Io non ho paura (I'm Not Scared) - R A subtle yet potent coming-of-age tale cum thriller by Gabriele Salvatores . It is about a ten year old boy (Michele) living in rural Italy. Michele fortuitously discovers a hidden hole and is excited that he has found some treasure. Instead he is surprised to find a desperate boy of his own age chained to the wall. He struggles to come to terms with the boys' presence in the pit and the reasons behind it. This touching movie examines the awakening of conscience through the mind of a ten year old boy. A playful, innocent boy is suddenly plunged into the dark, treacherous world of adults.

The plot has a linear flow and the images of Italian countryside are stunning. Giuseppe Cristiano's portrayal of ten year old Michele is engaging and natural .

The aspect I really admire is that the whole perspective is through the eyes of a young boy. Director Gabriele Salvatores skillfully reflects the innocence and tension of a child's mind in an intricate & 'unpretentious' manner.

Onibaba - Unrated Plot - The story is based in 14th century feudal Japan where an old woman & her daughter-in-law kill wandering samurai & sell their clothes & weapon to buy food for their survival . Soon , a friend of old woman's son returns from war & tries to seduce her daughter-in-law. This sparks a series of events based on jealousy, rage & desires. Old woman goes to extreme length to thwart the budding relationship .

The script is original & compelling. Viewer's are captivated by the images of long grass & the women killing samurai's for survival. Then we are exposed to the mental nuances of the characters when lust sparks relentless bouts of rage, passion & revenge. Theme of sin, punishment, fables & folklore are omnipresent.

Film is beautifully shot in black & white. Director Kaneto Shindo uses a ruthless & blatantly stark script & imagery which includes plenty of violence & nudity. Highlight of the film remains it's script & the night sequences in the last 15-20 minutes are sheer pleasure which will leave it's mark on the viewer's mindset.
It's a dark & gruesome tale - which examines the limits that a person can go to in order to survive.

The Cement Garden - Unrated The plot focuses on the lives of four children after their father dies & mother is sick with a mysterious illness. Two eldest kids- Jack & Julie have the responsibility of managing the household with meager resources. They share a tense relation which is bordering on edges of attraction. Soon mother's illness gets worse which unfolds a strange change of events.

It's a dark tale without any pretensions . The ambiance is bleak & dreary. Director takes a realistic approach on the strange relation between the siblings. The teenage actors have done a fair job in portraying the angst & confusion which marks their lives.

Au Hasard Balthazar - Unrated The film tells a haunting story of farm girl Marie & her donkey - Balthazar. Balthazar is born into servitude, a life of suffering & pain. Bresson uses a an innocuous donkey to reflect upon life's despair & virtue. There are marked but subtle references to spiritualism & theme of transcendence. The beauty of this film lies in it's simplicity & minimalist approach. The cursed fate of the girl & her donkey probes the various facets of decaying humanity in it's bare form.

Stunning camera work & minimal dialogue mingled with poetic realism gives the viewer's a most profound & engaging cinematic experience. Despite it's spiritual & transcendental themes the plot never strays away from realism as the director gives an unpretentious reflection of life's despair & sins. It also has one of the most poignant endings which leaves its imprint on the viewer's mind.

Damage - R It portrays the self-destructive tendencies of an individual from a different perspective. At many times the scenes become too dramatic for a movie with artistic aspiration . Director tries too hard to press certain points & the nuances are lost .. June 8, 2009

Revolutionary Road - R Highlight of this movie is the stirring performance given by Kate Winslet & Leonardo DiCaprio . They minutely portray the nuances of the tumultuous relation they shared. Somewhere along the line I felt that the script had nothing new to offer despite the fact it was compelling in parts. Examining of a relationship where a couple find themselves suffocated is an oft repeated theme . The plot becomes predictable but I think one can still enjoy the brilliant acting . May 28, 2009

Obsluhoval Jsem Anglického Krále (I Served the King of England) - R This movie tells the journey of a man who plays different roles in various bars & restaurants in order to achieve his dream of becoming a millionaire. Art direction captures the charm of old-world Prague . It's a sumptuous mix of ambition , splendor & extravagance . This witty comedy also reflects on the compulsions & principles of men in times of war in a subtle manner. May 4, 2009

Changeling - R Movie brings to the fore a mother's plight when her son goes missing . It portrays the incompetency of the police & levels they will stoop to prove themselves correct.
Cinematography is good. There are no hysterics in the movie . For some this may be a drawback but for me that's the beauty . Jolie is simply brilliant in a restraint but potent performance.
