in a year where the a new kind of strike against the Greek Cinema Center appears by the name of "Directors in the Mist" ideally altering the meaning of Angelopoulos' film, this strike..or movement if i may say so is quite possibly the most important cinematic yell in the 2000's here in Greece (and with less than zero attendants)

Strella isn't probably the most memorable of love stories but it IS different..without the banalities of the queer crop of the cinematic majority.....it's also possible that it will receive zero to subzero release abroad, for the utmost of facts that Greece is still a tourist attraction (more or less) for the foreign manufacturers...

whatever the case may be...this film is one of 2009's best i've seen, and there are more to come and watch...

A masculine movie in spite of the exceptional twist somewhere in the middle,Koutras is evolving, leaving behind aliens and bourgeois salons, there's simply a bohemian state of free-spirited individuals (with a fine sense of rhythm in the frame by frame observance of the social status) alongside the neglect for but also the casualty of "strange" people.
Orfanou playing the titular transsexual sparkles in her debut and Kokiasmenos presents a stiffed ex-inmate,beginning a chain reaction stretching to a (curiously enough) panegyric finale.

key film to the female obsession and/or flaming endeavor..
i wouldn't call it a manifesto rather a study on the Akerman cause to utopia, perhaps a racing match from the low mediations to arousing upheavals..

i think over-analyzing it might be too much but i have to say, whoever marks it as not interested, then i'd recommend him/her to think again before marking significant films with the red pill,ahem....sorry,the red button i meant ;)

    by Daisy
Les Égarés was a beautiful war drama. The story was understandable why the French people had to escape from Paris when it was invaded by the Germans. Emmanuelle Beart played Odile a schoolteacher who escaped from Paris with her 2 children, on the road her car was bombed by German airplanes. She was helped by Yvan, good performed by Gaspard Ulliel. They ran into the forest and found a house, where they stayed for some days. Yvan was only 17 years old but even so he was desiring Odile, which was way older then him. Their love scene was very sensual and erotic.I was amazed by the beauty of this French actress. The story was real, attractive, original and good.

WOW WOW, my goodness. Whose idea's was this anyways? I guess myself, and to be frank, it was such an amazing horror movie. Not scary at all and it did not try to be either. It was a movie of 4 stories, but each story was not a stand alone, they were all going on at the same time and come together at the end.It was one of the best movies about the legend and traditions of Halloween. Director Michael Dougherty succeeded in this movie to bring the tension in a small town of Ohio on the night of Halloween. The cast was magnificent, I liked Brian Cox and Anna Paquin, they were excellent.

Stinger,a user around here who's one of the experts on extreme cinema and its outputs on commenting society in a stinging manner refers to Black Sheep as an homage,a reminder of the goriness of the 70's and 80's corny delights and i'll have to add as well the Jackson, and why not,the humorous overtones of a Dog Soldiers I Spit on Your Grave..

    only this time..man,it's sheep!!!
and gigantic too,and as Mello, another user mentions about the Kiwi essence,muahahaha..that too but for the most part, the satire is an attempt to mock traditions instead of manipulating the horror elements...

to hell with it,it was a roller-coaster ride and it's rare in the 2000's to find refreshing ideas on a genre constantly decreasing, especially since the bulk of worthless U.S. slashers/gores have made the appearance...

La Piscine (The Swimming Pool) (The Sinners) La Piscine (The Swimming Pool) (The Sinners)
    by Arianeta
Two lovers Alain Delon (an unemployed writer Jean-Paul) and Romy Schneider (Marianne) two of the most preternaturally attractive people on the planet withe exlellant chemistry spend an idyllic poolside vacation in St. Tropez.Their languid summer break is disturbed by the arrival of Marianne?s former boyfriend, Harry, who turns up unexpectedly with his daughter Penelope. Despite appearances that their past differences have been settled, old enmities between Jean-Paul and Harry soon begin to resurface ? with deadly consequences? Alain Delon is on fine form, giving one of his darker performances, a perfect contrast with Romy Schneider?s gentler yet equally tough portrayal of Marianne. Director in La Piscine, shows an almost existentialist minimalism and he creates a chilling portrait of male rivalry and jealousy. The atmosphere was realy good for my pleasure but at the and I was feel sorry about Delon as the women have the first and the last word there. An incredibly groovy late 60s soundtrack from Michel Legrand.

It was a real surprise when the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival 1996, was given to a 5 year old novice actress, Victoire Thivisol, for her role in Ponette. She was really magnificent and this important Award recognized the biggest achievement in the film: Victoire amazing naturalness and outstanding facial expressions in to the most difficult scenes. Watch this movie and you will understand why !
    Ponette Ponette
    by Daisy
Ponette was a sensitive drama but enjoyable to watch. In this movie a 5 year old French girl Victoire Thivisol carried the whole movie. She played Ponette, grieving her mothers death, and she never gave up in trying to get contact with her mother. The strong point of the movie was, it succeeded to bring the viewer into the world of thoughts and feelings of Ponette.I found it very difficult to understand how the director managed to let these children act so perfectly. The storyline was a simple one, but the movies greatness comes from the marvelous acting of the young children. A must to see.

To Live was my fourth movie that I have seen from this excellent Chinese director Yimou Zhang. It was beautiful and so real and heartbreaking at times, you could feel the pain of the lead characters. Yimou traveled the viewer through three decades in the movie making us understand the people, their tragedy, respect, and adoration for the Communist. Gong Li was beautiful and I have seen her in the other movies of this same director. The movie was about this family going through life, surviving tragedies but they continue 'Living', That was the beauty of the film.

