The Wrestler (2008, R)
Amazing film. I am happy that Mickey Rourke won the Golden Globe for best actor. I would love to see him win the best actor oscar at the Oscars. I am not sure if that will happen. I have a feeling the Academy might side on Sean Penn for Milk. I thought Rourke's performance in the Wrestler was better than Penn's performance in Milk. Being a wrestling fan and having gone to conventions and local matches, I totally understand the wrestler's type of life, especially ones that are out of the WWE. I feel really bad for all the older wrestlers that go to conventions and no one goes to them for autographs or even to say hello. It was great seeing wrestlers Ernest Miller, Blue Meanie, and WWE current wrestler R-Truth (also know as K-Kwic) in the film. Marisa Tomei and Even Rachel Wood give great supporting performances. I knew the area in NJ where they were shooting the film. I was also happy to see an actress friend of mine, Elizabeth Wood, make an appearance in the film. Elizabeth was in my feature length improv film David's Apartment. In the Wrestler, Elizabeth was in the scene at the bar and she givies Mickey Rourke and the woman with the blond hair that he is flirting with, their |

Defiance (2009, R)
This was a really good film. I am shocked that the film got snubbed from getting nominated for the Academy Awards. The film should have gotten nominated for best picture, while Craig for actor, Schreiber and Bell supporting actor, and Zwick for director. I thought this was Daniel Craig's best performance yet. He was much better here than as James Bond. The film also deals with a question of which brother had the right strategy to lead the people, Craig or Schreiber. There were some similarities to another Zwick film, Legends of the Fall. Some similar elements include the 3 brothers, war, and even the ending was similar. Despite the similarities, they are both great films. I definitely recommend Defiance. |

In Bruges (2008, R)
This film really delivered. The film kind of reminded me of Pulp Fiction with a bit of Carlito's Way in it. Colin Farrell was amazing in the film, even hilarious at times. The on screen chemistry between him and Brendan Gleeson kind of reminded me of the Sam Jackson/John Travolta on screen chemistry from Pul Fiction. Gleeson is also great in the film. Fiennes is great as their villainous boss. The ending kind of reminded me of Carlito's Way. I still don't understand why the Golden Globes put this film under comedy. The film is not a comedy but has a lot of funny moments in the film. Farrell did deserve his Best Actor Golden Globe for the film (although to me, it is not a comedy). The film should have been nominated in a bunch of categories at this year's Oscars. Either way, I do recommend In Bruges. |

Watchmen (2009, R)
I was impressed and blown away by this film. I didn't like 300, but I ended up liking Watchmen. I never read the graphic novel before seeing the film, but I ended up getting sucked into this world on the screen. The film had a style like Matrix or Blade Runner. Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were fantastic in the film. What was weird was that some of the costumes kind of reminded me of other superheros. Such as, the niteowl reminded me of a Batman costume. Haley's costume reminded me a little of The Shadow's costume and a little of the Spirt's costume. Matthew Goode's costume reminded me of Chris O'Donnell's Robin outfit. Malin Akerman's costume reminded me of Carrie Ann Moss's costume in the Matrix, except here in yellow and black. To me, it was predictable who the killer was, and major family relation was also predictable to me. I think Snyder should have lessened the gore in the film. The ending, which I found out is different than the graphic novel, kind of reminded me in a weird way of the ending of the Dark Knight. Overall, the Watchmen was a very entertaining film. |

Another home run for Robert Downey Jr. He shines in the role of Holmes. I like his take on the character. I could have also seen Johnny Depp or the late Heath Ledger doing a similar take to the character. Jude Law is fantastic as Watson. Law and Downey have great on screen chemistry. A new great dynamic duo. Mark Strong is fabulous as the villain Lord Blackwood. |

Redbelt (2008, R)
Really great film. Definitely the best film that David Mamet directed. Chiwetel Ejiofor gives an amazing performance in the film. Emily Mortimer was great too. I thought the casting of Tim Allen was a weird choice, however, he did really good in a role that I could see Bruce Willis playing. Well acted. I definitely recommend this film. |

