Fight Club - R Two unlikely friends that form a "fight club" to vent male aggression would be putting this far too lightly...to say much more would give away too much. I will say there is more here than meets the eye ...and what meets the eye is excessive violence ..what meets the MIND however, can be discussed for hours. August 20, 2009

Grandma's Boy - R More Raunchy frat-boy humor; but undoubtly funny and good sports played by Doris Roberts (of Everyone Loves Raymond) as Grandma and Shirley Jones and Shirley Knight as the eccentric elder room-mates. A 35 year old man moves in with his grandmother and her friends as he works to develop a new game and maybe finally just grow-up..if not just a little. Adult humor. August 16, 2009

Fidel: The Untold Story - Unrated Surprisingly engaging and eye-opening documentary on the man Fidel Castro. No matter what your views or opinion this documentary has something to offer. Very well done. August 15, 2009

The Kite Runner - PG-13 Sweet and sad story of two young boys growing up in the 70s in Afganastan who become seperated by both the classes and a sad and life changing event in their life; and later when one of them flees the country from the Taliban with his father eventually to live in the U.S. He returns many years later to his war torn neighborhood to fulfill a request of an old friend. Bittersweet and engaging story. August 14, 2009

In Bruges - R Outstanding performances by Colin Farrell, Brendand Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes in this film about two gangsters on the lamb hiding out in Bruges. It's hovers somewhere between a dark comedy and dramady as we see the violence and despair of these men played against the fairytale backdrop of Bruges; especially after their boss Harry (Fiennes) arrives on the scene. The Ape - Unrated From 1940 comes this B movie starring Boris Karloff. Yep - he's a kindly mad scientist but the ending made no sense whats-so-ever. It's kitchy fun & despite the bad...everything; it just goes to show how really good Karloff was - as he was even good in this stinker. August 10, 2009

Peter Pan - Unrated WONderful silent film version of Peter Pan. Has all the charm and delight that you might expect. True to the orginal stage version with star "Betty Bronson" hand chosen by the writer of Peter Pan J.M Barrie himself. This is surprisingly delightful in every way, especially considering it was made 85 yrs ago. I was very impressed, but saddened to know so many have not only seen this but are not aware that it even exists. A must see if you are a lover of this story of Peter Pan. August 9, 2009

The Answer Man (Arlen Faber) - R Jeff Daniels stars in this film about a writer who became jaded along the way and meets a young chiroprator (Lauren Graham) that realigns his back and his heart. The problem with this charming story was the lack of chemistry between Daniels and Graham. The sub-plot about a young man (played excellently by Lou Taylor Pucci) who owns a book store and battling alcoholisim helps to keep this moving where the rom-com element of this does not. Over-all though this was enjoyable. August 8, 2009

The Town That Was - Unrated Documentary on the PA town of Centrailia. This is a town that used to be because of a coal mine fire that burns beneath it and has been since the 60s. 11 people remain as of 2006 when this film was made, despite the fact that all but their homes (now owned by the government) have been torn down. The story mostly revolves around why anyone would stay. I visted with my family in the mid 90s. Back then there were a few more homes than there are now and a white church remained that still had a white picket fence around it; though 40 feet away was a raging fire where the earth split. I have a picture of me holding my son by the back of the shirt as he leaned a little too far over for my comfort to see the burning underearth. It looked like you might imagine hell, and surreal with the church so well kept just feet away. That is gone now; and the film doesn't show the fire as we had seen it as it's not as visable now as it was then - but the ground smokes and the few people remain and that is what the story is about. Two for the Road - Unrated Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn (who are so lovely together) chronicle 12 years of a married couples life from when they first met to their 12 yr, and writer Frederic Raphael uses their various road trips through Europe as a metaphore of their relationship and it's captured well by director Stanley Donen, despite the cutting back and forth in time we are presented with. It's done well and for a purpose of showing some things (and some roads we take) never change underneath it all, despite what is on the surface. August 7, 2009

The Haunting in Connecticut - PG-13 Well it states it's "based on" the true story and that is putting it very very lightly. 90% of this is fiction. It's scary enough but not top drawer (when it could have been) and pulls a lot of old hoaky sound and visual bites to scare. True enough the eldest son had cancer and they moved to a rented house in Connecticut to be near the hospital - that's about it - the rest? Just Hollywood. Rent the docudrama "A" Haunting in Connecticut to get the real story..there is enough frightening about the truth it should not have had to fictionalized quite as much if they had a good writer. Whatever - both films are fair at best but if you want the real story see the docudrama - cheesy but truth with the actual family members interviewed. August 6, 2009

Body of War - Unrated "In no part of the Constitution is more wisdom to be found, than in the clause which confides the question of war or peace to the legislature, and not to the executive department." ~ James Madison The movie opens on that quote and features a young man named Thomas Young who was injured on his 5th day in Iraq. He comes home with a spinal-chord injury. His daily life and struggles there-in caused by the damage the war had done to his body are highlighted to emphasis why this had to happen. I'm going to quote my own favorite movie critic here on this: ""Body of War" again demonstrates that we Americans still have some bitter truths to face. Not only was 9/11 a day that will live in infamy, but our mistakes nearly every day since then have perpetuated and compounded the darkness." ~ Robert Ebert August 6, 2009

The Vampire Bat (Blood Sucker) (Forced to Sin) - PG From 1932 comes this "B" classic Vampire film. Fay Wray (of King Kong fame) plays the detective's love interest in this not so scary yet somewhat still entertaining old movie. August 5, 2009

Starting Out in the Evening - PG-13 Frank Langella gives a marvelous performance here. The movie itself though was fair at best in my opinion with a subpar script in comparison to the talent of it's actors. A nearly forgotten but once beloved writer struggling to finish what is to be his final novel, is confronted by a young grad student who wants to do her thesis on his writings. Though he is hesitant to do so he begrudgingly accepts on her suggestion it might bring interest back to his writing and help him to get his novel published. August 4, 2009
