Perhaps the ultimate time travel film as well as an excellent comedy. This film is widely known and popular and will remain a classic. Michael J. Fox is great as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd is absolutely brilliant in perhaps his greatest ever character role. The story is gripping and intense and follows through on all its tie-ins. My personal favorite movie of all time. Zemeckis does wonderful work with camera movement and the set-ups for cinematography are brilliant. An added bonus is that Empire magazine listed Back to the Future in spot 23 for their 500 greatest films of all time - the 23rd film! Top 25 is awesome and shows that people love this film.
Just as fun and exciting as the first with even more twists and turns. Double the time travel chaos and make the Delorean fly and you have a recipe for a great new story. The way they film this using the actors in different roles and in the same places at the same time showed that the editors were working overtime on this one. Not as classic as the first in some ways, but not any less fun! The only thing that hurts it is the fact that Back to the Future is a trilogy. It's one main story and this is the middle of it, that's all. When looked at a whole this film feels much better.
The third part of one big story is executed nicely. The old west as the setting adds new flavor to the series since the same tricks used in other times don't work here. Doc and Marty have to really pull together to get out of situations here and their relationship is given more development. The story is good and the climax is just what you expect from this series. It caps the time-traveling trilogy off with a bang (a time travel bang of course). I love this series.
My favorite of the Herbie movies. It's a classic and full of fun. It began the saga and stars veteran Disney actor Dean Jones. Jones performs at top of his game and his dry wit and sarcastic humor are in good shape. David Tomlinson makes a great villian and is intstantly recognized by true disney fans (notably for Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks). Buddy Hackett is hilarious as the first believer in Herbie as well as the namer - he adds an extra element of comedic relief in this comedy. Beyond the bounds of the term Classic this is a must see of the Disney films. Excellent in acting and technical areas it is definitely worth the watch. The actual VW bug was tricked out and could really do the things (lift its hood, pour out oil, open doors without the use of humans, etc.) which makes it even more believable since the things Herbie does are real.
Spidey is back and better than the first outing. Great camera shots and set-ups keep the audience involved as does the obvious action between Spidey and Doc Ock. The fight sequences are very well done and it feels as similar to the comic battles just real. The use of the Spidey losing his powers and giving up being a superhero comic is well done and adds some extra depth to the character. One of the best superhero/comic based films of all time.
Walt Disney captured the classic mystery well while keeping his own humor and songs in the mix. This mouse Sherlock Holmes is great fun to watch. The animated london of the late 19th century seems like the real thing with fog throughout the cobblestone streets and horse and buggies riding around.
The introduction of the film is a classic detective mystery opening in which an abduction takes place by a mysterious villian witnessed by the hidden daughter of the man abducted. This intro gives way to the opening credits and title and the great theme song this movie has.
Dr. Dawson does a brief narration after the opening credits similar to what Dr. Watson does in the Sherlock Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Basil of Baker Street, the great mouse detective, lives under the home of the real Holmes and has the same personality traits as the literary detective. Basil is played to great appeal and enjoyment by Barrie Ingham who captures the Holmes nature well with a bit of cartoon character flair.
The villian, Professor Ratigan, played by classic actor Vincent Price is emmensly fun to watch as he is truely one of Disney's most ruthless, cold, and evil villians (he drowns orphans and widows) and yet a villian with character and wit.
The animation is quite amazing and fits the time period and theme of the story beautifully. At times feeling like a Victorian English painting the animation always captured the locale. The climatic Big Ben scene features a brilliant use of lighting to show the dark inner workings of the clock and the eerie yellowish glow coming from the luminescent clock face. The wit and humor is right on cue and the whole thing feels more like a mystery adults would watch but with a good bit of humor and music for kids to love it. It speaks to all ages I would say, if you like humor, mystery, suspense, and a good hero vs. villian story.
Classic characters which are developed nicely, it helps since they keep it to a minimum - though the appropriate amount for the story since they could always add more just for the sake of more characters, and a classic mystery story work together to make this a great, though highly under-rated film. Besides being completely enjoyable and fun, it has so much to notice in the animation department. Wonderful and brilliant film.