(500) Days of Summer (2009, PG-13)
This is now, my new number 1 favorite film of the summer and one of my favorites of the year. It is like the film "The Break Up" meets "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". It is very original in terms of the style of this film. Gordon Levitt and Deschanel both shine in this film. Also they have a great supporting cast behing them. Geoffrey Arend reminded me of Curtis Armstrong in Risky Business and Matthew Gray Gubler reminded me of Eric Christian Olsen. Mika Kelly is also great in her one scene. The film has a great soundtrack. I loved the sequence where the song "You Make My Dreams Come True" is played in the film. I also thought the spoofing of the French New Wave films, in this film was hilarious. I thought the animation that was done in the film was great. I definitely recommend this film. |

The Hangover (2009, R)
Hilarious film. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha shine in this film and have great on screen chemistry. This is definitely "Bachelor Party" for a new generation. What I really liked about the film, was the twist concept. That is, usually the films about Bachelor Parties, show the actual party. The twist here, is that they don't show the audience the party. They leave it to the characters to discover what happened at the party. This is definitely a film, that is perfect to see with a group of friends at the movie theater. |

This is one of John Cusack's best performance that he has done so far. He should have gotten an Oscar nomination for the film. I don't know why the studio didn't push for him to get the nomination. The 2 actresses that play his daughters in the film, also shine in the film. I was really surprised that Clint Eastwood did the music score for the film. I definitely recommend the film. This is Cusack at his best. |

Eagle Eye (2008, PG-13)
Good and exciting film. It did feel like Enemy of the State meets WarGames or I Robot. I was surprised by who ended up living and who gets killed. Billy Bob Thornton was ok in a role that would have gone to Tommie Lee Jones. Also I was surprised that Juliane Moore was the voice on the phone. The first 20 minutes felt a bit slow but it picks up right after that. |

Funny People (2009, R)
This is Judd Apatow's best film that he has made so far, in my opinion. Adam Sandler gives one of his best performances on screen. He plays a character that is not a nice guy, but he makes the audience sympathize and care for him. That was kind of like what John Travolta did in Saturday Night Fever and Mickey Rourke just did in The Wrestler, of making a character who is not a nice guy and making the audience sympathize and care for him. Rogen is good in this film. I think this is also one of his best performances so far. Rogen and Sandler have great on screen chemistry. Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman does great supporting work in the film, as does Leslie Mann. The cameos by all the celebs are hilarious, especially the Eminem and Ray Romano confrontation. The ending kind of reminded me of the ending of Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. I definitely recommend Funny People. |

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009, R)
Washington vs Travolta. This film is an exciting thrill ride. Both Washington and Travolta shine in this film. I think this is one of Travolta's best as a villain. I liked the clock/timer that is used in the film, giving it a 24 type feel to the film and added suspense to the film. Turturro, Gandolfini, and Guzman give solid supporting performances. The finale reminded me of the finale in the film Falling Down, starring Michael Douglas and Robert DuVall. I am not sure if the film is better than the original, but it is definitely worth seeing. |

Pixar hits another home run with Up. I definitely recommend that people should see the 3D version than the 2D. The music score is also very good. I have a strong feeling that the film is gonna win the Oscar for best animated film. There were some scenes that reminded me of another Pixar film, The Incredibles, especially the Movie tone news segment and some scenes in the jungle. I really liked the montage in the beginning of the feel between him and his wife. It was really well done and moving. |

He Was A Quiet Man (2007, Unrated)
This film really surprised me. It has been a long time since I have seen Christian Slater in a great film role. Slater does an amazing job in this film. Elisha Cuthbert also does solid work and William H. Macy also provides solid supporting work in the film. I did predict the big twist of the film, early on, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the film. It kind of reminded me of Fight Club and American Psycho. I was surprised to see John Gulager, who was the 3rd season winner of Project Greenlight, in an acting role in this film. I definitely recommend this film. |

Awake (2007, R)
This film took me by surprise. I wasn't sure what to expect from watching the trailer, but the film blew me away. It is scary to think that this could happen, when the anesthetic doesn't work while surgery and you are still awake and can't do anything. I was surprised by the short running time for the film, an hour and eighteen minutes. The acting was really good, especially Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba, Terrence Howard, and Lena Olin. Hayden should stay away from scifi films like Jumper and Star Wars and stick to dramas like this, Shattered Glass, and Factory Girl. The only negative was that the film opens and ends with a voice over from Terrance Howard and that was a mistake, the voice over should have been Hayden's, not Terrance. I definitely recommend this film. |

