i guess this is the second German movie that i watched after der Untergang (this one's good but i need more...German.. not nazis). i must tell ya, this movie is a GREAT GREAT one because it gave me after effect as soon as i finished watching it, i didn't feel bored nada.. the characters seem to grow deeper along the movie, the story could be a true story according to history there..if u see it only in the first layer, it is depressing but after you listen carefully to the dialogues, it's a movie full of love, passion and they are nothing without sacrifice rite? there are surprises from each one of the characters.. for a debut movie, the director really got it going ON! saludos! uber allez..
Lost In Translation 2. Lost In Translation R 4.5 Stars
if u ever feel lonely.. watch this movie.. then suddenly u won't feel that u're the only person who feels alone..and abandoned.. it's lonely when u're with someone but u cant seem to understand what he/she's speaking.. imagine u're alone in Japan or anywhere where u dont speak their language and neither do they speak urs.. all u need is a companion, older or younger is not a problem anymore, the thing is they can understand u! sounds desperate? well u would be in that situation.. i love sofia chose Japan to be the mainland of this lost movie.. i could almost smell the white bed sheets in the hotel scarlett's staying.. bill murray really seems OLD and adrifted from his prime time which is why he's needed in this movie.. one thing stucks in my head is 'what did Bob say to Charlotte at the end of this movie'... oh no... here i go again............ uh oh dont 4get to listen 2 Phoenix's Too Young, u're never too old to dance!
Little Miss Sunshine 3. Little Miss Sunshine R 5.0 Stars
blood is thicker than water.. it's not some kind of bullsh*t, it's true.. no matter how hard u get along with ur family members, no matter how they had hurt u, no matter how u've been misunderstood by 'em or on the other hand u misunderstand em completely..in the end is the family that matters... this movie is a must see family movie, especially when u thought that u need not a lovey dovey kind of story.. definitely this tells us about a dysfunctional american style family where each of its members seems to have a chance of winning some wacko of the year award.. then they're together in a journey they dont know that the end is not the destination, but the Means.. gay suicidal uncle, stop talking becoz of Nietzsche brother, hard worker so dont wanna end up as a loser father, a mother who glued them up 2gether, a grandfather who's a typical ol' in a time of anykind of war man.. and little girl who's sweet n all... no mouth kissing in this movie! grreat... it's rare though.. and i've never been grateful to hear the word 'F*ck' except for this movie.. u could always fix what's been broken, but nobody says it was easy okay...
Y Tu Mama Tambien 4. Y Tu Mama Tambien R 5.0 Stars
hmm.. this is one HOT movie.. well, a bit kinda gross if u start to think about tendencies to become paedophiliac.. hahaha.. this movie is about Journey.. to place where no one knows exist, including the travellers themselves.. Julio n Tenoch have been bestfriends for a long time without acknowledging their fate would suddenly change when they meet Luisa, a married woman, ill (no one knows except her), and hurt for her husband been sleeping with another women.. the dialogues are in spanish, so for whatever reason it sounds sexy to me haha.. in the car they talk about charrolastra, friendship, who f*cked whose gf, anything comes to mind.. and more secrets reveal from each other except Luisa.. she's like a catalyst of those two youngsters. Heaven's Mouth, boca del paradiso, is real eventually... i envy them for finding the most beautiful beach in life... the ending is great too.. not happy for me, but it's definitely naturally possible... many sex scenes, nude cute guyz haha.. Eagle eye cherry plays cover of To Love Somebody in its ost.. cool! and marco antonio solis' si no te hubieras ido really put the steamy mood....and it hurt.
Great Expectations 5. Great Expectations R 3.5 Stars
i think c. dicken would probably be screaming from his grave to find his classic time story turned into a depressing modern love story colored in green heehee.. well, i haven't read the book yet but i guess the feeling would be much different than understanding the social gap theme from watching this movie.. anw i still heart the movie for its beauty, how it tells a story about a boy who falls in love with a girl n keep lovin her eventho he's hurt by her over n over again..the social gap's not really clearly shown, but i dont know why NOT? ethan hawke fits for the role clumsy but sincere Finn.. gwyneth paltrow perfectly roles out icy cold Estella.. DKNY green wardrobe totally makes everybody green in envy.. and who could forget the way the characters dance to 'besame mucho' by cesaria evora?? verrry grrreat soundtrack! have one of ur own. and dance urself to it...
Frida 6. Frida R 5.0 Stars
a very strong movie. strong cinematography.. strong characters.. strong plot.. strong actors.. this movie is a journey to life of Frida Kahlo, the talented painter with the most emotional way expressing her feeling.. frida kahlo has a herstory that is extraordinary, i'm amazed that she could get thru her life until the death comes.. with the accident, her marriage to a Panzon - the endless affairs from dieguito esp. with her own sister (talk bout betrayal here), her mother's death, her physical disablity..her affair with Leon Trotsky (wow) and.. her misscarriage which the most painful time for her.. and all that she felt, being expressed to her beautiful n super honest paintings.. it hurts to see them.. salmita as Kahlo here is perrrfect, she acts naturally and makes frida comes to life.. molina fits the panzon, the jerk, but his true love is only for Frida.. my most memorable scene was when frida cut her hair short with a background song 'paloma negra' the soundtracks are born to be played in this movie.. la bruja (this is vulgar), la llorona, alcoba azul... oh chavela vargaz n lila downs, a mi me gustan nosotras.. su voz... nos quiero.. on d top of it all, u wont regret watching this movie.

