The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989, R)
This film is the best of everything. I love (and have always loved) both of the Bridges brothers..but this was a best of for both. It's a beautiful thing this movie, with a wonderful script and story, great music and shining performances by Beau, Jeff and Michelle Pfeiffer. You will like all 3 of these characters and heart-ache along with each of them, and root for them as well because they are so real. I highly recommend. |

All That Jazz (1979, R)
In the late 70s they might have been watching Saturday Night Fever down town - but UP town "All That Jazz" was what they were standing in line to see. Definitely a 70s film but still bold and risque even by today's standards. Written and directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse - loosely based (or not so loosely)upon his own life. Roy Scheider is just remarkable in this role unlike anything else he has ever done. A favorite of mine then and still today. Trippy and artistically beautiful and just sublime perfection in every way. |

Big Fish (2003, PG-13)
This is an AMAZING movie - and Tim Burton directs at his very best. Albert Finney should have had an Oscar and Tim Burton should have as well. This movie was wrongfully overlooked and virtually un-noticed at the Oscars in 2004 with the exception of the hauntingly beautiful score. The story takes you on many adventures through the story telling of Albert Finney to his son, wife, friends and family and anyone that will listen. It's all about the relationship between the father (Finney) and the son (Billy Crudup) and his quest to know who is father really is before his father dies. Tim Burton fans will know to watch for symbolism and many little truths to be found throughout the film. Great supporting cast as well - Danny DeVito is a HOOT in this. It's one I own and every father and son should watch together. This movie is just BEAUTIFUL. |

Sweet and Lowdown (1999, PG-13)
I am a Woody Allen fan - but I'm also a big Sean Penn fan - I've seen all he's done - and all he's done been good - but this is my favorite role of his thus far. He fully embraces this larger than life character that could have come off cartoonish and made him not only believably real to the audience, but offers great insight to the characters persona. He plays a jazz musician and accordingly the music in this film is a treat in itself. This is a movie I know I'll watch over and over again. NOTE this character was based loosely on the jazz musician Django Rhinehardt |
