The Dark Knight
PG-13
Once again director Christopher Nolan did not disappoint the audience with this dark masterpiece. THE DARK KNIGHT completes with BATMAN BEGINS. Although the running time of the film is quite long, the 2-hour and 30-minute will pass faster than expected.
The action is mind blowing. The story is very well-written. It is both very entertaining and smart. From the set to the camerawork, Nolan knows how to compose an atmosphere to a film in order to experience the world of the characters.
As for the acting, it is one of a few films which use an all-star cast for a good reason and not just to put them on screen. They all have their own moments in the film. It should also be mentioned that Christian Bale is Batman all the way. He beats any other portrayals of Batman. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a clearly a better choice as the female interest. Lastly, the astonishing performance by the late Heath Ledger is ,by far, his best performance ive ever seen. He is completely mad, hilarious and scary, all at the same time. He represents madness in every sense of the word and he portrays it so well that we just want to see more of The Joker.
THE DARK KNIGHT is one of the best superhero films, if not, the best ive seen. The story is complete. The action is spectacular. And watching Batman and The Joker going against each other is quite a ride.
Charlie Bartlett
R
Not being a big fan of teen films, CHARLIE BARTLETT is a different type of film because the hero isnt the typical hot and rebel guy. He is just a skinny, rich young fellow who is trying to do fit in the crown like the other teens.
Anton Yelchin will be a name to remember because he has great chrisma and talent on screen. Strangely, as the school principal who tries unsuccessfully to get the attention of the students, Robert Downey Jr. also delivers a good performance. And of course, Hope Davis, as the mother, is great as usual.
The film is a mix of HAROLD AND MAUDE with FERRIS BULLER'S DAY OFF. It is not as cheesy as other teen films. Plus, it has a great message to all teens out there who just wants popularity.
Short Cuts
R
SHORT CUTS is a 'hyperlink' film which exploits different relationships from the multiple couples and their entourage. One of the best aspects of the film is the stellar cast. From Tim Robbins, Frances McDormand, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Lemmon to Peter Gallagher, everyone delivers their own specialty to the film.
Although it might be a 3 hour film, the late Robert Altman knows how to create enjoyable films which makes the time pass by a little fast.
Solaris
PG-13
SOLARIS is a kind of film which you have to stay awake and focus because it is quite a ride. This unknown planet does something that human kind cannot understand and so did I.
Despite its difficult content in terms of the philosophical and psychological aspect, Soderbergh film still has some very interesting elements. The cinematography is very futuristic. The only disappointing aspect of the film is the acting.
If philosophical film isnt a challenge to watch, give this film a try.
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
R
The film starts off quite slowly. The plot of the film drags on a little. But in the end, THE ORPHANAGE isnt the typical horror film because it can make you scare and also cry.
One thing which director Guillermo Del Toro didnt let down is his accomplishment for the visual style. Although it is not as stunning as PAN'S LABYRINTH, this film still lives up to our exceptations of great artistic setting.

Andrei Rublev
Unrated
This film may be 3 hours long but it is filled with very interesting cinematography and, incredible representation of Russians struggling for their survival. Considering that the story takes place in the 15th century, we see how the religion has an major impact on the people. A film to see but only if you're able to appreciate great art and religion blend in one film.
4.
Stalker
Unrated
This sci fi/ psychological film is amazing. It brings us to another 'world' that determines the future. No special effects to separate the two world, but the dialogue and silence will bring the viewers to that place.
5.
A Woman Under the Influence
R
Absolutely adored this film. The performances were incredible. Gena Rowlands was marvelous as the wacko mother. Peter Falk is also amazing as the husband who never gives up on his wife. One of my personal best from Cassevetes.
6.
Good Night, And Good Luck
PG
An important film which arent produce often nowadays. Couldnt imagine a better actor than Strathairn to portray the Murrow part.

Jigokumon (Gate of Hell)
by ByronHaven't seen many Asian films that aren't mainly of bunch of men sword or martial arts fighting. This movie had a little sword play, but was primarily a drama. The women were still delicate and submissive in this society, but I was pleasantly surprised that a couple of the actresses had more dialog and screen time. Though the culture is of a different place and time, there is nothing particularly foreign about the themes, relationships, or emotions portrayed here.