A classic Sci-Fi comedy that features an all-star SNL cast which is fun and visually stunning. The film has a clever premise and the humor is executed nicely. It is a more specific humor in that it will reach some but not everyone. The special effects add to the film immensly and the it's just fun to watch a movie where you can really get behind the heroes and cheer them on. Intense for easily scared audiences maybe but the laughs keep it in the comedy genre. Murray is on top of his game and Aykroyd, Ramis, Hudson, Moranis, Weaver, and Potts all bring their characters to life in a real and funny way. Simply a classic. The special effects are still good - the eggs popping out and cooking themselves, the library cards flying out of the drawers, the proton packs energy stream, etc. One of the best.
My favorite Star Wars film in the saga. From the spectacular infiltration of Jabba the Hutt's palace and heroic rescue of Han Solo to the amazing final climatic battle on land, in space, and with lightsabers. Keeps the humor of the series while still advancing the plot and tieing up all lose ends. Lots of references to things which are seen in the first three episodes. An exciting and fantastic way to end the saga with all the classic characters and amazing battles.
Laurel and Hardy are hilarious in this feature film of theirs. Enjoyable songs for the most part but the real treat is seeing the fairy tales and nursery rhymes come alive. The characters are classic especially the cat and the fiddle, the mouse, and the three little pigs. Henry Brandon plays a great old man in Barnaby and Felix Knight has a great operatic voice. Once again the film is made by Laurel and Hardy as they play with peewees, fight the bogeymen, and lead an army of wooden soldiers to battle along with the rest of Toyland! Lots of fun and lots of laughs with colored in film to make it even more vivid and wonderful. Great to watch anytime but Christmas time is a great setting for it just for the soldiers part - its not a seasonal film at all. One of Laurel and Hardy's best. Makes me laugh every time Barbaby gets hit with the rolling pin! A great operetta that's gaurenteed to at least bring a smile to your face.
Exquisite music and superbly choreographed action scenes coupled with good acting and Sean Connery (the original James Bond) as Indy's dad make this the best Indy film in my opinion. An age old story like the Holy Grail sees new light in this film and is handled perhaps the most realistically (for an unrealistic object). The set designs really help make this an even better film as they make the locations feel real and interactive. The designs are lavish yet not overdone and the music while impressive never outdoes the story. The story opens with a young Indy showing us important clues to Indy such as his first whip lesson, his first attempt to get an artifact for a museum, how he got his fear of snakes, and how he got his hat which makes true Indy fans love this all the more since we get to learn why Indy is the way he is. My favorite in the series and I love how classic characters like Marcus Brody and Sallah are brought back in to work along side Indy and his dad making it perhaps the greatest Indy adventure of them all.
Amazing concept which panned out into a hilarious film. Deserves to be in AFI's top 100 comedies and I'm glad it is since it's one of my favorites. Bill Murray gives one of his best comedic performances and Harold Ramis directs a classic and fun film.
The 1930's radio program gets new life in this stylized film. Another incredible music score from Jerry Goldsmith along with great special effects and sweeping camera shots which move the action along help to make this a fun and exciting watch. The surround sound adds extra depth to the film - especially for the Shadow's notorious laugh (one of the staples of the radio program). A great cast, including Alec Baldwin, Penelope Ann Miller, John Lone, Peter Boyle, Ian McKellan, Tim Curry, and Jonathan Winters helps to bring good talent to a the iconic character's film debut. Lighting and camera shots are key to the look and feel of the movie and 1930's New York never looked better. The use of the Shadow using his powers to alter his appearance in order to get the old radio pic and comics of the Shadow is kind of cool. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows....
Superb film. As the first full CGI film this one really delivers. A great all-star cast and an incredible story makes this a fantastic classic. This is the Disney/Pixar film that started it all. It was clever to use toys as the characters since it had never really been done before and is what made this a hit. The most original of the Pixar I think besides Monsters, INC.
Absolutely funny and enjoyable. Shirley Temple is adorable as usual and supported by a hilarious cast. This one makes me laugh every time and is my favorite Shirley Temple movie. The verbal repartee is witty and often funnier than the slapstick in the film. Great tapdancing and songs plus fun situations make this a classic Temple film.
Amazing and awe-inspiring. One of the best films I have ever seen. Jimmy Stewart gives a great performance and Claude Rains gives an equally notworthy one. Great direction and a great cast make this a film that must be seen. The ideals ring just as true today and the game of politics hasn't changed a whole lot. This is a film you just have to see, it's too hard to put all it is in words. The greatest pure red-white-and-blue American film ever!