    Yesterday Yesterday
    by Daisy
Yesterday was such a good movie because of it simplicity and beauty. It was about Yesterday a South African woman who was infected by her husband with the HIV virus and her struggle to survive. The movie showed the relationship between Yesterday, her daughter Beauty and the teacher. The HIV virus was portrayed with realism and also Yesterday's strength and dignity to face her illness. She took care of her husband till his death, dealing with her illness and gossips and fears of other villagers. It was heartbreaking and it made me feel her pain and sorrow. Acting, directing, all was excellent.

    Delirious,blasphemous and yet ravishingly innovative!
Inspired by the likes of slapstick stars, musical numbers (did i forget to say the obvious William tell reference),there's not exactly a happy ending rather a diversion of functioned tragedy...and Mel Blanc drives the vehicle of lunacy!
Rossini would have loved this for sure.

I saw the one in theaters - the as you say (spoiler alert) "Micah thrown at the camera" ending (END SPOILER ALERT)... I was overall very happy with that film. It was genuinely scary at times/creepy at others and I found I was too bothered (in the middle of the day!) to be home alone after I saw it!

"Summer Hours" is a movie about life just like life is. Such as we see in "L´eau froide", his first movie, Olivier Assayas offer us great and naturalistic interpretations/characters placed in simple stories without almost any action. As realistic as it is possible.

Paris Je T'aime Paris Je T'aime
    by Arianeta
So finally, the city that has inspired so much love gets an omnidus movie that speeks about family, race, religion, crime, love, death, even angels and vampires -- all can be found in this ultimately intertwining narrative. That means this film offers something for every one and provides a different look at the City of Lights a city that never sleep!!! There?s something magical about the small things to be discovered in this big city. So many people so many stories in such a small space, something unexpected and joyful is bound to cross your path one day. All these things makes this movie such a breath of fresh air an European air. Paris Je T'aime is a great cinematographic experience. Is a collection of short films set in Paris and directed by such goods directors as the Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, Gurinder Chadha, Wes Craven, Walter Salles, Alexander Payne and Olivier Assayas. Also the all-star ensemble cast includes international stars such as Natalie Portman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Fanny Ardant, Elijah Wood, Nick Nolte, Bob Hoskins, Juliette Binoche, Emily Mortimer, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Rufus Sewell, Barbet Schroeder, Ludivine Sagnier, Gena Rowlands, Miranda Richardson and Steve Buscemi. Each of the 18 short film shows Paris in a different light, but all the vignettes aim to celebrate the most famous and cosmopolitan city in France. Each director tells the story of an unusual encounter in one of the city's neighborhoods, portraying aspects of the city rarely seen in feature films. Racial tensions stand next to paranoid visions of the city seen from the perspective of an American tourist. A young foreign worker moves from her own domestic situation into her employer's bourgeois environs. An American starlet finds escape as she is shooting a movie. A man is torn between his wife and his lover. A young man working in a print shop sees and desires another young man. A father grapples with his complex relationship with his daughter. A couple tries to add spice to their sex life. Best moments in this movie for me: the story directed by South African writer-director Oliver SchmitzA "Nigerian man (Seydou Boro), dying from a stab wound in the Place des fêtes asks a woman paramedic
(Aïssa Maïga) for a cup of coffee. It is then revealed that he had fallen in love at first sight with her some time previously" and also the story directed by German writer-director Tom Tykwer. After mistakenly believing that his girlfriend, a struggling actress (Natalie Portman), has broken up with him, a young blind man (Melchior Beslon) reflects on the growth and seeming decline of their relationship. The result is that after two hours one gets the sense of having seen a panorama of human experience, of having witnessed a moment of time in all its true fullness. A memorable movie experience like no other. (Thank you Logan for this movie).

Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'enfants) Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'enfants)
    by Arianeta
Love me if you dare is a storng and also a charming and sometimes bittersweet tale about a pair of life-long friends, Julien and Sophie. I've never seen anything quite like this film that melds the magic of childhood memories with the pain of unrequited love. The director armed with a colorful and daring visual palette that often veers into fantasy, spins a touching movie tale about the childhood friends who can't connect as lovers. The enduring image is a toy carousel box, which is first exchanged between Julien (Guillaume Canet) and Sophie (Marion Cotillard) as children. So begins the game - the friend who accepts the box must also perform a dare. Although the boy and girl always remain close, their game stands in the way of romantic involvement but the colors getting darker as the characters age
and their games grow As competitors, neither wants to give in and acknowledge they're in love. Instead, the energy is channeled into ever-more dastardly deeds. Eventually they start to play rough, and the results are personally devastating for both. Julien plays a particularly cruel trick on Sophie at a restaurant, and she strikes back by setting him up for arrest.
Julien's response is particularly clever, and perhaps the meanest thing he does in the movie. Many romance films lose momentum near the end, when the characters are forced into predictable patterns. But the finest moments of Love Me if You Dare occur in the final 20 minutes, when Julien and Sophie finally grapple with the idea of losing each other forever. There's nothing like the joy of watching a movie like this It gaves me a lot sweet emotions and a lesson also "don't play games" it could be distroyed for your life but I don't think that I'm going to follow it..............
