Silk
by ShaunaSilk suffers from the dull factor and there is nothing I hate more than having to sit through a very dull film.
The beautiful scenery and stunning cinematography is one of very few things I liked about this film. Michael Pitt is a promising actor, I've liked some of his previous work but in this he is incredibly monotonous and emotionless. Keira Knightley could have made more of an impression had the role demanded more of her, and Alfred Molina, a very good actor is a much needed addition to the cast. The scenes journeying between France and Japan, are silent, dreary and too long.
If you actually cared about the characters then maybe this would have been moving, but in my opinion it was a poor attempt at an epic love story. Avoid and watch Atonement instead.Hey, you should really avoid this!

La Haine (Hate)
by ShaunaLa Haine is an edgy, well crafted and unforgettable film from Matthieu Kassovitz.
The film centers on an unlikely group of friends in the suburbs of France and their reactions to the violence that occurs around them.
Matthieu Kassovitz gives us a powerful film, rich in originality which is undoubtedly a triumph in film-making. Cleverly shot in black and white with swift and stunning camera work, which gives La Haine a raw and intense feel. The three main actors give superb performances, particularly Vincent Cassel proving his talent in an early role.
La Haine is a remarkable achievement that intrigues and entertains you right until it's shocking climax.Hey, you should really see this!

Trainspotting
by ShaunaTrainspotting is one of the best British films ever made and my favourite film of all time. It's gritty, edgy, unrelenting and is secure in it's status as a cultural phenomenon.
Based on the incredible novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh. Trainspotting chronicles the lives of a bunch of friends immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene.
Ewan McGregor gives his best performance to date as troubled protaganist Renton and Ewen Bremner equally incredible as his dopey yet loveable best mate Spud. Robert Carlyle gives easily the best performance as quick tempered egomaniac Frank Begbie and in my opinion is one of the best and most entertaining characters although not likeable ever seen in film.
From all the films of his I have seen, Trainspotting remains Danny Boyle's finest hour, it's a daring work of art which was a breath of fresh air to british film-making.
This is film that must be seen. The characters are brilliant and especially the conversations they carry out with each other (a personal favourite of mine is Sick Boy's theory of life). Filled with memorable scenes, great use of black comedy and a perfect soundtrack, Trainspotting is the ultimate experience.Read my improved review of my favourite film of all time!

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
by ShaunaCat on a Hot Tin Roof is an exceptional film with emotionally intense performances from Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor, who's chemistry is electric.
Based on the Tennessee Williams play about a family gathering at the Pollitt household that creates a whirlwind of uncontrollable tensions and confrontations. A main theme of the film is the subject of mendacity which is powerfully illustrated.
This is one exciting film with intelligent dialogue and a dramatic atmosphere. Two reasons to watch this - tremendous acting and a brilliant script. Do not miss out on this.Hey, you should really see this!

Stephen King's It
by ShaunaThis started very promising and intriguing. Tim Curry as the clown was perfect, although he wasn't extremely petrifying, he's creepy enough to put you off clowns for sometime. The first scene where he appears down the drain is spooky and shocking enough to keep you watching. The child actors were all very convincing and in my opinion performed better than the adult actors in the second half of the film. It was more interesting watching their little gang take on Pennywise than the pathetic clichéd older gang.
As the film progresses you get more annoyed at hearing the rants and whimpers of the lead characters who all individually receive a visit from Pennywise.
Overall, it's okay, in no way brilliant. You laugh a lot more than you scream and the ending is extremely disappointing and ridiculous. Watch this, if only for the performance of Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown. This is indeed a shocking thrill ride but prepare yourself for the terrible and disappointing ending.

There Will Be Blood
by ShaunaThere are lots of things that make There Will Be Blood such a powerful and brilliant cinematic experience.
Firstly I must state the obvious Daniel Day-Lewis. He gives an unmissable performance as Daniel Plainview, slowly transforming into the most monstrous of human beings but keeping his humanity all the same. Incredible powerhouse acting that establishes him as one of the best actors walking the planet. Must mention Paul Dano also, why was he not nominated for an Oscar? I expect great things from him in the future.
The script is marvellous, filled with haunting scenes, memorable dialogue. It has a lot of themes, family, faith, greed, power and religion. The score is electrifying and never fails to be haunting.
Paul Thomas Anderson did a fantastic job. His work is new to me and I will now definitely seek out his other films.
The ending is perfect and one of the most powerful I've ever seen.
Films like this come along only once in a while, There Will Be Blood is a force to be reckoned with.

All About Eve
by ShaunaTremendous film-making. All about Eve is an all-round perfect film, terrific performances, magnificent script, brilliant direction and an air of timelessness about it.
This is the first time I have experienced a Bette Davis film and what a phenomenal actress, I couldn't imagine anyone else in the role of Margo Channing. Anne Baxter was also brilliant as the ambitious and scheming Eve, she really played her part well, making her character very detestable. Other supporting roles from George Sanders and Celeste Holm were also spectacular.
The script is very well written and the performances add to it's brilliance. The narration throughout added an engaging and intriguing element to it, it was much needed.
All About Eve is rich in all the elements needed to make a masterpiece. This is a classic not to be missed. This really puts the class in classic!
