This is what a movie should be. It has drama, romance, intrigue, comedy, suspense, betrayal, music and Nazis...it has it all! My all-time favorite movie.
One of the best movies ever made, and certainly the best hockey movie ever made. It is the definitive life-in-the-minors hockey movie...the hockey equivalent of "Bull Durham". I could watch it over and over...hell, I could just about quote it from beginning to end. It never gets old.
A true-to-life look at life in minor-league baseball. Kevin Costner plays "Crash" Davis, a grizzled bus league vet who's expected to teach young phenom pitcher "Nuke" LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) and guide him to the Majors. Susan Sarandon lights up the screen as Annie Savoy, Nuke's world-wise girlfriend, who's better suited for Crash. Laughs, Life and Love abound in this comedy-romance...with some great baseball scenes mixed in for good measure.
The funniest movie ever made about golf. It's also one of the most oft-quoted movies in history. A wacky story of a bunch of screwballs at Bushwood Country Club, brought to life by a virtual who's who of comedy. The most fun you can have in plaid pants.
The one that started it all...and still the best one of the bunch in my opinion. George Lucas' masterpiece breathed new life into the movie business and was a breath of fresh air for moviegoers everywhere.
The last and best episode in the Indy trilogy. This one showcases a fine performance by the legendary Sean Connery as Indy's father (no explanation of why Indy has no Scottish accent, but who cares?). The interplay between Connery and Ford add new depth to the series and to the character of Indy, and the action sequences are riveting as always.
Another Bogey classic! Fueled by the explosive on-screen chemistry between Bogey and Lauren Bacall (in her sultry screen debut), this WWII-era drama is based on an Ernest Hemingway novel and features a remarkable performance from the legendary Walter Brennan. A masterpiece of international intrigue.
The final chapter of the original Star Wars trilogy. Lucas' masterpiece reaches its heroic climax. Evil is destroyed and order is restored to the galaxy. Great visuals bring to life more diverse worlds from Lucas' rich imagination. The climax lies in the final showdown between evil and a bunch of Muppets. And the cute and fuzzy Muppets win!
A great feel-good sports movie based on the 1980 US Olympic hockey team that stood up against the big bad Commies. If you lived through it the first time, this is a great trip down memory lane. If you didn't, this movie tells the story beautifully. If you can't get excited watching this movie, you're not an American.
The best film version, in my opinion, of one of Shakespeare's finest histories. I still get goosebumps during the St. Crispin's Day speech. "...we few, we happy few, we band of brothers...for he who sheds his blood with me today shall be my brother..." It doesn't get any better than that. Kenneth Branagh's direction and acting in the title role both cement his place as today's finest Shakespearean filmmaker.
Probably Spielberg's least known film, and by far his funniest. Think Animal House meets Tora Tora Tora. It's a hilarious farce about war hysteria in California in the wake of Pearl Harbor.
Another great movie. While it moves a little slowly in parts, the action scenes are top-notch as usual. Not as good as the bookend movies, but still very entertaining and fleshes out a lot of characters nicely. I especially loved the Battle of Helm's Deep. One of the best battle sequences ever put on film.
A fantastic conclusion to a great trilogy. Good triumphs over evil and peace is restored to the world. It was a long road to get here, and we all knew how it would end, but what a ride! I especially love the emergence of Sam as a heroic figure. It's always nice to see the sidekick get some hero time. Great film all the way around.
