang "Something". I'm not a die-hard Beatles fan so I'm not even going to think that they had done these music legends no justice, after all, the movie was was not about the Beatles nor a movie-biography. The combination of visually stunning cinematography and heart-touching soundtrack was just magical. think I have fallen in love with this movie so hard that I might watch it again and again.
27
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006,  PG-13)
The Pursuit of Happyness
A very heartwarming and inspiring story of a father who wouldn't give up on life and on his son.

I am really glad I finally had the chance to see this movie. I have to admit that Will Smith did a great job in this film..maybe the best I've seen him in.
28
Armageddon (1998,  PG-13)
Armageddon
a story of heroism, love and sacrifice. this movie made me cry.
29
Wanted (2008,  R)
Wanted
I thought this movie would be crappy but after I saw it, I was absolutely wrong! I entered the movie theatre without any big expectation...i just said to myself that I'd just go give it a chance since I've seen everything else being shown in the cinema and then surprised as i was, i found myself totally absorbed with the story from beginning to end.

Right from the opening scenes, you'll be in an action-packed ride. What's good about this movie is that it's not hard-core action, there are just enough scenes that will make you laugh not only because it's funny-silly.

James McAvoy was a big surprise to me, from almost being unrecognizable playing the fawn in Narnia, he easily turned into the puny-looking-accountant-
who-later-turned-into-a-one-of-kind assassin.

"What the f*** have you done lately" - If this won't rouse your interest, then I guess you shouldn't be watching Wanted at all.
30
Kung Fu Panda (2008,  PG)
Kung Fu Panda
Kung Fu Panda 8/10

"There's no charge for awesomeness...and attractiveness!"

This film is guaranteed to give you stomachache from start to finish! I never had laughed so hard from watching a movie eversince Will Ferrell's Talladega Nights until I saw this. It's just simply hilarious, the comedic timing was perfect. Jack Black really carried the movie all the way. I enjoyed it so much I want to see it again! LOL.

And again, don't leave the theatres right away cos there's a short "stinger" (post-credit scene, in other words).
31
Little Miss Sunshine (2006,  R)
Little Miss Sunshine
Finally, I had given myself the chance to watch this gem of a movie! I should be bashing my head on a wall for not seeing this on the big screen. I've seen a lot of comedies but I should say that this one struck a chord in me. It didn't exactly bring me to tears - I guess except for the fate of Alan Arkin's character - but the idea of a family, with each member going through his or her own personal struggles, to come together and forget about themselves just to see the dream of a young girl come to life was priceless. The great storyline, coupled with witty dialogue and superb acting make this movie worth seeing more than once.
32
Love Actually (2003,  R)
Love Actually
After watching this for the second time, I must say that I enjoyed it more than the first time I saw it. Everything about this movie is just amazing, from its ensemble cast to the writing and the soundtrack. It's the perfect movie to watch with someone you love.
33
Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
i was never interested in seeing this film, despite the fact that it has been shown in cable a lot of times already. but now that i decided to see it (since there's nothing more interesting to watch), i was completely wrong about my initial perceptions on the film. i was expecting it to be another "im-so-handsome" brad pitt movie, but i was totally impressed with his notorious portrayal of tyler durden. edward norton's performance, as usual, was worthy of an acting award. the direction and writing were equally perfect. i never thought i would actually have this film in my list of psychological thrillers.
34
300 (2007,  R)
300
This movie was definitely worth watching...for the record, i've seen this movie thrice already which attests to the fact that i was really impressed on how it was made.
The storyline was simple yet, the graphics, the dialogue and the effects made the movie extraordinary.
Casting was also very good as I couldn't think of any other actor/actress who could have played any of the characters better.
Despite of the many critics saying that it has no historical backbone, I still don't think that would be enough reaon for anyone to not see this movie as 300 is based on a graphic novel and its purpose is not to make a detailed account of what happened in history.
I surely hope that a sequel would be made.
35
The Green Mile (1999,  R)
The Green Mile
one of my favorite tom hank movies. michael clarke duncan's acting was superb
36
The Breakfast Club (1985,  R)
The Breakfast Club
this film captured the hang ups of every high school student out there. anyone, young or old, will definitely see a piece of him in one of the characters in this ground-breaking movie.
37
Forrest Gump (1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
This film is definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen in my entire life!

Here's the story of an intellectually-challenged individual whose spirit is not deterred by his condition. Forrest Gump's life story, no matter how far-fetched and impossible it may seem, is truly an inspirational and heartwarming one. Seeing him encounter the things he had gone through, from meeting important historical figures to fighting in the war to making it big as a shrimp-boat captain and to losing people he loved is just one roller coaster ride of emotions. And while all those things that happened had changed the people around him, what is truly amazing is that the goodness and innocence and the love (and his haircut, too!) in him never changed.

P.S. This is my 500th review!
