An adpation of Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", presumably titled "Cthulhu" to attract more attention. Besides a much too abrupt ending and a few disturbing subplots thrown in, it's quite good.
As Lovecraft adaptions go, "The Curse" deserves some credit for being relatively faithful to the original story ("The Colour Out of Space".) Unfortunately, the movie itself just isn't very good, mostly due to bad acting, and a few terribly dislikeable characters.
While certainly not his best, Shyamalan has proven that he is still capable of making great movies. Thank goodness. The premise of "The Happening" is original, and really terrifying. No plot twists or surprises in this one, but it doesn't need any. Shyamalan has finally dropped gimmicks and fairy tale plots to get back to the basic element of horror movies: fear.