Body of Lies (2008, R)
I liked it. The acting was really good. DiCaprio was better here than in Blood Diamond. Crowe was only in it for 20 to 30 minutes of the film (like 10 scenes). This was DiCaprio's film. It reminded me of Spy Games (Brad Pitt, Robert Redford film) meets the Departed meets the Recruit (Al Pacino, Colin Farrell film). Mark Strong, I think that is his name, he is also in RocknRolla, stole the film. He looks like a young Armand Assante. |

To me this is my 2nd favorite Potter film so far, Goblet of Fire being my favorite. I never read any of the books, but have friends that did read them and told me about each one. Even though, I knew what to expect in this one, I found it very entertaining. All 3 leads shine in the film. I liked how they handled both romantic triangles in the film. I also thought that Jim Broadbent, Alan Rickman, and Tom Felton did good supporting work in the film. Some moments did remind me of Goblet of Fire. I do understand why and what changes were made from the book to the film. I am looking forward to the next film, which will be split into 2 films. |

The Proposal (2009, PG-13)
The film reminded me of a combo of films such as: Green Card, Overboard, The Devil Wears Prada, Two Weeks Notice, and While You Were Sleeping. The finale of the film reminded me of both While You Were Sleeping and Two Weeks Notice combined. Despite the film being predictable and formulaic, it was very entertaining and enjoyable. Reynolds and Bullock shine in the film and have great on screen chemistry. Betty White steals every scene that she is in. Also, Oscar Nunez steals every scene that he is in, as the character, Ramone. I hope the next romantic comedy that Sandra Bullock does, she won't copy any of her old films, like she did her. Overall, I definitely recommend to check out the Proposal. |

Good film. Great performances by this ensemble cast. The film kind of reminded me of Pulp Fiction. It doesn't have a traditional 3 act structure. It feels like 4 short films in one whole film. The only negative was to me the outcome for each of the 4 parts to me was predictable. Other than that, the film is very entertaining and worth checking out. |

I would give the Best Picture Oscar to this film. One of the best films that I have seen this yeah. Congrads to Clint Eastwood on delivering another great film. The film has a Rocky and Hoosiers feel to it. It will definitely have you cheering in your seat. Morgan Freeman is amazing as Mandela. He definitely deserves a Best Actor nomination. Clint Eastwood should get a Best Director Oscar for the film. Matt Damon was ok in the role. |

Hilarious film. Great script. Steve Coogan is great and funny in the lead role. The narration was funny too. The clips in the beginning showing Coogan's character acting career, were hilarious. It was great seeing Elisabeth Shue on screen again, in a role spoofing herself. All the songs in the play were funny and very catchy. I felt like singing along to the songs in the play. I definitely recommend Hamlet 2. |

From all the behind the scenes negative buzz that I was hearing for the film, I was expecting not to like the film. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The film I thought was better than Transformers 2, but the first Transformers film was much better. This film needed another rewrite of the script to make it a tighter film. The film reminded me of the films, S.W.A.T. and the first X Men film. |
|
| 352 |
X-Men Origins - Wolverine (2009, PG-13)
I had a mixed to negative reaction watching the film. I was expecting much better, especially since the trailers for the film are really good. I understand why the comic book fans are angry and I kind of agree with them. Just like Sam Raimi did some tinkering with the Spiderman storyline to the big screen, the screenwriter did some tinkering with the Wolverine and X Men storyline from the comic to the big screen and that is what is upsetting a lot of the comic book fans. Gambit shouldn't have been in this film. He should have been in the originally trilogy. Cyclopse also shouldn't have been in this film either. The characters of focus should have been Wolverine, Sabertooth, Silverfox, Striker, and Prof. Xavier. But instead they bring in characters that don't need to be there. There is also a cameo appearance by a famous X Men character at the end of the film, which feels out of place for one reason, the special effects to make the actor look younger was terrible. You could tell that it was a bad special effect. It might work in some films, like Benjamin Buttons, but the special effect doesn't work in all films to age an actor younger or older via computer. |

