Dark examination of chance and fate covers familiar ground, but Woody Allen responds to it with a fresh unexpected twist. Good performances all round. Very good movie.

A Good Year (2006,  PG-13)
A Good Year 3.5 Stars
A story of man who revisits his past, only to find the lessons he learnt haven't been forgotten, just buried. The movie has its moments, with its lush, beautiful scenery. Sweet, touching and lovely.

Gone Baby Gone (2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone 4.0 Stars
Ben Affleck's intense directorial debut is a study of human nature and the real struggle with conscience. Gutsy performances by Amy Ryan and Casey Affleck add layers to the raw authenticity of the screenplay. A riveting movie.

The Machinist 4.0 Stars
Eerie, weirdly compelling psychological thriller that shows the workings of the subconscious and is full of literary nuances. Beautifully designed and shot. Bale's mere presence is disturbing.

The Painted Veil (2006,  PG-13)
The Painted Veil 4.0 Stars
I feel that the movie is a depiction of an actual relationship, a depiction of the way that people fall in love with their illusions about somebody as much as with the real person. Then the pain and the difficulty and the disenchantment that comes when those things fall away. The notion of a couple getting through the difficult act of forgiveness and an unexpected chance at redemption make the movie more meaningful than it normally would. A love story told backwards.

The Prestige 5.0 Stars
My favourite movie to date hands down. Watched it countless times. Bale's best performance thus far. Wonderfully cast, except Scarlett, who looks out of place with her Malibu Barbie looks. Great movie by Chris Nolan. Can we expect anything less? A masterpiece.

A movie about how Bond became Bond. Daniel Craig is the best James Bond in my opinion. Loved Eva Green as Vesper Lynd. Not your typical beautiful bimbo Bond girl.
