Didn't see a ton of new movies in 2008 and only caught this one recently on DVD. Still, I would call it my favorite movie of the year.

Existential angst gets a huge power-up thanks to Herzog's cranky eye. Fears and sorrows previously limited to mere individuals now apply equally to whole civilizations, species, planets, Gods and universes.

    Killer beauty movie.

Hideaki Anno is the crazy mind behind 'Neon Genesis Evangelion', but this is no anime. Looking forward to watching more of his films. ;)

Hideaki Anno live-action début does a great job transforming what would just be a film about bored schoolgirls trying to figure out what to do with the rest of their lives into something much more interesting. It's rather disturbing to think what some schoolgirls would bear just to earn some extra cash, such as going out with middle-aged perverts and stalkers they meet in the street or through mobile phone dating services. Of course, Hideaki Anno's visual trademarks (filmed in mini-digital camcorders) and recurring themes are all present.

    TCM Alert

Saturday March 1, 11:30 PM EST

Quite a few of youse have this movie as a "Want To See"

A funny and touching coming-of-age story. Kind of like Ingmar Bergman does Pippi Longstocking.

Sorry folks, not showing on TCM Canada but... I do believe it's hockey night anyway.

    Sunrise (1929)

Monday February 4, 10:30 PM EST, Turner Classics

Murnau's silent masterpiece and arguably both one of the most beautiful and significant films ever made. Hey, that's what it says here.

At the top of my "must see" list for 10 years.

17 of my Flixster friends have seen it and collectively give it 4 1/2 stars. Scheduling Mnemonic - Day after Super Bowl. Dial it in.

Oh, I dug this. Preminger delivers solid Beverly Hills noir with a dollop of Freudian melodrama. Mitchum is great as a super cynical "I'm wise to you" pragmatist who still winds up taking the fall for the nutty dame. Nutty dames...
