Once Upon a Time...When We Were Colored

Come see this movie with me...Hey, you should really see this! This is a masterpiece of black cinema. Not to mention the supreme music of Motown that was astounding during the height of the 1960's.

Come see this movie with me...Hey, you should really see this! One of the first major films to deal with the subject of interracial romance and also the subject of someone with a disability at the outcome of the civil rights movement of the 1960's.
Very rare and sometimes controversial for its release in 1965,this was a huge hit at the boxoffice and with it some harrowing and riveting performances especially from Sidney Poitier and Shelley Winters(who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress). The real star of this film comes from the screen debut of a unknown actress named Elizabeth Hartman, who became an overnight success because of this movie...her performance is stunning to behold. Also catch supporting performances from actor Wallace Ford, and also from the great Ivan Dixon. The real experience comes from the moving theme score from legendary Hollywood composer Jerry Goldsmith(who was Oscar nomination for original musical score).posted 1 day ago -

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
by Ross"It's very impressive that a director can start making movies in the late 1950s - with the classic 12 Angry Man, as his very first I might add, - and 50 years on can make something as high in quality as Before The Devil Knows You?re Dead. It's a true testament for sticking to something you're good at for as long as you can and Lumet's dedication and experience serves him extremely well."
Full Review HereI definitely recommend you see this movie but I am just using this feature to say something else to you...

The Longest Day
by MisterBoth timely and timeless at the height of its release in 1962. It was the sort of achievement that was to be marveled.
Darryl F. Zanuck's production of "The Longest Day" was the most authentic depiction of the Invasion of Normandy during World War II ever seen in the history of cinema. Brilliant production values and fantastic action sequences and with an international cast of stars, this was absolutely astounding piece of grand entertainment.Hey, you should really see this! Better yet, experience this movie in 70mm!!!
Seeing this on a huge ultrawide screen is worth it!!! An international cast of stars that features Henry Fonda,Richard Widmark,
John Wayne,Robert Mitchum, and Richard Burton. The running time for this movie is clocked at 179 minutes, plus intermission.posted 5 days ago -

The Dark Knight
by MisterThe thrill ride of the summer. This is to let you know that the Joker is more than wild which brings the testament of Heath Ledger's performance in the second prequel to Batman. Only this time around,Ledger does this with more style and pure evil than Jack Nicholson or even Cesar Romero ever did. "The Dark Knight" brings to light the rattled and transfixation of the character's diabolical menace, blocking out thoughts of the actor's untimely death. It's a career making portrayal and a sadly a career-making one as well. To go from the tacitrum ranch hand in "Brokeback Mountain" to the embodiment of comic-book evil is a stunning trajectory. With his cracked white-pancake makeup, smeared lipstick and greasy hair, the Joker bears no resemblance to the actor that plays him but in fact, the character is like nothing we've seen or heard before. There is however a hint of Malcolm McDowell in "A Clockwork Orange",but Ledger has made this maniac his own singularly unhinged villain. From the repellent way he darts his tongue around to his sneering, nasal voice,he is a peerless eccentric.
Though this is clearly Ledger's movie, that does not diminish the accomplishments of other key cast members. Just as he was in "Batman Begins",Christian Bale is a suave Bruce Wayne and a heroic caped crusader defending Gotham City from the forces of evil.
Gary Oldman is excellent in the returning role as police Lt. Gordon.while Maggie Gyllenhaul replaces Katie Holmes, adding more depth to her character than Holmes ever did in the last installment. Even Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman lend terrific support while Aaron Eckhart is brilliant as disrict attorney Harvey Dent(the man who will transform later on in the prequel series as Batman arch nemesis Two Face).
Again, director and screenwriter Christoper Nolan has crafted "The Dark Knight" into a thrilling, morally, complex and masterfully entertaining piece of a summer blockbuster and it works or all levels. Though it clocks in at 154 minutes, the film is tautly edited with an economy of great storytelling(which goes heavily by the origins of the DC Comics Book and the comic graphic novels). The action scenes are worth the price of admission and they include amazing feats of technical virtuousity. Nolan has done it again and this time brings this second installment as one of the darkest ever in the series. It has the requisite jolts and twists. But it surprises in profound ways and gives us a
maliciously witty villain who gives a performance that is out of the ordinary.Hey, you should really see this! Better yet,see this in an IMAX Theatre!!! It will blow you to the back of the theater!!!!
Also,in selected theatres,"The Dark Knight" is presented in 70mm-6 Track Dobly Stereo/Digital,and you haven't experience it went you see this on a huge widescreen. I have, last night!!!!posted 5 days ago -

Penitentiary
by MisterAs a second wave of blaxploitation flicks that emerge out of the 1970's,the movie Penitentiary is still bedeviled by the uncomfortable contradictions of its macho forebearers, which made it a huge boxoffice hit when it was released in 1979. It's basically the servicable yarn of a young stranger on a bum rap, sentenced to an institutional hell-hole,and eventually bucking the terror regime with two righteous fists. And daubed onto the screen with the vitality of all around excess, teetering craziliy between heavy amounts of gore, rough language and all outright farce. But its assumptions for the better of its sake, either worked beyond the comprehendsion of some of its scenes which were very honest and sometimes brutal. This was a grand film that looked into the life of a penal institional system as seen through the eyes of his character, played by Leon Issac Kennedy.
Another example of black cimema that was still standing at the end of the decade with some of the most replusive stereotyping ever imagine while the audience cheers on the victor who must fight in a system to stay alive at all costs. Done on a low budget,it was consciousness. A sequel followed in 1982 with Leon Issac Kennedy reprising the role.Hey, you should really see this!

