| The Pornographer - Unrated |
If you are expecting a film full of wild sex and gratuitous nudity then think again. Whilst there is one fairly graphic scene (which led to the BBFC cutting the "money shot"), the central plot focuses on an aged director who returns to pornography in order to make some much needed cash. However, he discovers that the elegant eroticism of yesteryear has now been replaced with a factory-line style industry churning out unemotional films in order to make a quick buck. Dismayed by this perceived emptiness around him, he begins to withdraw from those close to him amd he begins to contemplate the apparent meaningless of his existence.
Obviously with this type of plot outline this isn't going to be a laugh aminute affair. The pace is slow and with the central character steeped most of the time in deep depression, it's certainly not the easiest films to watch. For this type of film to work you need to feel something for the character/s but the main lead here is so unrelentingly cold you become to detached to care what happens to him. Diehard europhiles may get something out of this but casual viewers are advised to look elsewhere. |

| Cruising - R | Nice cinematography and unearthly musical score but the plot seems a little piecemeal and doesn't quite pull together. Worth a look nonetheless. | September 17, 2009 | N/A | |||

| La femme infidèle (The Unfaithful Wife) - Unrated | Never really understood the high regard that Chabrol is held in some quarters but that said I've also taken something away from his films even if they fail to overly impress. La Femme Infidèle is no different which despite suffering from a rather languid pace benefits from good central performances. | August 17, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Fail-Safe - Unrated | A taunt and well acted, if not quite believable, thriller. I'm a big fan of Lumet's work and once again he doesn't disappoint. The claustrophobic settings and tense dialogue carries across Lumet's socio-political message. Highly recommended. | July 22, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Nuits rouges (Shadowman) - PG | Despite the awful dubbing and some random soundtrack selection I quite enjoyed this one. Yes at times it was rather slapstick and amateurish but there were some great visuals (particularly the red masked villain) and had a slick pace about it. Worth a look. | July 22, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Judex - Unrated | Despite it's reputation I found this one to be a rather plodding and haphazard affair. Whilst the opening section of the film is gripping and visually arresting unfortunately the early interest just dissipates out as the film progresses. Rent only. | July 22, 2009 | N/A | |||
| The Dark Knight - PG-13 | Entertaining but not as earth-shattering as some make it out to be. It felt all a little piecemeal in places and the whole supposedly "dark" moral aspect of the film feels all very Chinese fortune cookie.... | July 22, 2009 | N/A | |||
| The Verdict - R | Slow burning and understated gem of a movie. Great performance from Newman and despite some flawed logic this is a fantastic piece of cinema. Worth a rent. | July 22, 2009 | N/A |