Chinjeolhan geumjassi (Lady Vengeance) (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance)
by Alexander''Listen carefully. Everyone make mistakes. But if you committed a sin, you have to make an atonement for that sin. Atonement, do you know what that means? Big Atonement for big sins. Small Atonement for small sins.''
After thirteen and half years in prison for kidnapping and murdering the boy Park Won-mo, Geum-ja Lee is released and tries to fix her life...
Yeong-ae Lee: Geum-ja Lee
Making comparisons with Park's last two films preceding Lady Vengeance was much more tangible here as with each beautiful piece in a mirroring haze from Oldboy, there was also the exaggerated violence that resided in Mr Vengeance.
The music was again well chosen and played in melancholic, erupting waves without any use of mainstream sources. Some of the compositions were used multiple times and while they might come off a bit repetitive, most of them were either recurring for the sake of certain notions, emotions or themes that the characters were experiencing.
Aside from the tight main casting, many known and capable faces of Korean cinema made interludes throughout the film.
Not much else could be said, apart from them doing just as much as the script allowed. While the visual and musical aspects of Lady Vengeance are vibrant and delicious to the ears, the story here might cause some viewers to contend whether everything makes complete sense.
Playing up good and evil, heaven or hell extremes in Lady by symbolizing Geumja as a devil in angel's clothing or an Angel in dark black clothing, Lady Vengeance then intersperses narrative moments with essential flashbacks to her life in prison. On one hand, she's the saint to newcomers who protects them from the bad prison cell mama-san, while on the other, she's the demonic figure who's plotting murder and to get back at a child killing weirdo who put her there.
She gains respect from these inmates shes locked up with, who play important roles when Geum-ja is released, to exact her 13 years of planning revenge and vengeance.
One of the best scenes in demonstrating this was the making of her twin-trigger handgun, translating poetic justice straight from the hand and arm that gives her the gun, with the many gun tattoos trailing up the arm.
Also her eye make up and her black coat that covers her face in the 2nd half, was wonderfully dramatic and beautiful, showing how focused and determined justice must be served.
Lady Vengeance is quite simply about redemption and revelation, and as we follow the moving drama we may even come to understand something within our own souls.
It is truly a fitting conclusion to this trilogy exploration into hate remorse and revenge. The final Revenge film in Park's Trilogy + the one I wanted to see due to it's interesting case cover.
Lady Vengeance is a visual and musical feat, that shows revenge not just for one woman but a number of people with children too.
Brilliant, but I thought Oldboy was slightly better due to it's action and pace, not to mention twist.posted 11 days ago -

Sweet Smell of Success
by xGaryThis pitch black hearted noir was something of a flop on its release, and it's not difficult to see why. Not through lack of quality, but rather the fact that its unrelenting cynicism and bleak outlook is certainly not for the faint hearted. Tony Curtis turns in easily his best performance as Sidney Falco, an obsequious press agent who is perfectly willing to sell his soul to get on top, and Burt Lancaster is similarly superb, brilliantly cast against type as a cold-hearted tyrant (even describing an attack on his character as an attack on his country, the cry of despots throughout the ages) who controls all around him through contemptible manipulation. The core of the film is the creepily ambiguous relationship between he and his sister; at one point he refers to her "apron strings", an allusion to motherhood, but he also keeps a portrait on his desk as one would a spouse or lover... It is unusual in that instead of fists and bullets, all the damage is done through words and insinuations; the razor sharp dialogue is amongst the best ever written for the screen, and the magnificent photography represents the city streets as blackly as the protagonists' hearts. The package is completed by a soundtrack of fantastic contemporary jazz and the overall result is one of the pinnacles of film noir.
"It's a new wrinkle, to tell the truth... I never thought I'd make a killing on some guy's 'integrity'."

Withnail and I
by xGaryWithnail & I is the tale of a pair of out of work actors in 1969 Camden who decide to get away from it all for a weekend in a country cottage. And that's about it; plot heavy this film is not. It's all about the character of Withnail, played to perfection to a pre-insufferable Richard E. Grant; in fact Grant was a tee-totaler when he made this film, but Bruce Robinson insisted that the leading actors be paralytic during filming, just to make it more authentic! The pair are like a foul-mouthed, drunken version of Laurel & Hardy as they stagger through the ordinary world in much the same way as Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo were in Fear & Loathing, except that this film is very, very British. This film is all about the dialogue, which is hilarious, containing some of the funniest swearing you'll ever hear! It is also, like Gilliam's film, making a comment about the times in which they lived; the end of the sixties. Except in Fear & Loathing, Thompson was bemoaning the loss of power and optimism of the American youth movement, and here Withnail is shown as an endearing but childish and cowardly person, constantly avoiding responsibility and life as a whole, through a cocktail of drink and drugs. He is left behind at the end, like the decade, as "I" gets a haircut and a job, and moves on with his life. Some may think that the "screaming homosexual" uncle Monty is a bit of a caricature and figure of fun, but he is in fact the most sensitive and sympathetic character in the film. it may not translate well to foreign audiences, but it will forever be a firm favourite amongst the British post hippy generation and students alike.

Rails & Ties
by DanielleDevoted railroad engineer Tom Stark (Kevin Bacon, Mystic River) is at a crossroads. His lovely wife Megan (Marcia Gay Harden, Pollack) has survived two bouts with cancer, though now it's terminal. Because of her fragile health, their marriage has been stale for some time, and it's about to be seriously tested with the arrival of a 9-year-old boy.
Davey Danner's (Miles Heizer, ER) mother has just committed suicide. She was killed when the train that Stark was operating smashed into her car. As a result, the precious boy is placed in a foster home, though he is determined to confront the man responsible for not stopping the train. Meanwhile, Megan has decided to leave Tom for awhile, even though she has minimal time remaining. When Davey shows up, Megan takes a liking to him and says she'll stay if Davey stays. The conflicted Tom has no choice, and little does he realize how much of a profound effect Davey will bring to the home. Eastwood's debut as a director is more than impressive. It's clear she's learned much from her father, and visually tells this story clearly and eloquently. Bacon's searing work - coupled with the simple yet thoroughly effective conclusion. It's actually nice to see Marcia Gay Harden not relegated to the role of The Wife or The Mother, and get to sink her teeth into a full-bodied character. And to the extent that the character stands apart from the ludicrous circumstances into which the film throws her, Gay Harden's performance is effective, her excitement at having someone to love almost registering as an actual human emotion. Miles Heizer, who has a hefty part as Davey is also good. "Rails & Ties" is in some ways the serious-drama.Hey, you should really see this! "Rails & Ties" is in some ways the serious-drama.

