| Tropic Thunder - R |
Who knew Ben Stiller could direct? Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, the highest-paid, highest-grossing action film star ever due to his Scorcher franchise. He now has a current reputation of appearing in nothing but box office bombs, and after a failed attempt at portraying a serious role in Simple Jack (which he made the mistake of going ?full retard?), he joins the cast of Tropic Thunder in an attempt to save his career, taking on the role of Four Leaf Tayback. Jeff Portnoy (Black) is a ?jellybean?-addicted (read = heroin-addicted) actor who specializes in fart humour. Downey, Jr. plays Australian Kirk Lazarus, ?a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude.? He seems convinced that he?s actually black, ?till he ?done the DVD commentary,? of course. This exasperates his fellow actor Alpa Chino [Jackson] (say it out loud), a rapper who was born black, and is only concerned about promoting his own merchandise, an energy drink called ?Booty Sweat?, which is actually sold on Amazon.com. The only actor that I like among the 5-men ensemble is Baruchel as Kevin Sandusky, the only cast member to have read the script and book and attended the assigned boot camp before the film. Tropic Thunder is ultimately a mega-budget war movie that makes fun of mega-budget war movies. I liked it when it was called A Cock and Bull Story. But to be fair, this one is slightly different, and obviously has a much bigger budget, and is more Hollywood. It?s not weird in a good way like Cock and Bull was, but when it?s funny, it?s really funny. It?s uneven though. The beginning wasn?t great, there are some wildly funny scenes, a few not so funny ones, and some were just plain OTT. In the end, the movie-within-a-movie turned out well for everyone involved, because Tropic Blunder: The True Story Behind the Making of the Most Expensive Fake True War Story Ever won 8 Oscars, earned $400 million at the box office, and saved Speedman?s career. Saving the best for last, Tropic Thunder is enhanced by several cameo roles, the best of which is *drumroll* Tom Cruise. I kid you not, he?s in this, and unrecognizable. The only giveaway is his voice, which I can recognize anywhere. If you can?t, you?ll probably have to wait for the credits to roll to know it was him. He?s so funny in this, I think he?s become cool again. |

| Forrest Gump - PG-13 |
Forrest Gump is a story about overcoming any obstacles (even retardation!) if you try hard enough. Makes for a great uplifting story, doesn?t it? Except that, I think, real people have found themselves unable to replicate even one-tenth of Forrest?s success ? and these are people who are not even mildly retarded. In fact, the more you think about it, the more you see how impossible this story is and that the movie is just plain STU-PID. And what?s with the whole ?life is a box of chocolates, you never know what you?re gonna get? crap? I mean, if you buy the goddamn thing, you know what you?re gonna get. But that?s nothing compared to the final half hour. Jenny came and visited Forrest and stayed with him. She was tired all the time, sleeping all the time. Even though it wasn?t stated clearly, it?s pretty safe to say that the movie wanted you to think she has HIV. And they had sex, which leads me to believe that: 1) Forrest has HIV; and 2) Forrest Jr may also have HIV because he was conceived at this time. What a stupid way to end the movie. It?s not OK for Jenny to marry Forrest at first because he?s too good for her, but it?s totally OK to infect him with HIV. I know this is really mean, but I can?t help it. I must write it down. I read a post by somebody that asks, ?Is Philadelphia meant to be some sort of sequel to Forrest Gump then?? Priceless. |

| Charlotte Gray - PG-13 | You don?t watch Charlotte Gray for the story; you watch it for the performances, and Blanchett and Crudup deliver. Like the changed ending. | December 26, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Entre les Murs (The Class) - PG-13 |
Won the Palme D?Or at Cannes this year. This film doesn?t get the Hollywood treatment ? this isn?t Freedom Writers or Dangerous Minds or even The Ron Clark Story - there are no happy endings. Unlike Hilary Swank or Michelle Pfeiffer or Matthew Perry, François Bégaudeau doesn?t end up changing a class in one year. What you get instead is a film that feels organic and real, perhaps due to the fact that the actors aren?t actors, and they?re playing themselves. There?s no music, and some might even think it?s a documentary. To an extent, it is a documentary. It never feels scripted, even with so much talking. In a tough neighbourhood, not just in France or America, but everywhere, many kids will not have bright futures. In The Class, we see cultures and attitudes and difficult behaviour often clash in the classroom, a microcosm of contemporary France. Armed with the best intentions, teachers brace themselves to not let discouragement stop them from trying to give the best education to their students. It?s a low-paying job and a thankless one, but somebody?s gotta do it. |

| The Private Lives of Pippa Lee - R |
The premise sounds interesting, but in truth, it?s just another quirky, contrived, dysfunctional, indie, menopausal drama. It?s all very Woody Allen, but only half as good. However, you?ve got arguably one of the most remarkable ensembles put together for an indie film in recent memory. The cast is so star-studded that it doesn?t even feel like an indie. This film wants you to think that all the characters are complex, but really, they?re nothing more than caricatures. For some inexplicable reason, it works. The only person out of her league here is Lively, who can?t do anything except look like a husband-snatching slut. Reeves has an appealing, low-key turn as the lost soul who happens to have a huge Jesus tattoo on his chest. He doesn?t have much to do here other than look good. Ultimately, this is a film that I?ll probably never watch again. The film was quite enjoyable while it lasted, but that?s it. Pippa has no life. Sure she has a new fella, a younger one at that, but she has no friends, no apparent job skills, and she?s so boring. Now that she?s no longer an enigma, I feel like I liked her better when she was. |

| This is My Father - R | December 23, 2009 | N/A | ||||
| State of Play - PG-13 | Rather intelligent script, but too many plot twists for its own good. Too many things compressed into 2 hours. Crowe's hair and McAdams' dress sense were distractions, and Affleck mumbled his way through. Made me interested in the BBC 2003 TV serial of the same name. | December 23, 2009 | N/A | |||
