Iron Man
by montyOne word to describe this movie: AWESOME! I saw it Thursday night with some friends with a packed audience and this movie did not disappoint. Robert Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark, the wealthy industrialist who makes weapons for the US government. When he gets captured by some insurgents in a foreign land who force him to build a weapon of mass destruction, Tony resolves to start helping the world by taking down bad guys like these. This movie takes the essence of the comic book Iron Man and brings it to life wonderfully. Downey Jr never takes a wrong step in this role. No one else could have pulled it off. The supporting cast is also solid with Jeff Bridges as his rival Stane, Terrence Howard as his friend James Rhodes, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony's assistant Pepper Potts. Paltrow is terrific. This movie weaves incredible visual effects with a solid story that mixes drama, action, and humor effectively. I already claim Iron Man as the second best comic book movie, right behind X2. And I plan to see it again. Oh and stay for the scene after the end credits when Tony receives a special visitor. It was that scene and others throughout the movie like when he dons the red and gold armor that made all my fanboy dreams come true. A great way to start the summer movie season.

Christine Everheart: Tony Stark! Christine Everheart, Vanity Fair magazine
Tony Stark: Hi, yeah okay, go.
Christine Everheart: Mr. Stark, you've been called the Da Vinci of our time; what do you say to that?
Tony Stark: Absolutely ridiculous, I don't paint.
Christine Everheart: What do you say to your other nickname, the 'Merchant of Death'?
Tony Stark: That's not bad.Hey, you should really see this!

No Country for Old Men
by montyA solid thriller from the Coen Brothers that is really good for the first hour and a half, then that awful ending rears it's ugly head. Set in 1980 Texas, a man named Llewelyn Moss (a strong performance by Josh Brolin) stumbles across a drug deal gone bad and finds $2 million in cash. He takes the money and sets off a chain of events that culminates in violence and bloodshed. A psychopathic killer named Anton (played by Javier Bardem) is hot on his tail and will kill anyone that gets in his way. Tommy Lee Jones plays veteran Sheriff Ed Tom Bell who becomes involved in the proceedings. Very well done film with highly graphic action scenes and some well timed humor. The entire cast is good throughout especially Kelly MacDonald as Brolin's wife. Don't let the ending put you off. The same thing happened with The Departed, when it unraveled in the last twenty minutes or so. No Country is clearly the best film of all the ones that were nominated for an Oscar, and deserved to take home the gold. But it's doesn't quite reach that greatness level. Still, it's a must see film.