Grave of the Fireflies
by Alexander''Why must fireflies die so young?''
A tragic film covering a young boy and his little sister's struggle to survive in Japan during World War II.
Tsutomu Tatsumi: Seita
Ayano Shiraishi: Setsuko
Having finally watched Grave of the Fireflies, it's obvious this is one of the most adult analyzed and true to life Historical human pieces in existence disguised as an anime.
The story tells of two children who lost their parents during World War II. Seita and his younger sister survive on very little. Fireflies shows the toll that war brings on the innocent public, the death, destruction and loss are shown in a way that plays on your emotions. The film is sometimes likened to Schindler's List, for its direct, blunt and relentless truth and it is in this regard is worthy of the comparison.
Fireflies made my throat taunt, my heart heavy and water swell in the recesses of my eyes.
During the course of the film, the two siblings grow faint and weak from starvation, and they simply are not able to obtain enough food to keep alive. The saddest moments seen was during the end of the movie, when Seita cremates his 5 year old sister, who ''never woke up again''.
It's hard to watch Fireflies and feel positive at all, the death and loss is too much for a number of people to fathom. However upon reflection, the movie is one of the greatest studies into loss, love and tragedy ever, which will stay with you and compel you to take a second look at anime. For anime is not simply just kiddie cartoons, it is merely another form of presenting a film in a different format/media.
This isn't a fantasy piece like Spirited Away but one of reality which ends up being just as genius and compelling. Isao Takahata has crafted a tale that also has historical accuracy in the sense it displays the sense of hopelessness and desperation in Japan at the time and especially near the end of WW2. A nation that could not support itself where the rich as always stayed rich and the poor got poorer, ending with a divide that bears similarities to the film Empire of the Sun. The reality of Fireflies cannot be stressed enough, the struggle mesmerizing.
Puts a new spin on Anime and lifts it to new dizzying heights. An anime that is so much more, don't be fooled by thinking anime is all kiddish and colourful. This is more true to real life than a considerable amount of History & Dramas about.
The Japan/WW2 suffering of two children is remarkable, the desperation so apparent.
Even if you don't like anime I implore you too see Fireflies as it is so much more.posted 40 days ago -

Caramel
by DanCaramel reminded me of Almodóvar in the sense that it is a movie devoted to women and contained similar themes and humour to some of his movies.
It centres around five Lebanese women; Three who work in a beauty salon where most of the movie takes place, one a regular client and one a tailor who works across the street. They are all good friends and each has a problem in their life...
The title 'Caramel' is taken from a form of waxing that is used in the salon, which looks quite painful!
This is a wonderfully touching movie with bursts of hilarity and sadness.Check out this bittersweet Lebanese movie

Brick
by Alexander''His descriptions of things are really good. He makes you wanna be there.''
A teenage loner pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Brendan Frye
Nora Zehetner: Laura
Lukas Haas: The Pin
Noah Fleiss: Tugger
Brick establishes itself through it's main loner protagonist Brendan and his love and affection for a girl Emily. The Catalyst, her ending up dead which spirals into a detective mission for Brendan to solve the mystery and to find the culprit.
The Debut feature of writer/Director Rian Johnson is his vision, his baby realised and executing an entirely new and bold approach to Aerican High School Life. The whole spin on the genre is apparent as soon as us the viewers become aware and are made to be aware of these key-factors that reside in Brick. These Key areas being head-spinning dialogue and crisp detective film noir style seeping through.
The music adds to the effect and Illusion and sucks us into the world of Brick. Conveyed through every visual shot, every frame and every minute magnificent angle accompanied by luscious crystal clear piano notes, ringing and brass instrumentals.
Performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emille De Ravin and Lukas Hass are at an all time high in being believable, intelligent and utterly convincing. The young disposition of the actors also show that brick is a good start for these rising stars and that more is definitely to follow.
Drawing parallels and styles from old classics such as The Maltese Falcon & ChinaTown what Brick ends up being a twist laden rollercoaster coated with a rubix cube puzzle of ideas and dialogue.
As Brick progresses the ball really picks up momentum and the build up ends up being phenomenal.
Brick is a masterful detective movie that ends up being a blaze of emotion and turbulence that traps you in it's walls and doesn't let go until it's spat you back out...
Even then Brick will linger long after the credits have rolled and faded away.''You're the only thing I love!'' A twisty thriller that requires attention and ultimately has more twists and mystery than most films of the genre.
Brick is a unique take on the American High School underworld scene and an intelligent piece.
