I Could Never Be Your Woman - PG-13 I really ejoyed this - mostly Paul Rudd - he is just charming and funny and handsome as can be in this - Michelle Pfeiffer plays the older woman coming to terms with the age difference between them as she works as a writer to keep a popular tv show on the air; all the while raising a 13 year old daughter coming to terms with her own growing pains. Not a perfect film but still an enjoyable one. November 7, 2009

Outsourced - PG-13 Very different and entertaining Rom-Com with a charming and endearing performance by Josh Hamilton in the lead as a manager sent to India where his group was outsourced to, to sell American kitsch items. He falls in love with a young Indian woman there played nicely by Ayesha Dharker. This was fresh and fun as Romantic Comedies go. November 4, 2009

Imagine That - PG This is a good family movie starring Eddie Murphy as a busy dad with his priorities perhaps a litle out of order, and his sweet little girl who has imaginary friends channeled via her "googa" that is her security blanket. When dad tries to take it off of her, he finds out he needs it too; and maybe they just needed each other. November 1, 2009

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - R The last movie directed by the great Sidney Lumet. Two brothers plan to knock off their parents jewlery store and everything goes wrong. Strong performances by Albert Finney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Shown in fragmens as the pieces of this crime and this family's lives and how all went wrong in both are fully brought to light. Youth Without Youth - R Sorry - what should have been interesting is dull as dishwater and one of Mr. Coppala's that I really didn't enjoy. Too sedately presented and it's attempt at fragmented philosophy & theoretical hyposthesis falls flat & frivilous in the end. October 28, 2009

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson - R If you were a fan of Hunter's writing - or you saw Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...this would be the life of the real Hunter (aka Gonzo). Excellent and most entertaining documentary of the man himself, Hunter Thompson. October 28, 2009

Manny & Lo - R Very sweet film about two sisters on the road after their mother dies, one 16 and one 11. When the elder sister finds herself pregnant, they hijack a woman from a store (Mary Kay Place) who they deem to know "what to do". Very good performances by all including a 12 yr old Scarlet Johannson who shows her talent here very early on. October 26, 2009

Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror) (Nosferatu the Vampire) - Unrated From 1922 this silent film though in need of some serious restoration, was still very enjoyable to watch. Greta Schroder is lovely as Nina, Max Schreck as Orlok is creepy and sinister. A must see for silent film buffs. October 25, 2009

Dolly Dearest - R Really really really baddddd...Not that dolly - the movie. Just a really bad Child's Play rip-off. We couldn't even pay attention anymore by the end ....gets my PU rating. (what in the world was Rip Torn doing in this stinker?) October 23, 2009

The Hunchback of Notre Dame - Unrated This 1923 silent film starring Lon Chaney is delightful. For me? He'll always be THE Quasimodo. The film itself could use (and deserves) some restoration, but it was in good enough shape that this could certainly still be enjoyed. October 22, 2009

Away We Go - R Another enjoyable film directed by Sam Mendes. Strong leads with John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph with great chemistry and a supurb supporting cast carries this charming little movie along about a couple in their early 30s expecting their first child, and searching for roots for their child (and theirselves). Subtle and sweetly carried out. October 18, 2009

The Order of Myths - Unrated Very interesting documentary about the orignal (yrs before New Orleans) Mardi Gras in Mobile Alabama..it's "Order" tells of the segregrated two Mardi Gras parades held (one black, one white) and of the secret societies that it is supported by. October 18, 2009

Zombieland - R Totally enjoyed this most fun-filled zombie movie with top notch performances, kick-a** soundtrack and a lovely old moral to the story - right there in Zombieland. Woody Harrelson & Jesse Eisenberg were a perfect match to pull this off just right. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin nicely sum-up the lead roles here. I'd recommend this to most anyone. Nothing Is Private (Towelhead) - R Somber coming of age story of a 13 yr old Arab-American girl who's self-centered mother sends her off to live with her self-absorbed and old country rules father. Her vulnerabilities lends her to being abused sexually by a next door neighobr until another neighbor and her husband come to her defense. October 17, 2009

Palindromes - Unrated Unique approach having a half dozen actresses play the same 13 yr old girl (to demonstrate that the character is representing all 13 yr old girls) who has a seemingly doting but out of touch mother (Ellen Barkin). The young woman gets preganant because she "loves babies" and her mother takes her to get an abortion. She runs away from home and the story moves strangely from there. Perhaps too convaluted to bring it's message but interesting none the less if you like art films. October 15, 2009

Nine Good Teeth - Unrated Director Alex Halpern turns his camera on his 100 yr old grandmother (from 97-100) in this delightful documentary. Everyone should be able to relate to this film about family celebrations, sadness, secrets and most of all the wisdom in the joy of life in all those things that can only come from someone who has lived as long as his "nana Mary" has. Having a 100 year (and going) grandmother in my own life, I appreciate his turning his lens towards the matriach of his famiily..there is always something to be learned. October 12, 2009

La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (The Legend of 1900) - R This was a sweet story, but perhaps not enough story for a full feature film. Nice performances however in this film about a baby boy born and left on a cruise ship who grows up on the ship - never to place his feet on land and plays piano for the ship orchestra. He befriends our narrator of the story who plays the trumpet and meet when he joins the band on the ship. October 12, 2009

Trick 'r Treat - R A fun Halloween treat. Pays homage to horror movies of the 70s blended well with 80s TV horror genre ala Creep Show and Tales of the Crypt. Put it all together and you have this fun little treat for Halloween filled with 4 stories that blend well into one. This is R rated and one of those that means R rated...not for the lil kiddies...but great fun for those of us that are still big kids at heart. Directed and written well by Michael Dougherty. Wicked Little Things - R Story of a young widowed mom and her two daughters who go to live in a house she inherits from her husbands estate in the mountains of PA in an old mining town. This is peculiar in that the ghosts they encounter here (dead children and miners from the old mines) are part ghost and part zombies. Doesn't make sense? No it doesn't. It's a shame because the performances in this are good but the story is weak. October 10, 2009

Monsters vs. Aliens - PG This was great fun with lovable characters and the running theme of being true to yourself and be the best of who you actually are. Good fun and good message for kids of all ages. :D Seth Rogan was the perfect choice in voice for "Bob" the blob. Fun movie. October 10, 2009

Observe and Report - R Despite it's stars Seth Rogan and Ray Liotta, Michael Pena and other noteable cast members, this R Rated Mall Cop was pretty much just that. There were a few luke warm laughs and a few even better almost dramatic and poignant moments, but over all this little comedy (not quite dark - not quite light) never seems sure of itself. This lands at the bottom of my Seth Rogen list of movies to see I'm afraid. Not surprised it went straight to DVD. October 9, 2009

A Stolen Life - Unrated Not one of the better known of Bette's..but I have to say I truly enjoyed her in this. She plays two parts - twin sisters...(one good - one not so good ...natch) but her performance is grand. A very young and handsome Glen Ford is the man torn between the two of them. Great story and totally fun old classic that I had missed up until now. October 8, 2009
