Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
The first science-fiction action-adventure movie where the characters felt like real people in real situations, albeit in a galaxy far, far away. Rather than a fantastic distraction the ground-breaking (at the time) special effects blend in nicely with the action-filled story, as good as any classic second world war movie. It left an indelible mark on my generation.

Casino Royale (2006,  PG-13)
Casino Royale
Wow! Bond is back, and cooler, darker and more serious than anything since the Connery-era. Gone are all the silly SFX, and cheesy jokes - back to basics with a sophisticated spy thriller that reveals the plot without halting the action; even the jokes are wittily placed, plus I loved the free running!
3
Top Gun (1986,  PG)
Top Gun
Best jet-fighter movie ever. Awesome aerial combat scenes set to an exhilarating 80s soundtrack. It even has an engaging plot, with so many memorable lines this is one of few movies where I can probably recite the entire script. Best movie of 80s, if not ever.
4
The Fifth Element (1997,  PG-13)
The Fifth Element
The perfect movie. Great soundtrack, humour, and cinematography together with a kick-ass world-saving good guy, beautiful girl and a touching love story. Set in Earth's future combining spaceships with ancient religions and English extras, could it be any better?
5
Pulp Fiction (1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
Interweaving plots and a consistent, witty dialogue make this gangster flick a true masterpiece that you could never get bored of for a moment. Packed with back-to-back memorable, original scenes and a cleverly chosen 70s mix for the soundtrack.
6
The English Patient (1996,  R)
The English Patient
I really enjoy a good romantic epic and no other story has been quite as grand and touching nor can any other compare with the way this film turns desert vistas into scenes of romantic beauty.
7
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968,  G)
2001: A Space Odyssey
The proverbial good science-fiction movie!
8
Alien (1979,  R)
Alien
The first and best movie of the series is simply pure suspense horror, with awesome HR Geiger visuals.
9
No Man's Land (2001,  R)
No Man's Land
The best movie I've ever seen about the absurdities of war. The story of everyday men finding themselves caught up in a war against their former countrymen is cleverly illustrated as Bosnian reservists get caught between the lines in No Man's Land. A series of tragically comic scenes between the likeable characters ensues as the UN inevitably fails to intervene.
10
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994,  R)
Four Weddings and a Funeral
The film that put British cinema back on the map and kicked off many careers - a classic. I never tire of this movie, it remains hilariously funny every time I see it. Some classic lines and moments, despite the cheesy ending.
11
Blade Runner (1982,  R)
Blade Runner
An atmospheric sci-fi thriller that totally immerses you in the futuristic world it portrays. Dark, but with a hauntingly beautiful Vangelis soundtrack, it's a very unique piece of science fiction that has yet to have been equalled.
12
A Fish Called Wanda (1988,  R)
A Fish Called Wanda
For years this was the only movie that made me continually laugh so hard it would hurt!
13
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006,  R)
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Despite not being a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G character, Borat is hilarious, non-stop... even though it's pretty easy to take the piss out of Americans, Borat manages to do it in a very intelligent, revealling manner! :-)
14
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings is the definitive adventure story, which after all is what fantasy movies should be all about. And Peter Jackson has made the definitive cinematic version of this story, translating the sense of awe and wonder from the novels perfectly.
15
Strange Days (1995,  R)
Strange Days
A very cool science fiction movie set in the "near future". It's got a quirky style, emphasised by the rock/rap/world music soundtrack intermixing with the storyline itself, that appeals to me along with the ever excellent Ralph Fiennes.
16
Total Recall (1990,  R)
Total Recall
It's Arnold Schwarzenegger in a sci-fi action movie set in a future Mars colony just as an ancient alien civilization is being discovered - what more could you possible wish for?? Very colourful, some great sci-fi concepts, perfect pace, and exciting action.
17
Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
What a tough task - to make a movie that is a prequel to a 60s TV show whose characters are some of the most well known and adored in sci-fi. This was either going to be a complete flop or a classic addition to the Star Trek movie series. Thankfully it's the latter. The new cast are not just very believable as younger versions of the original Star Trek crew (even Pegg as Scotty), but they each add new perspectives to their characters. The set, model and costume design are impressively both faithful to the original series and modernised, looking fantastic. The plot may be a fairly unoriginal Star Trek story with yet another "troubled" Romulan causing mischief, but it doesn't matter, because the whole experience (especially on IMAX) is just so perfect.
18
Watership Down (1978,  PG)
Watership Down
Dark and powerful animation that both scared and captivated me as a child. One of the best adventure animations ever, following the travels of a bunch of rabbits seeking out a utopia in the English countryside. A Christmas favourite with the classic Art Garfunkel theme "Bright Eyes".
19
Downfall (Der Untergang) (2004,  R)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
This is a movie that you've just got to see in the cinema. The scenes of the streets of Berlin during the last days of World War 2 seem so real, it immerses you in the movie, and the story of the paranoia of Hitler during the fall of the Third Reich is totally engrossing. Unmissable.
20
Miracle Mile (1989,  R)
Miracle Mile
Dream-like story of a man's attempt to escape from a nuclear missile attack on LA. Plus a Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
