Finding Nemo - G For a long time, I had "want to see it" flagged next to this film, and have now seen why all the adults and children like it, and it follows the usual clever course set by Disney/Pixar May 27, 2009

Casablanca - PG This has now become one of the critics perennial favourites, I saw it some time ago with friends and still like to quote lines from it (haven't always got them correct, but that's sometimes the way with some classic B&W movies)

Based loosely on "Everybody comes to Rick's" and the screenplay adaptation by the Epstein brothers, was finished after filming had already started... something that has become almost commonplace since.

Humphrey Bogart as perfectly cast in the lead role as the jaded ex-pat who meets up with his long lost flame at Rick's Bar... you all know the plot so I don't need to really explain it. The background story to how the film was made and cast and initially thought of as a propaganda movie (the Director, Michael Curtiz was a Hungarian emigrate and anti-war but because of when the film was made, forced to make changes)

Bogart and Rains were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, and Best Picture of 1943 and best director for Michael Curtiz.

Seasonal tv/classic date movie/weepie* but definitely worth a repeated viewing occasionally.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - PG-13 It's almost a teenage movie that could almost put me off, but the cast appeals, and it's about music so that gets it the thumbs up (plus an optimistic review in the press on their openiong soon preview lists) I have middling expectations of this. Redux review likely. October 22, 2008

Diamonds Are Forever - PG This is when James Bond started getting a bit silly. Tongue in cheek where it just wasn't the right thing to do. Great story, Disappointing execution.

Where the humour works best is the interplay between 007 and M, and Felix Leiter. "I have a friend in the C.I.A. who can fix almost anything"

In the 1960s when the series launched (I dont think even then the producers would've known just how successful it would become) but while there's essentially a brilliant story in here, it gets lost under a lot of the innuendo and slapstick humour - even after the rather grisly pre-title sequence which if you've never seen this film before leaves you wanting to see a lot of action - and if you have, then like me probably wish it would maintain its initial momentum.

Briefly, it sees the return of Blofeld (for those of you who don't know much about 007 please look it up in wiki pages) and a stash of diamonds that leaves a trail of death in its wake.

Sean Connery made a reluctant return to the role after George Lazenby took the part for the film preceeding this one - and it shows. He's sleepwalking the role and it's still essentially an enjoyable romp, but not as strong as it could've been.

The Mist - R It's a very solid movie directed by Frank Darabont and based on a Stephen King short story, now these don't very often get successfully get translated into good films, but the director here has tackled 2 in the past AND made them into very good movies. There are a lot of familiar elements here and if you look carefully can see inspiration from other recent Hollywood fare. This is definitely not for the faint-hearted and (Slight spoiler alert) has a very downbeat ending that worked very well.

A largely familiar (visually at least) but almost not known widely gelled well together and it was a pleasure to watch a well acted film

Underworld - R Basic story: Caught in the middle of a "war" between the vampires and Lycans (lycanthropes aka werewolves) Kate Beckinsale looks wonderful as Selene, a vampire with a fractured history, a very dangerous family suddenly caught up with a big secret (which continues into the second film) and a whole lot of sexy shiny leather and a lot of guns. Seen it, loved it, despite its daft proposition, a lot of visual references are there to be seen (think Trinity for one...) but a story line that could've been a little stronger but still an original take on an otherwise tried formula up to then. Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi) - PG I haven't seen many of Hayao Miyazaki's cartoons, but this is one of the few that I have seen. On DVD on a big screen, where all the love and attention from the artists at "Studio Ghibli" draw each frame by hand in the old Disney tradition, but of more modern yet very Japanese influenced way of doing things.

This is a magical film that, as told from the little girl's point of view (you can read plenty of descriptions of the story elsewhwre) trying to get back to

It is a magic film for all the family. And the documentarys on the special edition DVD are just as enlightening as the film explaining how the story came about and was created.

2010: The Year We Make Contact - PG To understand and appreciate this sequel (one that is otherwise immune from "law of dimishing returns" because its based on really strong source material, and a great director who also wrote the screenplay) Under-rated ofr sure and definately worth a look in. The previous film to this has been considered by many to be one of the best and certainly one of the most influential Sci-fi films of all time, with some rather surprising endorsements, you cant go too badly wrong by following it up with reading the novels. Dedication - R It's one of these rare instances when a film outside my main interests appeals to me. Don't know why (I could end up hating it) but it's worth going out on a limb occasionally, especially when there are no inspiring films out there at the moment...

Redux review likely.

Evil Dead 2 - R Yep, have to agree with all who say this is the best of the three Evil Dead movies, highlighting darkly comic humour mixed with horror in a new and frighteningly funny way, matched recently only by "Shaun of the dead" new directing talent in Sam Raimi. Great film, animation (with a positive nod to the great Ray Harryhausen) slapstick and blood splattered horror. May 18, 2008

Wedding Crashers - R It's a so-so buddy comedy that I didn't miss when it was on in the cinema, and am not too disappointed now that I've seen it on DVD. Great cast including some actors who display a talent for comedy you wouldn't have necessarily thought of, but it works. Some funny moments of pure farce and comedic moments, and Funniest scenes were in the introduction telling you what the two leads Owen Wilson & Vince Vaughn (both comedy capable actors) its the other cast including Jane Seymour and even Christopher Walken that are shining in new areas.
I had "want to see it" flagged for this film, an I've since seen it (taken a while to update here)