Thank God, as I'd heard, this film was MUCH better than the pathetic waste of space that was the 2006 remake.

It's not hard to enjoy this film, despite the fact that it was made 34 years ago. Yes, you have to do your best to put yourself in the shoes of a 1974 moviegoer, but it's not too hard.

It was actually creepy, and funny in parts too (intentionally). Also, I laughed at some of the fashion/style of dress (what's up with the white people 'fros?)

Much better and I wish I had seen this one first.
Wrong time of the year maybe, but finally got around to seeing this. Worth a rent for sure.

Don't shit your breeches, it's the 1974 version.

OK, this has been done before, several times...and the whole, "I see Asian dead people" isn't scary or even creepy, but...

It was still better than I thought it was going to be, and it was nice to see Joshua Jackson in a halfways mainstream film for once. I do think he's a good actor who needs a new agent.

There was a "twist" in the middle which I figured out almost right away and a twist at the end which made it cool and enough to make it worth watching the DVD.

I will say that studios either need to abandon the whole genre tho entirely, or do something to liven it up a bit. Maybe a J horror-inspired ORIGINAL non-remake film that's not totally based on dead people haunting the living...
Good for fans of Joshua Jackson, or if you a fan of the genre. Otherwise, nothing too special.

Amazingly funny in a perfectly witty way that says a big FUCK YOU to political correctness and just has a good time with itself.

Also very shocking at times, and expertly acted by Farrell and Gleeson in a way that pulled us in to their characters so well.

OK, I know I had originally decided I didn;t want to see this film but I changed my mind.

And it's pretty decent for what it is. Yes, there are definitely a lot of "funny parts" that just aren't funny (like what was the deal with Bill Murray in the tree?), but I did laugh enough to be mostly satisfied.

I still see Hathaway as a one-trick pony who gets parts for her looks and by playing characters with personalities so close to what I imagine is her own.

Most of you will wait for the DVD. No need to rush out.

The Dark Knight The Dark Knight
    5.0 Stars by Brian
Some of you might hate me for this review, but at least read it before you string me from the rafters.

The Dark Knight delivers more than even Iron Man or The Crystal Skull could. And it makes the Incredible Hulk look like a joke. It's easily the best Batman of the franchise,

Bale makes Keaton look frumpy and Clooney Clooney look like a bad joke.

Heath Ledger's performance WAS amazing. I was amazed at how he took all of himself out of the character of the Joker and just WAS the joker.

The supporting characters also were expertly cast and did great job.

The one thing I'm not compelled to do is what I considered a lot of people's over-exaggeration/ I'm not speechless, it didn't make me cry, iy's not the best movie of all time (all of which I read in different reviews_. This, s I said, is just a slight overstatement in my opinion that makes me uncomfortable.

However, I will say that The Dark Knight delivers amazingly as the best "summer film" of this year. It's pacing is near perfect and it is totally deviod of cheesy one-liners and moments that made me cringe.

For all this, it gets five starts from mw. Because it delivers.

    But it's not a masterpiece.
Go see this now! Dance, monkeys, dance!

    Charlie Bartlett Charlie Bartlett
    4.0 Stars by Brian
To me, the plot/story of Charlie Bartlett is most certainly secondary to that of Anton Yelchin's acting, and the interplay between him and Downey and Davis.

Hope Davis is inspired casting, but this film just really showcases Yelchin's acting ability.

The plot is OK, and the execution is admittedly aimed at a younger audience than I, but it's still fun to watch and will be enjoyable to a wide audience.

I wanted to see this mostly because I am a far of Elizabeth Banks (Scrubs) and it looked like it had potential as far as the rest of the cast goes.

Unfortunately it was really slow and Ryan Reynolds' overly-makeuped/fake-tanned face got on my nerves (make up artists, ease up please!).

It did have a cute ending tho. But it was a struggle getting there.

Nothing special. See if you are a fan of the genre, and especially of one of the actors.

    Great Perormance from Jake Gyllenhaal
Donnie Darko is a paranoid schizophrenic anti-social teenager having therapy and using medication. He has visions of a giant rabbit, Frank, the Fuzzy Bunny, who instructs him to make violent acts, like destroying the fire hydrant and piping of his high-school. This movie suprised me and its one of my all time fav films. A great perormance from Jake Gyllenhaal

    The Savages The Savages
    5.0 Stars by Daniel
The Savages is a near-perfectly made, flawlessly acted gem. Suddenly forced into 'real life' at 42 and 39 years of age, siblings Jon and Wendy have to care for their estranged father, who has developed dementia. A simple, character-driven story dealing with a messy subject in a subtle, intelligent and cathartic way that pulls none of its punches and never wallows in sentimentality. Refreshingly told with beautiful camera work and filled with truthful observations, melancholy, black humor and poignancy, this is just a wonderful film. It's essentially a two-hander (though unusually we do also see things from the father's perspective sometimes), with Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman never putting a foot wrong. The Savages reminded me very much of Alexander Payne's About Schmidt and Sideways (and Payne is one of the Exec Producers) - not just in terms of style but in substance too. Definitely worthy of your time.

