Canterville Ghost
Unrated
Very tame version of Oscar Wilde's short-story - but a good one for family viewing. Patrick Stewart was so good as the ghost here, it's a wonder what he might have been able to do with a bigger budget film; but none the less a favorite old story of mine and not bad for a TV version, also staring Neve Campbell as the 'young gentle girl' to bring peace to that Canterville ghost.
Shoot 'Em Up
R
I loved this ridiculous cartoonish movie! Yes, unbelievable but it was played for fun and I had a lot of it. There are chick flicks and there are dic* flicks - this very much was a dic* flick - but I loved it anyway. Two of my faves here Paul Giamatti and Clive Owen. (and I think they were having fun too) So over-all I have to say? 4 stars - two each for that pair of gorgeous green eyes on Clive - I love that manly man. (sighhhhh)..and in this movie he shows he knows what to do with his...carrot.
Dummy
R
The movie was not "hilarous" as billed here, but it was sweet (all surprising to ME cuz I thought it was a horror picture - not) . Adrian Brody very adorAtorable in this one as an out of work socially akward fellow still living with his stranger than he is parents and sister and works out his angst through "The Dummy".
The Ex
PG-13
Despite the great cast, the script was weak as milk-toast. There were a few laughs but over-all a predictable and dull story.
William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice
R
Well it was fun to see Pacino have a good time here - but overall for me just fair - though truly this not my bag...I watched with a friend who enjoyed much more than I did. Anytime I can look at Jeremy Irons though - I'm happy enough.
Canvas
PG-13
This story of a family dealing with the mental illness of the mom played by Marsha Gay Harden is slow-moving though I will say her performance was very believable and to be noted. The father (Joe Pantaliano) struggles between trying to hold a job and the grief of missing the wife he once had and caring for their son. The son played sweetly by Devon Gearhart is missing the mom he once had as well, struggling with his embarrassment of her and being teased at school because of her and because of his father too, who has taken to building a boat in their front yard to help him deal with his own issues. Struggling with a family member with mental illness is what this is about, but more importantly how to find some hope and happiness & support one another in the midst of it. The film itself is a fair one at best but the intent of the film was noteworthy.

Annie Hall
PG
A sentimental favorite of mine and arguably my favorite Woody Allen movie. I'll move it down a few notches now and then, but every time I've seen it (and I own it) over the last 30 years when it's over I say to myself, "that's my favorite by far". Just a wonderful look at love and relationships.

The Cure
by BrianYou know, when Heath Ledger died everyone made a huge deal (deservedly) out of it. But there wasn't much said about Brad Renfro's death.
I think he was an excellent actor, who, unfortunately, was poorly utilized because of his drug/substance abuse problem.
Thast being said, this is a good film.
Yes, it's a kiddie movie to an extent, but a good one, with a good a worthwhile message that is not sugarcoated. It's dealt with appropriately, and there is no unrealistic happy ending.
The three main actors give exceedingly believeable performances in this heartwarming flick that got the tears rolling. Sciorra is very likeable as well, although almost unrecognizable from the roles she gets nowadays (think her role on The Sopranos).
If you haven;t seen this, try to catch it.Hey, you should really see this!

The Abominable Dr. Phibes
by RobertWatched this recently not having seen it since I was a kid and it is even more amazing then I remember.
Though as a kid "amazing" had more to do with thinking it was kinda creepy and gross.
Now a days this kind of "amazing" has more to do with the massive amounts of CHEESE.
I know many people tend to sort of blow him off as an "over the top ham"...but Vincent Price is such a powerful part of the "television psyche" of my youth that I'm always enthralled with his films. To me, he is like the eccentric uncle that you always enjoy seeing.
This film (while reaching maximum cheese capacity) has influenced many modern day horror films and is worth watching just for side-kick Vulnavia's amazing (ever changing) costumes, the over the top sets and elaborate murder set-ups.
Definately "so bad...it's good" material.Sometimes candy isn't the only thing you need for your Halloween enjoyment...how bout a little cheese?

