Taxi Driver (1976,  R)
Taxi Driver
scorsese and deniro step up a gear after mean streets and create a genuine classic of 70s cinema, deniro is travis bickle, a newyork cabbie and vietnam veteran, who drives the streets, just doing his job, but is sickend by what he sees going on, the crime rate, and the general state of the city, its here he eyes up betsy, played by cibil sheperd, a campaine worker, for palantine, a candidate campaighning for election, he gets to go on a date with her, but blows it by taking her to a pawn film, this adds to his personal problems, but he also meets iris a 12 year old prostitute working the city, he sees in iris whats wrong with the city and wants to help her out, but her pimp, played by harvey keitlel controls her life, these things that happen to him pushes him further into despair, as travis buys guns and gets into more desperation, its clear to him what hes gotta do, free iris, and assassinate palentine, as he ses he is no better, than any other politician,
deniro is suberb in this film, a really convincing portrayal of a man in possibly depression, this is why the 70s for me is the golden age, and with cities in america being at there most violent, it really helped film, and n.y york is a charactor in this film, you really see society and violence there in front of you, you dont get that in todays films, nothing looks more gritty than newyork films of the 70s, foster and keitel are also superb, and foster who was around 12 at the time is amazing, keurel reuniting with scorsese after mean streets, is good, scorsese shows the potential, that will cement his career, and wit later films like after hours bringing out the dead, goodfellas, and the departed, a great score as well by bernard herrman a great catchy main theme. my no 1 off all time, and along with goodfellas changed my viewing habits, and got me into proper films, please check this out
2
GoodFellas (1990,  R)
GoodFellas
scorsese,s other masterpiece, and my 2nd fav film off all time. ray liotta stars as henry hill, a kid who grows up in queens newyork, who all his young life is dazed by the life style of the local gangsters, as they pass there time between jobs, at the local cab stand, henry is employed to work there, and is emediatly put to work, on small time jobs, here he starts a career as a gangster, and meets tommy, later played superbly by joe pesci, and of course jimy conway, played by de niro, from this point on we get henrys commentery on the life of a gangster, the money to be made, the women on the side, and the threats awaiting which is part of the life, here he meets karen, lorraine bracco, and they get married, as the 60s turn into the 70s life changes for henry as more pressure and jail terms happen, and its when he gets into the drug distribution side of things( a mafia no go area) and paulis(head of the family) dislike of the stuff, that things turn for the worse, and his life with the family is coming to a head.
what can i say, this film changed everything in terms of film watching for me, it got me into scorsese for 1 thing, got me watching films by great directors, coppola, de palma, and a lot of others, and not just knowing who spielberg was, his direction is faultless, the pacing in this film, is probely the best ive seen 2 hours 20, flys by, his music choices are superb, and fit well into the story, the use of layla(piano exit) is superb, acting is top notch, bracco, as the wife, paul srvino as paulie, and de niro all great but pesci is chilling here, a real nasty piece of work, his funny guy speech is not only the most chilling scene ive seen, but funny as well, and liotta, well im apalled he wasent even nominated for a oscar, its top 5 performances of all time for me, his charm in the beginning to drugged up at the end is great, influenced by the greats, scorsese says, and a influence to many, watch paul thomas andersons boogie nights, for pacing and plot, there so alike, and next to taxi driver a modern masterpiece, love this film, and depending what mode im in overtakes taxi driver, please watch this film
3
Dawn of the Dead (1979,  R)
Dawn of the Dead
best horror movie ever made
sequel to night of the living dead, and continuing thec story of the dead rising and taking over the world, here after the little setting of the farm house in living dead, we see things have progressed further, with major cities having been infected, and marshall law now out the window, it realy is the end, and only so long people can continue, a group of 4 decide enough is enough, they have to get out, so with a helicopter, flee it to a safer area, its here they find a abandoned shopping mall, surrounded by many of the undead, but very secure, if they got all the zombies inside, out of there, they do this, and its when they have the mall to them selves, they sort off start a new life, with all the benefits, that a shopping mall has, food, and modern living, they really make it cosy there, all the while hoards of zombies, wait out side, a great horror film, with many great set pieces, involving zombies heads getting shot, run over or just toyed with, great comedy moments, and a great third act whichb ses the mall over run with zombies again, i love this film, its the only horror i can think of, that i wanna be in that situation, dodgeing zombies and all that, very influential, to many horror directors, and everybody else, the mall is a place in wanna visit, its in pennsylania, and a top 5 all time film for me, what a great soundtrack too the catchy tunes youll be whistleing for ever, watch this and ignore the good but unnessery remake, in 2004, watch it as a film not a remake, works better, please watch this film
4
Fargo (1996,  R)
Fargo
best film from the coen brothers, william h macy stars as a car salesman up t his neck in det, who then hires steve bushimi and peter stormore to kidnapp his wife, so he will get the ransom money, but through a murder commited by bushimi, frances mcdormond as a pregnant cop, is brought into the fold, who then makes her way to macy, who car was in the possession of bushimi, like a lot of coen brother films, this has great wit, and dialogue, only the coens can do properly, as a thriller this not convincing, simply because, its one of the most funniest films around, black comedy, top of its game, i hated this when first watched it, but then realised who the coens are, and watched it as a black comedy, genius, everyone is great, macy as the guy in deep over his head, this where i discovered the guy, mcdormond as the cop, v funny, and of course bushimi, hes got this down really fine, a great setting, looks very cold, and an outcome that is typical coen, great dialgue toull be quoting all year, and in my personal top 5, please check this out
5
The King of Comedy (1983,  PG)
The King of Comedy
another scorsese,de niro collaberation, after mean streets, taxi driver, newyork newyork, and raging bull, a little less known than the others, but a fulm thats in my top 5.
de niro plays rupert pumpkin, a wannabee stand up comedian and a obsessed autograph hunter, spending his nights out side the jerry lanford show( just think of the letterman show, and you get what i mean) he sees a oportunity to slip in to the limo of the host, played by jerry lewis, to self promote himself and get a spot on the show, jerry politly agreeing with the man but cant get away fast enough. rupert then goes to the offices of jerry, but is told he needs to do some gigs around newyork so they can see the act, he doesent see the sence in this so finds it a bit rude, he makes a tape of him performing, but when that is rejected, he falls on one last plan, kidnapp jerry for a ransom, a spot on a show. theres a good structure to this, we see scenes with the two, where there friends, and scenes where there not, so a lot of the stuff is in ruperts mind. deniro and lewis are great, lewis not doing his nutty proffessr thing its different but good, deniro is great as well, and his rutine at the end, a great stand up scene, and anm ending which if you get the film, youll be thinking well did he dident he, in my top 5 aoff all time, and very funy like fargo watch it as a comedy, its really amusing, and with todays celebrity reality tv culture, a film ahead of its time
6
Boogie Nights (1997,  R)
Boogie Nights
paul thomas andersons, follow up to indie drama, hard eight, and probely my fav direcror at the moment, followed with magnolia, and got adam sandler acting in punch drunk love, his new one there will be blood, looks amazing
boogie nights sees the life of eddie torrence, played brilliantly by mark warlberg, as a wash up guy, who does favours for money in the back of the restaurant, here hes discovered by jack horner,( burt reynlds) as he notices he has a special and big talent, if you know what i mean. he invites him out to his huse where he is offered a job as a adult movie star, eddie with no real prospects, and is now homeless, jumps at the chance, here we get a glimpse inside the world ofadult movie making, we are introduced to all the people involved, john c riley as a fellow pawn star, reece fairchild, william h macy, as a cinematoghrapher, heather graeme, as pawn star rollergirl( shes always keeps her skates on) julianne more as amber waves, the best in the business, and of course phillip seymour hoffman as scotty, the lonely boom guy
we see eddies life rocket to stardom, and turned into dirk diggler, as he becomes the best at what he does, and along with jack horner, and reece fairchild, think up a concept for a film, with a actual story, hes then turned into brock landers, and agsain is a success, things turn ugly as the 70s turn into the 80s, and things like videotape and cocaine, begin to ruin the party, so we see eddie during this time, sink to a low, of prostituting, and crime to make a quick buck,
the style of this filn is so great, and in a way so many elements of goodfellas are seen here, the structure, the use of music all present, and the third act, which sees the downside, everyone is on fine form, and it was great to see anderson team up with a lot of this cast for the amazine magnolia, and a shout out to reynolds who while playing a 70s charactor, puts him back where he once was king of the box office, since boogie nights he dident capalise on its fame, unlkie say travolta and pulp fiction,
great 70s soundtrack, 70 settings, funny moments( warlberg and riley, in recording studio, is priceless, you got the touch, brilliant), and anderson on his way to genius, this is in my top 10 easy