Wonderful comic-based film about a cool hero who uses a jet pack to save the day. Timothy Dalton once again delivers a superb performance as an actor gone bad while the film has a great 1930's feel with lots of action, comedy, and drama. A classic that can be watched again and again.
Hilarious and in my opinion the funniest Ernest movie. Jim Varney is at his best as the naive and dim-witted hero Ernest P. Worrell. Playing dual roles as hero and villian Varney out does himself along with some of his classic character routines (such as the old lady in green). Shockingly funny - especially due to Ernest getting magnetized every time he is electracuted. His jail break techniches are classic slapstick and the whole film makes me laugh. I really enjoyed seeing him play the more serious and sinister role of the villian - a nice change of acting from the bumbling Ernest.
Incredible film. Wonderful in acting and technical aspects. A must for film people. Breathtaking and manages to deal with real life questions in a powerful way. One of my favorite films.
This is an amazing film showing the life of one of America's greatest heroes. A man who fully showed what our country is about by having God and country first. Wonderfull acting by Gary Cooper who was handpicked by the real Alvin York. Walter Brennan also delivers a great performance. A film that should stand out in film history as one of the all time greats this definitely deserves its title as a classic.
This is truly an achievement in film. Deserving its four Oscar wins, including best film editing, this is perhaps the best live action and animation cross movie ever. Featuring cartoons from Looney Tunes, Droopy, Woody Woodpecker, Betty Boop, and Walt Disney plus the clever creations of Roger Rabbit, Jessica Rabbit, Benny the Cab, and Baby Herman help to make the animation so much more by using characters people love in cameos. All the animation is done in it's early styles and only animation done before and up till 1947 (the year the movie is set in) is used to stay consistent. Bob Hoskins makes a great private investigator (he even has a maltese falcon bust in his office) who wants worked for the toons but after a toon killed his partner brother he switched from laughing to liquor. Christopher Lloyd plays the creepy Judge Doom who has the only way to kill a Toon: The Dip. With classic gags and clever filming this is a film that will entertain audiences for years to come. Alan Silvestri gives another incredible score and Zemeckis turns in another film that proves his directorial skill and adds another classic to his filmography.
Perhaps the best modern monster movie. High paced action and adventure mixed with humor and horror elements make this an enjoyable and intense watch. One of my favorites.
Equally as clever and fun as the original. The additional characters are fun and seeing our favorites head out on a big world journey is quite entertaining. Very charming and well done it has a little bit for everyone.
Fresh, colorful, and full of classic Star Wars moments and characters. Breathes new life into the franchise and has the best lightsaber fight besides Obi-Wan and Anakin in episode three. Qui-Gon Jinn is awesome and podracing is awesome. Set before the Imperial Empire the vibrant colors and shiny technology shows that this is still during the years of peace with the Jedi Order and that things have not yet declined into the dull, grey and Sith run Galactic Empire age as seen in 4-6. Very fun and enjoyable.
One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It shows the struggles that William Wilberforce went through in his fight against the British slave trade. It is performed magnificantly by all invloved especially Gruffudd, Gambon, and Finney. Touching and moving on both slavery and belief in God. This shows the amazing events surrounding the infamous song in an amazing way. A classic in our modern era of movies that doesn't have to be course or crude or even dark to be a wonderful film.
Very good rendition of the comic. Spider-Man comes to life as does the other characters from the comics - notably Mary Jane, J. Jonah Jameson, Uncle Ben and Aunt May, and the Osborns. The Green Goblin looks a bit goofy in an all green armor costume but it still works. A classic to be sure.
Perhaps the most classic and arguably the best of the Don Knotts' films (definitely of his Universal Studios films). The film begins with some classic Knotts gags and the use of his nervous shaking is used nicely throughout the film. TV actors are scattered throughout as characters and the whole thing is enjoyable due to the humorous take and lightheartedness of the film making it very viewer-friendly. Vic Mizzy's music is eerie and fun at the same time constantly keeping our senses tuned to the story and events and adding to the humor or "hauntings". Good timing, acting, and humor make this a lot of fun to watch. A classic of good fun (albeit B movie) cinema history.