In Bruges
by SerdarMartin McDonagh writes and directs his first movie and the man has skills for both. This is a very good dark comedy, with great dialogs, good acting and direction. The city is surely one of the lead actors here and a good one. The movie will definitely make you want to see Brugges.
Colin Farrell.. Well, I used to find him irritating, used to think that he got to be an actor because he could make his eyebrows like that. Two clumsy murderer roles (here and in Cassandra's Dream) changed my mind. Still not a big fan but now I can stand him.
"Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like TOTTENHAM." Hilarious!! Well it looks like they are going to hell this year!.Hey, you should really see this!

Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne (Ladies of the Park)
by HenrikA haunting French film noire, which could easily be responsible for coining the phrase femme fatale. Maria Cesares is brilliant portrating the plotting spider who weaves the web around the men she loves and the women she despises to lure them into a fatal liason. The dialogue is very lyrical and the emotions (particulary the ending) ooze with vivid tearjerks, this movie from France after all. This movie is also remarkably raunchy for 46 showing some decent amount of underwear and skin, which makes this movie both a classic and a dare. If you have any affinity with film noir or French cinema at all this movie is highly recommended and it might serve as a good introduction to French Cinema for you if you have not been confronted with it yet.
Go fetch it and tell me what you think of it !
HenrikFrench Cinema Noire at its best. A haunting female lead and solid direction make this a claustrophobic crawl into the dark rifts of the human mind, struggling to find the place between love and hate ! H.

The Hamiltons
by RobertI'm going to be generous here and chalk up all of the problems that I had with this film to "budget restrictions".
I'll follow that up by saying that I think the basic premise here is intersting and while there have been variations of this "theme" over the past several years...I think this film had a (rather) fresh approach to it.
One of the main issues I had is that it felt like they just couldn't decide (character wise) what they were going for here.
At times their approach felt very "tongue in cheek", some parts felt like they were going for "deep, dark and brooding" and at times it felt like they wanted that "torture/horror" feel that seems to be all the rage lately. Each of which can be effective in the horror genre, but are very difficult to do (WELL) all in one film. Had they decided on one or even narrowed it down to two, it may have been better.
Making this even more of a challenge was the acting, which was mediocre and slightly cartoonish at times. And the dialog was often times painfully bad.
As a first/early film for the Butcher Brothers, it's impressive. As a horror film in general...it is simply o.k.Fun (though not great).

Dear Wendy
by HenrikWhat an extraordinary imaginative and well directed movie that was. The story is about a gang of boys, led by the somewhat off-beatish boy Dick who form a gang called the "Dandies", a secret society obsessed with classic marksmanship and honor codes. The movie adressess many issues on a very subtle and beautifully mellow level. The question of gun possession, how modern weaponry and warfare went over the top, especially in the context of youth politics. The movie has the quirkyness and love for its characters like a Wes Anderson movie, but also sports the brooding Post-America atmosphere of Lars von Trier and David Lynch movies. The cast is brilliant, from Pullman to Jamie Bell, so is the 60ies OST. I strongly recommend this movie to my friends here at Flixster, you will be surprised and raising your eyebrows at times but cannot help to be immersed, forced to rethink often and of course entertained by this work of art.

Coffee and Cigarettes
by SerdarJim Jarmush puts his favoritte actors in front of the camera, with a table and some coffee and cigarettes (tea on occasions) and shoots short movies where actors mostly improvised. Now, there is nothing wrong with that!
You get Roberto Benigni blathering away like he did in Down by Law. Tom Waits explaining Iggy Pop why he was late. Steve Coogan wanting to escape from Alfred Molina. Steve Buscemi talking to twins about the King. RZA and GZA running into Bill "fucking" Murray. And my favoritte, Cate Blanchett meeting with her cousin Cate Blanchett, yes two Caties!!
To enjoy this film, you need to like some of these actors, get excited by the cameos,
you need to like the director's style and you need to like cinema. Otherwise, you'll find it boring..Hey, you should really see this!