Baby Mama
by DAt first I was not interested in seeing this film, the sight of Poehler peeing in a sink is not my idea of good comedy. However the film has some good laughs, and some of the better comedy I've seen from Tina Fey. I like her but her comedy seems to be a mix of good and bad, sometimes she's funny, sometimes she's not. In this film it's more than not, also, women will enjoy the film and its comedy much more than men.
Now, I won't admit I was wrong thinking it was bad, however, it was not as bad as I assumed it would have been. It was JUST passable as a movie that I would see, on a whim, with some friends at the theater. I wouldn't plan to see it, I wouldn't go out late on a Friday/Saturday just to see it. But on a slow Monday/Thursday afternoon when you're just hanging downtown, it is a good movie to see. No real thinking, some quaint comedy and a story that doesn't get too bad too fast. However, the last 15 minutes were both rushed, predictable and was not synergistic with the rest of the movie. However, this is becoming a common occurance in movies lately.
Not great, not bad, just right for an afternoon time killer.A perfect mid-day movie on a slow and casual weekday. (Rent, don't buy)

Rambo (Rambo IV)
by MisterThe Sylvester Stallone comeback to greatness which began with Rocky Balboa(the dreadful Rocky VI)two years ago continues with one of the most patriotic and heroic character ever created-John Rambo. John Rambo was part Vietnam veteran(who fought for his country in the Vietnam War)and a fighter for truth, justice and the American way. Here Stallone, makes a trimuph comeback with Rambo IV or Rambo IV:Back To Hell. Although John Rambo still has the vigor and the same deadly look, the idea of a 62-year-old Stallone putting his Bandana on again and bringing the weapons brings sort of a comic touch to the film. Is this new version of Rambo a comedy or sorts? Hell no and far from it! If you thought Rambo's fight against racist liberals, ignorant rednecks in law enforcement from "First Blood",to fighting and taking out sadistic Vietcong and pathetic Russians in "First Blood:Part II",and violently ripping those against freedom "First Blood:Part III",then you're in for quite a suprise. You haven't seen him transpierce the flesh of the military dictatorship in Burma by killing off any and ever other Burmese lowlife. As such, this is probably by far the best Rambo action movie that has come along in years and righteously so. Stallone takes us back to the grandure of action movies of the 1980's and for good reason. But we also want to see Rambo as a savior but instead he is transformed into a human killing machine with the largest body count ever committed to film. Stallone pushes Rambo to the extreme of violence, but he plays the role better than ever. His face is misshaped, his dialogue is quasi-inexistent,but he delivers the mercenaries outta the hands of a sadistic Burmese general. This was good with the one exception of actor Richard Crenna and the patriotic musical score of composer Jerry Goldsmith, both of whom are no longer with us,but does this movie rocked!

The Happening
by D*groan*
A lot of people have shown their distaste for this movie, some people actually liked it. I am here to tell you what was good, what was bad, and exactly why this ship sunk instead of floated.
The first 20 minutes are actually really really good, the first 5 especially. Call me crazy but I think as an actor, Wahlberg falls into a niche, one of action, comedy and adventure (almost like a B-movie performance actor, but with potential) and I'm really waiting for a movie that truly capitalizes on his ability to be serious and funny at the same time. This movie almost allowed him to do that, and I will keep my eyes open in the future. Lequizamo is a support role, but you can't really go wrong with him. The plot starts off really good, and leaves you thinking however, I must get to the bad parts.
About the middle of the movie the plot becomes pedantic. It does not stay strong in the minds to keep you "on your toes" and near the end of the film, almost all the things that started off great went from a downpour into a light mist. It totally lost its edge, its comedy and everything else.
The last 20 minutes especially make no sense, it's as if Shyamalan wrote it in 5 minutes before they started filming. Thus the ending kills anything good about the movie. I thought the plot was great, that Wahlberg was an excellent choice and some of the scenes are just excellently done. However, the plot disappears and convolutes near the middle and by the end you really don't care or understand what's going on anymore.
Thus it started with a bang and ended in a whimper.People have been requesting me to do more reviews, and some specifically asking me what I thought about this film in particular.
The trailer for this film made my jaw drop. It then got consistently bad reviews. Against this I saw it. I will agree, it had some great scenes and started with a very strong plot, but it drizzled and that's a shame. The worst offense a movie can make is to have so much potential just to fall short in the middle.posted 32 days ago -
Come see this movie with me...Hey, you should really see this! The Ulitimate roadhouse flick which became one of the top ten boxoffice hits of 1958 which was also a huge favorite with the drive-in theatre circuit. Produced and written by Robert Mitchum and directed by Gene Barry(yes, that Gene Barry of Bat Masterson and Burke's Law).
This was one rockem sockem action flick starring Robert Mitchum as a moonshine/gun runner on the lam from the law and the mob in the rural South. Plenty of car chases galore in this classic from the late 1950's.posted 37 days ago -