I guess no one really liked this one that much, or so it seems, but to me this was perfectly in line with Donnie Darko and Richard Kelly.

You have to pay attention, suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride. And I did.

Got this one for my personal collection and I need to watch it again.

While not as exciting as, say, Crank or Transporter 2, (or, I hope, The Bank Job and Death Race), Chaos was good enough to keep my attention all the way thru.

Although the plot had been done before, the movie was much better than I was expecting. Despite a severely diluted version of Statham's usally badass characters, surprisingly it was Phillippe and SNIPES (what???!) who went a ways toward saving this from mediocrity.

Def worth a rent on DVD.

    Osmosis Jones Osmosis Jones
    3.5 Stars by Danielle
Murray's character, Frank, is the kind of Homer Simpson-esque boob whose idea of a perfect father-daughter weekend is a trip to the annual Buffalo Wing Festival. His diet consists mainly of beer, chips, and Circus Peanuts, with nary a leafy green in sight. Daughter Shane (Elena Franklin), appalled at her pop's careless consumption, keeps hassling the couch potato to shape up and eat right. But Frank's poor noshing habits and lazy lifestyle leave him vulnerable to illness. Intercut with the tale of Frank's sorry existence is the microscopic view inside him, which reveals a sprawling metropolis of cells, germs, and bacteria functioning under the flailing leadership of Mayor Phlemming (voiced by William Shatner). The "City of Frank" offers Jones' most rewarding comic cleverness, with numerous verbal puns related to human biology and an ample array of visual gags. Screenwriter Marc Hyman makes the most of matching each biological element and function to a real-world urban counterpart. Posters for "Peace in the Middle Ear" and "The Million Membrane March" pepper the background, and everything Frank does, from eating to peeing, involves buttons, gizmos, machinery, and the interaction of countless citizens. Nasty germs hole up in Frank's armpits, liver, and festering toes, while his stomach terminal is as busy as O'Hare Airport on Thanksgiving. Hardly thriving, the City of Frank is in disrepair and marked for destruction by the invading, nasty Red Menace, Thrax (Laurence Fishburne), who slices and burns his way through Frank's tissues with a 48-hour agenda. Only Osmosis and his straight-laced, cold-capsule partner, Drix (David Hyde Pierce), see the threat, and the two set about saving their human host from imminent death despite the Frank Police Department's universal disbelief and disdain. The idea of a man's insides being a city is a wonderfully entertaining one, with opportunities for so many jokes. We're told that the Love Handles district is "the fastest-growing community in Frank," and the mayor (William Shatner) is thrilled to announce they're about to begin construction on a third chin. The Mafia hangs out in the armpits, because that's what most closely resembles a sauna. The Farrelly brothers directed the live portions of this film, while the animated sequences were directed by Piet Kroon and Tom Sito. Personally, I enjoyed the animated sequences (which often reminded me of Space Jam) more than the live action ones, if only because there seems to be more life pumped into the drawings than the real life characters. While Bill Murray is funny, he isn't used to his full comedic extent. Still, the live-action stuff with Murray is amusing, and the animated sequences are basically entertaining, so it's not a complete waste of time.

La Vie en Rose (La Mome) La Vie en Rose (La Mome)
    3.5 Stars by Félix
Melodramatic and annoying everytime Piaf's childhood is portrayed, the movie was starting to piss me off for all the hype on Cotillard's performance as I believed it wouldn't live up to its buzz because of the awful movie I was seeing... and then the 20 year-old Piaf came to the rescue and Cotillards breathtaking, legendary ability to get into the french chanteuse's skin appears on screen and knocks us out of our chairs.

Unfortunately, that's it. The movie fails to follow Cotillard's rythm and flops over and over again into the same melodramatic, soap-opera, Lifetime TV movie crap and it becomes one more biopic for the bunch.

It is true: if it weren't for Cotillard, this would be an awful movie. With her, it's great but not extraordinary. She deserved a better movie. She really did.
I cried my eyes out during the final 20 minutes or so but overall, it deserves respect ONLY because of Marion Cotillard's larger than life performance.
The movie per se isn't THAT good.

I am glad that this isn't as surreal as people say it is. This is a film that judges Leopold and Loeb not because of their sexuality and identity but because of their immoral choices. It doesn't see their acts of homosexuality as a perversion but it sees them as parts of their identities. Not as artistic as but more interesting than the film Poison, this is a great and important part of the New Queer Cinema.