The Sentinel
by RobertDon't let this impressive cast list fool you...most of them are in very minor roles. Though it is still fun seeing them in their "swinging 70's" mode. Christopher Walken (in a nearly speechless role) as a police detective "side-kick. Beverly D'Angelo as a lesbian/nymphet. Ava Gardner (gorgeous & brilliant) as a real estate agent!
The film itself almost has a "made for 70's tv" feel to it. And suffers at times from some really bad dialog and (sadly) from the poor acting of the lead actress (Cristina Raines) who I was just not impressed with AT ALL. She wasn't even believable as a fashion model! How difficult is that? Just stand there with a blank look on your face and don't eat anything! :P
That said, the film does at times have a nice eerie feel to it and is not without some truly creepy moments.
Turn off all the lights (and any high hopes) and just enjoy it.To get you in the Halloween spirit!

Queen of Blood (Planet of Blood) (Planet of Vampires) (The Green Woman)
by RobertGoes directly to my "So Bad It's Good" list. Like something Ed Wood might have done, had he actually had a budget (and better stock footage).
The story is predictable, the acting is as would be expected (fun seeing young Dennis Hopper & John Saxon).
While there is actually some fun/kitchy set & costume designs here...it seems all of their time and energy was spent on trying to make things seem "futuristic" (it is meant to take place in 1990 after all!) and not enough of story of plot development.
Still, it's kinda fun, though ultimately anti-climactic.Hey, you might enjoy this!

Swing Kids
by ByronA great movie! Excellent performances. Explores the question, Why do people become so filled with hate. A man like Hitler capitalized on the German people's need to feel superior, but he was supported and financed by the upper class who had reached such an excessive level of extravagance. Many people wanted to eliminate outside influence because they thought purely German culture was the only culture worth furthering. There was a dangerous nationalism that said everything had to be for the 'fatherland'. And this movement gained muscle from the youth. Young men who felt inadequate, who felt they were never good enough to earn the love of their fathers started finding purpose in the Nazi propaganda. Young men whose fathers had been snatched away for questionable ideas and acquaintances, who questioned if their fathers loved them less because they let themselves be taken away found a replacement father in the 'fatherland'. Young men who thought they were superior to cripples and Jews and people of other cultures who seemed strange to them discovered power in the praise and things they were given. Who knows what other reasons led to so many people being filled with hate or complacency at this moment in history. Robert Sean Leonard's inner turmoil is vividly portrayed as he comes to fully realize the extent of the Nazi's evil acts and discovers that his father loved him more rather than less by speaking out against the terrible things he saw developing years earlier. Frank Whaley as the consummate artist who is not fit for the Hitler Young and therefore doomed to become a target for their crushing force is touching as well. And Christian Bale as the spoiled rich kid who is always insulting and boisterous yet craving positive feedback is tragic as the one who too easily absorbs the hateful messages and can't see clearly until it is too late. The Swing Heil ending is a little corny, but the music and dancing throughout the movie is great to watch and listen to. Swing music takes on such a symbolic deeper meaning for appreciation of diversity and an outlet for a strong passion and love.

by scottdeniro/pacino, first things firt, seeing these two share the screen for more than one scene, is a joy, deniro clearly showing his age now, has the better role than pacino, but with some nice turns throughout, there a joy to watch, the story is a little diferent for a who done it cop thriller and nicely done, nothing that heat was 13 years previously, but it proves that you can get these fine actors to read a book, and something interesting will come from t

by scotted harris directs this westarn, and a type i enjoy most, taking care of the bad guys, ed harris is a great gunslinger, along with his trusted companion played by viggo mortessan are hired to marshall a town, after years of hastle from jeremy irons and his gang of low lives, they suceed in warning them off, but are always on there toes, and when a young women played by renee zellwegger moves to town, a quiet life may be on the cards for the gunslinger, or could it be both of them she likes, things turn when irons is captured for murder, and justice needs to be served, the legal kind, a western from this year that is very old school in its aproach, takes its time and knows how to tell the story, harris and mortessen are great as old friends, and the usually annoying zellwegger comes off ok, irons also doing his dastardly deeds to great affect, some good moments throughout, action and drama combined, and yet again proof the western isnt dead
