The Dark Knight
by KatieBatman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham's new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker's crimes grow more and more deadly. Unlike Batman Begins, The Dark Knight has proven not to disappoint. Heath Ledger as The Joker is clearly the backbone of this film. His audacious performance is so profoundly terrifying and believable that he literally brings The Joker to life. You start to think The Joker is real, and no longer just a character on screen. The late Ledger's final act is sure to leave you in awe and fascination. Highly recommended.

Nell
by GaryJodie Foster proves why she is one of the greatest actors of our time in this beautifully realised adaptation of the play 'Idioglossia' by Mark Handley. Incredible cinematography and heartwarming performances make this memorable drama shine and Liam Neeson is simply charming. The theme of innocence is powerful to behold and without spoiling, I can promise you one of the most satisfying endings you could wish for. Beautiful. Don't miss it!
I know a bunch of you have seen it, but this beautiful showcase of Jodie Fosters talent deserves another watch. If you haven't caught this yet, do yourself a favour.

Undead or Alive
by GaryThis very unusual mix of zombie move, comedy and western makes for an interesting watch, even if the genres don't mix entirely well together. Those who delight in B grade horror will find plenty to enjoy. The comedy sometimes falls flat, but there are some genuinely funny moments too. A relatively unknown cast does alright, but it's the Romeroesque makeup effects that get the real giggles. Dont miss the zombie outlaws penis falling off while he is urinating... nuff said.
This "zombedy" is a weird mix and it won't appeal to everyone, but those who love B grade goofy horror westerns will love it!

Run, Fat Boy, Run
by GaryFun little comedy with some genuine laughs and some truly likeable characters. Despite being ultimately predictable, Simon Pegg and Dylan Moran are such a joy to watch. The direction of Edgar Wright is sorely missed, but David Schwimmer (of all people!) does a half decent job. The message leans a little toward the soppy, but the sight gags of Pegg in tiny shorts (and Moran in no shorts) are well worth your time. Lighthearted and good for a laugh.
Very fun little comedy! It's no 'Hot Fuzz' or 'Shaun Of The Dead', but it's still very funny and sweet.

Saw IV
by GaryYou either love or hate these films that pander to the 'torture porn' genre. Personally, I dont mind 'em, but feel a bit dirty afterward. With this one, I have a new respect for the creators and well, I want more. Why? The callbacks to previous movies were great, the traps were brilliant, the use of an many of the same actors deserves respect and my goodness .... it was FUN!! Probably helps to have seen the first 3, but for some bloody good fun, you can't go wrong with this.

The Searchers
by GaryI still have chills after watching this again. John Wayne proves (once again), why he is an American icon. Not only does he hold your attention at every possible moment, but that voice and that swagger demand your attention. The scenery deserves a credit, but that goes to the brilliant John Ford. It's well loved and well made, but personally I prefer 'Rio Bravo'. Even if you aren't a fan of westerns, that final shot is truly classic and any true movie fan knows what I mean.
Yep! I'm into the archives.
Movie fans.... please don't miss this classic western.
Personally, I think it should be a prerequisite for Flixter membership....... KIDDING!!!posted 9 days ago -

The Bucket List
by GaryA premise like this should have been depressing, but instead, this tale of two very different cancer patients is possibly the most uplifting thing I've seen in a long time. Jack and Morgan are as great as you would expect, but together they are even more. Yes, it's a bit devisive sometimes, but the comedy and plain old nostalgic smiles are well worth your time and appreciation. Rob Reiner did well not to pound us over the head with narrative and Sean Hayes deserves special mention in a great supporting role. Bring tissues.
Loved it!!!
Two Hollywood Heavyweights, simple story, well made!

Ricochet
by GaryA bit of an underrated action classic, this slightly ridiculous action thriller has all the hallmarks of a big dumb 80's action flick, even though it was made in 1991. The odd silly moment can be forgiven for the tense interplay between Denzel and Lithgow (both looking amazingly young!). John Lithgow obviously has a ball as the psychotic looney tune. Just ignore the manhole sized plot holes and you might enjoy it. It's about as deep as my morning coffee, but it's also equally as satisfying.
Big dumb action for the guys, Denzel stripping off to his boxers in the first 10 minutes for the girls...... Everybody Wins!!!

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
by KatieThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly is the inspirational true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, a successful and charismatic editor-in-chief of FrenchElle, whose fulfilling lifestyle is drastically altered forever when he suffers a stroke, leaving him totally paralyzed save for the use of his right eyelid. He soon discovers through rich memories and vivid imagination that he is able to achieve a life without boundaries. This film is deeply moving, brilliantly showcasing a true masterpiece of literature. Highly recommended.

Meet the Spartans
by GaryOh My God! I feel less intelligent for having seen this steaming pile. Brash, painful and desperately clawing for laughs. Yeah, theres a few chuckles, but they're hard to hear over the sheer mass of groans. The shameless pop-culture box ticking wears thin very quickly and for the most part, it's as painful as the 'Casino Royale' testicle bashing scene (which is also "spoofed"). Where is Leslie Neilsen when you need him? If nothing else, viewers of this movie can feel very talented by comparison to anything on-screen.
This is not a recommendation... it's a public service announcement.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep
by GaryLikeable enough, user friendly family fare. Predictable and safe to show to Grandma. A little too cute for it's own good at times, but for the most part, very entertaining. Emily Watson is great as usual and the New Zealand support cast were fun to pick out for me. The moral seems to be that even the most strange and unique creatures get annoyed when you try to blow them up. Who'da thunk it? Save it for the kids or the adults with a soft spot for cutesy movies.
Not a bad wee family film, but not exactly a great one either.
