| The Hangover - R |
Although my taste may not be too accommodating for dumb comedies, as they are a little fresh and have good characters, I can enjoy them. However I'm not left with a lot to take from movies like 'The Hangover'. If you're someone who needs a bit more than physical comedy or gross-out humour, you're probably going to have to look somewhere else for a good laugh. To be honest, I don't remember much, apart from a couple of awkward chuckles, annoying characters and an obvious but otherwise pointless story. Of course, all fuelled by lazy, dumb, rehashed jokes. I should probably know better, and I knew I was out of touch with the larger audience as when I instinctively cringed or sighed, I was countered with a chorus of laughter. I thought it, then, it was appropriate that the movie ended on a scene directly "sampled" from a better comedy in the same vain, 'Old School'. The fact that no-one seemed to mind reaffirmed that this was a movie made with no concern over originality, tact or class. |

| Lord of War - R |
I must be impervious to a magic redeeming element that people find appealing somewhere in there, because I barely got half-way through Lord of War. It was too exaggerated and cheesy, while the plot was all too predictable to hold my interest. There was no chance I was sitting around to see Nicolas Cage act. I gather there is a message or some insight that is obtained after watching this movie, but at some point I have to care enough to want to know. |

| Ivans XTC. - R |
It's depressing, but probably appropriate, that such a brilliant film is so unheard of. Ivans XTC is a film that features the superficial, greed-driven persona common of today, which happens to have taken the form of a Hollywood agent. The word persona is quite appropriate, as the film's main character, Ivan, displays an elaborate mask to others, yet he is being eaten away and is completely empty inside. It's easy to assume that just the sheer amount of dirt dug up and smeared over America's films industry played the most part in such a limited release (those of you using R1 DVDs will have no luck finding a copy). However, the life of talent agent Jay Moloney, who once represented director/writer Bernard Rose, is the arguably most direct inspiration for film's main character. There are many parallels in the two, but the film is not about defamation. While unflattering, it's completely honest by demonstrating the flaws in a lifestyle, not one particular life. So much so that the Creative Artists Agency, whom previously employed Moloney, went as far as trying to block the film from being shown, for obvious reasons. The film is also largely inspired by the Leo Tolstoy novel, 'The Death of Ivan Illyich'. I don't think any description of the story will do it justice, as it the way in which it presented is bold, true, sad and beautiful. |

| (500) Days of Summer - PG-13 |
'(500) Days of Summer' is hardly as bold and unique as it has been credited. It's a very similar love story, even derivative, with a glossy coat of quirky mannerisms and hip music. Funnily enough, this will probably only help age the film quicker. Where the film does well, however, is the representation of conflict and development in a relationship. Even though it's progress is rather foreseeable thanks to the nature of the characters, the honesty gives the idea some substance. Those looking for the great writing and characters of Woody Allen's classics will feel disappointed, but there is still a lot on offer. |

| Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi) - PG | I feel like an idiot for not being interested in this film because it is anime. It's hard to fault Spirited Away, quite possibly essential viewing. | December 14, 2009 | N/A | |||
| Zombieland - R |
Let me start by saying 'Zombieland' might have been better served as a video game. I definitely feel that there was a pretty good film in the idea, but any hope of one was lost in the process of making a film with the intent of pleasing such a wide audience. 'Zombieland' is basically a cliché-riddled, teen drama story arch, transplanted into a zombie-apocalypse setting, with a hint of black comedy. This is a big ask for Fleischer, although not many have done better. From this, 'Zombieland' is a film with no tension, characters void of any substance and a see-through plot. Importantly, the core of any drama or attachment in the film is about zombies and human relationships, but neither of them are presented particularly well. All that aside, the one-liners, gross-out laughs and gore will manage to hold most viewers through to an innocuous finish. For those who have second thoughts, I'd recommend staying at home and hiring out 'Shaun of the Dead'. |

| V for Vendetta - R |
In a word; Bullshit. I doubt 'V for Vendetta' will win over many new minds. For anyone suspect of politically charged agendas, the film is too heavy-handed and blunt. I'd call myself mid to left-wing, but I found the film naive and self-satisfying. I can easily see how people can take this film a practice in left-wing fantasy masturbation. |