by MisterGene Hackman as Popeye Doyle. What more can I say? No wonder its one of AFI's top 100 movies of all time and the result was five Oscars including Best Picture of 1971. This was the apex of Hollywood cimema that emerge from the 1970's.
The coolest car chase in screen history through the mean streets of Brooklyn is cimematic treat.Hey, you should really see this! And not to mention its breathtaking sequel "The French Connection II" that hit theatres in the summer of 1975.

The Incredible Hulk
by DI just thought I would give my ideas and reasoning for continuing to not be interested in this film. It's coming out soon and Flixster is plastering the site with advertisements all for the all-mighty dollar.
I'll be honest, when I heard Edward Norton was in it, I was definitely interested. Of course the first one sucked (not that I even saw it) and naturally assumed this would too. I watched the previews, and every time I see Edward on screen, I think to myself that I HAVE to see it. However, the previews pretty much give away the whole story, secondly the CGI is still lame and finally I saw that Liv Tyler was in the movie, which was pretty much the nail that killed the dead horse on this one.
Nothing good has ever come from the no talent ass clown Liv. All be it, she is the daughter of a famous singer, however, unfortunately putting "My daddy makes music" shouldn't be a qualification that allows someone to just start acting in films. Since she continues to blow, I still don't understand how she finds work.
I unfortunately came to the conclusion that I did not want to see a totally crappy movie just to see Edward do great work on Bruce Banner to have the horrible CGI and ultimate sucking of Liv Tyler ruin the whole experience for me.
I may rent, I may get conned into seeing it when friends want to put it in, and I WILL enjoy the Norton, however, I will NOT give the money grubbing jerks my money. I suggest that you take this into account when you choose what movie to put your greenback on.
Enjoy!Yet another un-recommendation. Not saying don't see it, but giving you ample heads up of what will be lame, and why I will not see the film voluntarily.

You Don't Mess with the Zohan
by DThis movie exceeded my expectations. For me it did what Mike Meyers did for British comedy with Austin Powers, and what Jack Black did with Mexican culture in Nacho Libre. However, I warn all those who see it that if you are not versed in Judaism, Israel or any combination of the two, than you may be at a disadvantage for many of the joke references. I am neither, but living in a big city like Toronto and being surrounded by a few people of the faith I get most of the references. If you do, you'll enjoy this movie a lot more, however, devoid of most of the jokes or references, the movie will become dangerously un-funny, and could be a flop to watch. My only other complaint is the over-the-top fixation on sex, penis and other random additions of old-lady fucking. Although I looked passed it easily, I can see a lot of people just wanting to walk out, it can be a little too much.
Hilarious and innovative, past my expectations, but a warning for those who won't be able to take in the full aspect of the humor base.A recommendation, with a warning!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
by MisterIt just goes to show that when it comes to Hollywood heavies, not one of them is strudy and weathered like Harrison Ford who proves to be as worthy as any 65-year old could be,and the other elements of this Spielburg-Lucas blockbuster franchise remains recognizably intact....even after some 20 years. This is however the first "Indy" film in 19 years and it shows in the thrill ride of the summer. Set in 1957,the year of the Cold War and Communism, the fourth installment to the "Indiana Jones" series with producer George Lucas and director Steven Spielburg at the helm along with producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall with a dynamic screenplay by David Koepp(the writer for Jurassic Park)and musical arranger John Williams, this sequel emcompasses all the elements needed and to bring Harrison Ford back as the two fisted swashbuckling archeologist is a welcome change.
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" bring Dr. Jones to the late 1950's where our hero(who has aged) encompasses atomic blasts, sadistic commies, federal agents, blacklisting(from Marshall College),not to mention the Roswell incident, the South American jungles of Peru and Brazil, the usual f/x blizzard and the element of surprise not to mention dealing with a deadly and dangerous foe...this time around dealing with evil Russians(Cate Blanchett)in the quest for the crystal skull. Also to point out this film pays a great tribute to the science fiction/horror/adventure films of the 1950's with references to several Spielburg films(does "E.T." and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" come to mind and his previous remake of "The War of the Worlds"). The cast includes the return of Karen Allen(from the first "Raiders of the Lost Ark" film a welcome sight)along with Shia LaBeouf, John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Jim Broadbent along with the usual cliffhanging suspense and non-stop action and thrills that make this the movie to see this summer. Spielburg and Lucas have done it again, and then some.Hey, you should really see this!
