300 (2007,  R)
300 5.0 Stars
Brilliant...!
300 is an excellent film adaptation of the graphic novel 300 by Frank Miller, and is a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae...
Spartan King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fight to the last man against Persian King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his army of over one million soldiers, while in Sparta, Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) attempts to rally support for her husband. The story is framed by a voice-over narrative by the Spartan soldier Dilios (David Wenham). Through this narrative technique, various fantastical creatures are introduced, placing 300 within the genre of historical fantasy ... with Frank Miller attached as an executive producer and consultant, it couldn't miss...

The Crying Game (1992,  R)
The Crying Game 5.0 Stars
A popular and critically acclaimed Irish film written and directed by Neil Jordan. The film explores themes of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality against the backdrop of the Irish Troubles.
The film was notable for its dramatic plot twist, when the male protagonist discovers that his love interest is a transwoman. The film is also notable for its sympathetic portrayal of characters from often-reviled subcultures, presented here as complex and likable human beings...a thriller, but also as an unconventional romance and a must see...!

Red Dragon (2002,  R)
Red Dragon 4.0 Stars
A great story, althought there are (as with many other novel based films) differences between the book and the film, this was a great production as it surrounds such complex and opposite characters, it's not just some mindless drivel centred on a guy eating people, but tells a real story about it's character's lives...
While the brilliant psychiatrist and menacing serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter plays a central role, Red Dragon focuses more on the characters of Will Graham and the tortured serial killer, Francis Dolarhyde.

Fallen 4.0 Stars
A fantastic thriller, from start to end...It protrays although not its major theme a sort of rise and fall factor...we see Police detective John Hobbes gain notoriety for capturing wily serial killer Edgar Reese...
Immediately after Reese is executed, Hobbes is plunged into the case of a killer who seems to be copycatting Reese. Hobbes's investigation soon leads him to discover that this is no copycat, however; Reese -- or at least the evil that was inside him -- has managed to survive the execution, and is jumping from one body to another to continue killing, and to terrorize Hobbes himself. A battle of wits ensues between good and evil and becomes increasingly personal for Hobbes, he must turn to a theologian's theories on demonology as his only hope for defeating the demon that was inside Reese...

A real heartbreaker...and a must see!
Navy SEAL Lieutenant A.K. Waters and his team of SEALs are forced to choose between their duty and their humanity, between following orders by ignoring the conflict that surrounds them, or finding the courage to follow their consciences and protect a group of innocent refugees...the film although depicting a rescue mission in midst of a fictional contemporary Nigerian civil war, was crucified by critics lambasting the fact that the film focused on a fictional atrocity, in an actual country, when there was ample opportunity to explore similar atrocities, which were historically accurate. Others however pointed out that these critics had forgotten about the events of the Nigerian Civil War that were in fact a near mirror...

I believe the critics considered it..."one of the greatest Bruised Forearm Movies ever made..."...what more is there to be said lol...although on a personal note it's thought that Temple of Doom was focused on effects to a higher degree than either Raiders of the Lost Ark or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade...

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 5.0 Stars
This installment in the Indiana Jones series has more humor than the previous two films...
The humor is mainly shown through the relationship between Indiana and his father...even Marcus Brody becomes a much less serious character than his previous appearance in Raiders of the Lost Ark, being described as a museum curator who "once got lost in his own museum." The lightheartedness of the movie especially contrasts to its predecessor Temple of Doom, which is usually cited as the "darkest" in the trilogy...