I was really surprised by this film. I wasn't sure from the trailer if I was gonna like this film, but I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the film. Helen Hunt does a great job in her directorial debut. She also does a good job actingwise. Colin Firth is also great as her love interest. They have great on screen chemistry together. Better Midler steals every scene that she is in. The only weak spot with the film was Matthew Broderick. I thought he was miscast as the ex husband. I think he was much better with Helen Hunt in the film, Project X. I definitely recommend this film. |

He plays a salesman who is told by a psychic that something bad is gonna happen to him soon. He has to try to figure out what will happen to him and try to prevent him. J.K. Simmons of Spiderman films is also great as the psychic and Piper Perabo is also good as Pearce's girlfriend. Great screenplay. I definitely recommend this film. |

Overall, I found the film to be very entertaining. Amy Adams does shine in this film, like she did in Enchanted. Hank Azaria, Jonah Hill, and Bill Hader were hilarious in the film. There are some really good one liners in the film. I loved the Darth Vader Oscar the Grouch cameo and the line about Archie Bunker's chair. I also liked that this time around they had Stiller go through paintings in the film. The film in a weird way, had a "Die Hard" type of feel to it. However, I thought the first film was much better storywise. The heart of the first film was Stiller character trying to reconnect with his son. This film lacks that. Instead is focused on Stiller's character dealing with recent success and whether he made the right decision of leaving his job as a night guard. I went in seeing the film, with high expectations, however, I felt a little disappointed, cause the trailer revealed too much. That was a major mistake by the studio. Overall, the film is funny, but not as good as the first film. |

Matt Damon is what makes this film worth seeing. The film reminded me of About Schmidt from the style of the film, to the music, and the voice over narration by the lead characters in each film. On the positive, the performances are very good. I can see Damon getting a Golden Globe nommination or a possible win for Best Actor comedy, depending on his competition. Scott Bakula is great in his supporting role. It was also great seeing Back to the Future's Thomas F. Wilson in the film too. The only negative is that the pacing was off. However, Damon's performance keeps the film intact. I definitely recommend the film. |

This is Kathryn Bigelow's best film that she has directed so far. The film kind of reminded me of Black Hawk Down. She was very smart in not casting stars in the 3 main lead roles. The performances by Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghy are top notch and even Oscar worthy. Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes are very good in the few scenes that they are in. Bigelow makes the audience feel the tension of what it is like to be on the army bomb squad on a mission. This could win some Oscars. I definitely recommend the film. |

In the Valley of Elah (2007, R)
Really good film. Tommy Lee Jones gives a knock out performance as a father in search of his missing son. I totally understand why he was nominated last year for the best actor oscar for this film. He deserved being nominated. Susan Sarandon is also good in the film, playing Jones's wife. Well acted, by this ensemble cast. The film kind of reminded me of Courage Under Fire starring Denzel Washington. The only negative is that I thought Charlize Theron was miscast as the detective trying to help him. I think Ashley Judd would have done better in Charlize's role. Definitely worth seeing, especially cause of Tommy Lee's performance. |

Lions for Lambs (2007, R)
A really great film. This film should have done better at the box office. Also, it should have been nominated for Oscars. Robert Redford does a super job directing this film. I was surprised by the short running time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. I would have loved more, even 30 more minutes to it. The editing of the film is dead on solid and exciting at times. The performances are all top notch including Redford, Cruise, Streep, Pena, and Luke. I definitely recommend this film. |

When the film opens with Once Upon A Time, you got to expect that all that you see in the film is fiction and not based on historical fact. Pulp Fiction will always be my favorite Tarantino film. This one was definitely much better than Death Proof and Kill Bill Volume One. It is a good as Jackie Brown and Kill Bill Volume 2. I like that Tarantino does a 5 chapter structure for this film, like he did in Kill Bill. Christoph Waltz steals the film as the main villain. I can see him getting nominated for the Academy Award for best supporting actor, with a possibility of winning it. |

This film really took me by surprise. It kind of reminded me of Garden State. Matthew Perry, in my opinion, gives one of his best performances so far, in this film. Perry and Lynn Collins have great on screen chemistry. Collins, I thought was much better here than in Wolverine. Great supporting work from Kevin Pollak and Mary Steenburgen. |