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
best film of the 60s, and stanley kubricks masterpiece, set during the cold war, a nuclear attack is put into operation, due to a mad militery general, played by sterlin hayden, and, a new device called the doomsday machine in russia, and its up to the goverment to stop one of the aircrafts reaching russia, and dropping nuclear bombs, peter sellers plays 3 roles here, dr strangelove him self, a raf officer, and the president of the u.s,a., and hes on fine form, also great performances from george c scott, and slimm pickings, this film is a very funny black comedy, and a very good anti war film, its about the end of the world, and shot in great black and white, with all the great kubrick trademarks

25
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988,  R)
The Last Temptation of Christ
scorsese does jesus christ, marvellous.
here we see the life of jesus but with a different look, based on nikos kazantzakis book, where he shows what if jesus had a choice and could not be the saviour and lead a normal life, get married and have kids, although this thought only apears towards the end of the film, the whole film deals with jesus going about his business, whilst having thoughts, and god more a burden than a sign, we see all the usual things assosiated with jesus, healing, water into wine, but its a interesting take, especially for me since im not a believer. very controversial at the time and a film you must see, great to see scorsese tackle this subject, as usual, all his trademarks are there his cutting especially and great musc from peter gabriel, dafoe although not a realistic jesus, everyone including harvey keitel as judas speak in bronx acents, which actually isnt to bad, great locations filmed in morocco i believe, and quite gruesome scenes later on at the crucifixam, this is actually in my top 5 scorsese, and just shows he can do anything, best jesus film ever

28
Heathers (1988,  R)
Heathers
black comedy at its finest, wynona ryder stars as veronica, part of a high school pack of girls, all called heather, while enjoying the benefits, of being in this group, she also sees, the badness that follows, and wishes them dead, when jd turns up played by christian slater, he hooks up with veronica, and acidently kills one of the heathers, and they dont stop there, but when one heather dies another takes the reigns, and also killing various pupils who are not very good people. a great look at high school life in america, and social groups that form, and the madness of it al, and great wit, and marvellous performances and situations from all the cast, check out veronicas parents, and, the funeral scene, and a top jack nicholson inpression from slater, and wynona ryder, a great prospect, one of the best films of the 80s,

Well Scott there are many movies I love in your favorites, a few that I considered just OK, and 1 movie in particular I just didn't like at all(Rushmore), but all in all I'd say it's a commendable list