The Magnificent Seven (1960,  Unrated)
The Magnificent Seven 4.0 Stars
A Mexican village is periodically raided by a gang of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach). As he and his men ride away from their latest visit, Calvera promises to return.
Desperate, the village leaders travel to a border town to buy guns to defend themselves. They approach a veteran gunslinger, Chris (Yul Brynner), for help. He tells them that guns alone will not do them any good; they are simple farmers, not fighters. They then ask him to lead them, but Chris rejects them, telling them that a single man is not enough. They keep at him though, and he eventually gives in. He recruits men, though the pay is only a pittance. First to answer the call is the hotheaded, inexperienced Chico (Horst Buchholz), but he is rejected. Harry Luck (Brad Dexter), an old friend of Chris, joins because he believes Chris is actually looking for treasure. Vin (Steve McQueen) signs on after going broke from gambling. Other recruits include Bernardo O'Reilly (Charles Bronson), Britt (James Coburn), fast and deadly with his switchblade, and Lee (Robert Vaughn), who is on the run and needs someplace to lay low until things cool down. Chico trails the group as they ride south, and is eventually allowed to join them.
Upon reaching the village, they begin training the residents. As they work together, the gunmen and villagers begin to bond. Chico finds a woman he is attracted to, Petra (Rosenda Monteros).
Calvera returns and is disappointed to find that the villagers have hired gunmen. After a brief exchange, the bandits are chased away. Later, Chico spies on the outlaws and returns with the grim news that Calvera and his men are planning to return--the outlaws are broke and starving, and need the crops from the village just to survive.
The seven debate whether they should leave, but decide to remain. They make a surprise raid on the bandit camp, but find it empty. Returning, they are ambushed by Calvera's men, who have taken over the village. Their lives are spared, as Calvera fears others coming for revenge if the Americans are killed; they are disarmed and escorted out of the village.
All of Chris' group except Harry decide to finish the job the next morning. During the ensuing battle, Harry returns to rescue Chris, and is mortally wounded. Bernardo is killed protecting some children he had befriended; Lee and Britt are also slain. Seeing the gunmen's bravery, the villagers grab whatever they can use as weapons and join the battle. The bandits are routed. Calvera himself is shot by Chris; puzzled, he asks why a man like Chris came back, but dies without receiving an answer.
As the three survivors leave, Chico decides to stay with Petra. Chris and Vin ride away, pausing briefly at the graves of their fallen comrades. Chris observes, "Only the farmers won. We lost. We always lose."

Edward Scissorhands (1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands 4.0 Stars
A touching story and a lesson in learning to accept all things uniquely different...The plot focuses on Avon lady Peg Boggs, who encounters a shy and quirky looking man named Edward in a decaying, isolated and highly ornate mansion located on a large hill, overlooking a brightly coloured American suburbia. The man, who has hands made of scissors :? is adopted by Peg into her own view on the 'typical American' family. There he falls in love with Peg's teenage daughter Kim Boggs, however their innocent relationship could potentially threaten Kim's romance with her actual boyfriend Jim, however Edward's presence eventually brings love to everyone in his newly adopted neighbourhood.
The film is a dramedy set in an exaggeratedly stereotypical vision of American suburban life that intentionally combines clichés from both the early 1960s and the late 1980s. It also has a central theme of the isolated, misunderstood major character, a theme that recurs in much of Burton's work...
today it has become a cult fable for children and adults alike...2 thumbs up...

The Last Samurai (2003) 4.0 Stars
A fantastic film about two warriors whose cultures make them aliens, but whose values make them comrades. The battle scenes are stirring, but they are less about who wins than about what can be proven by dying. Beautifully designed, intelligently written, acted with conviction, it's an uncommonly thoughtful epic. Its power is compromised only by an ending that sheepishly backs away from what the film is really about.

High Spirits (1988,  PG-13)
High Spirits 4.0 Stars
A good laugh...
Set in a remote Irish castle, High Spirits is a topsy-turvy comedy with thematic leanings towards Ireland's rich folklore regarding ghosts and spirits...
Peter O'Toole is Peter Plunkett, the owner of a dilapidated Irish castle which acts as a bed and breakfast supplying the only employment for the local villagers. Owing money to an American businessman, Plunkett has the idea to turn the castle into "The most haunted castle in Europe" for the tourist trade. He and his wacky staff of Irish characters set about creating ghost costumes and effects for their first group of American lodgers.
At first annoyed by the inept hauntings, the American guests (including Steve Guttenberg, Beverly D'Angelo, Connie Booth and Jennifer Tilly) soon get what they paid for as the genuine ghosts of Castle Plunkett take umbrage with being cheaply exploited and stage a full scale paranormal event.
Two of the castle's ghosts, Mary Plunkett and Martin Brogan (played by Daryl Hannah and Liam Neeson) become romantically entangled with Guttenberg and D'Angelo's characters. This romantic twist is the focus of most of the plot.

Flawless 4.0 Stars
The film features De Niro as Walter Koontz, a homophobic New York police officer who suffers a stroke that leaves him partially paralyzed and with a severe speech impairment. His doctor recommends singing lessons to help him improve the clarity of his speech. Too ashamed by his impairment to seek out a professional voice coach, he turns for help to his neighbor (played by Phillip S. Hoffman), a flamboyant pre-operative transsexual who is also a drag performer. In the course of their interactions, they discover that although they are each deeply prejudiced against one another, they also have a great deal in common...
Philip Seymour Hoffman was fantastic...2 thumbs way up!
