The Dark Knight The Dark Knight
    4.5 Stars by Ira
There have been very few instances in my life during which I considered a movie to be perfect. The times when I saw 300 and Lord of War are a few of them. I'm happy to say that I'm going to add this day when I saw The Dark Knight to those memorable periods.

When Christopher Nolan went ahead and chose to direct this film along with Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart being cast along side Christian Bale, Micheal Caine, and Gary Oldman; it was like the planets literally aligned themselves to herald this movie's greatness. Honestly, This is how good The Dark Knight was for me.

On one side, this film was visually stunning and showcased impeccable cinemotgraphy, the pacing of the storyline was flawless, the musical score was superb, the special effects were terrific, the script was awesome, the film's entire story was unbelievably good, and the performances of the entire cast were spectacular. But you probably all know this by now. So allow me to mention a few more things about this film that you probably haven't read about.

First off, I applaud Christopher Nolan's unbelievable brilliance in inter-connecting so damn well the stories between Batman, Joker, and Harvey Dent in this film. As you watched, you literally see many stories unfold simultainously right before your eyes that are all equally engaging and poignant. By effectively doing so, Nolan gave this movie such substance, you'll almost forget that you were watching a mere Batman flick due to how deep and complex the storyline of this movie is.

With the mention of this, though Heath Ledger literally steals the entire show with his perfect performance as the Joker, along with Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman's superb acting, I was very surprised that it was the portrayal of Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent that really swept me off my feet. For me, he was the perfect choice to flesh-out the rise of Harvey Dent as The White Knight of Gotham 'till his tragic, yet inevitable fall into his alter ego, Two Face. As this story unfolded onscreen, I couldn't help but get swept up in a maelstrom of emotions for Aaron Eckhart's character. That was how effective and convincing he was.

Not only that, I just loved the way Nolan created this film from a very cerebral perspective, making the viewer think beyond the whole film's super hero premise into such diverse topics as human nature, life, death, and psychology, but with out making it seem pretentious by becoming too analytical.

Yet sadly, I personally think that these are also the very reasons why I can't give The Dark Knight a perfect score.

Even with all of these said, I wasn't exactly as bowled over by The Dark Knight as I initially thought I'd be.

By being too perfect, I was rendered unable to point out anything significant about this film, unlike when I'd rave about my other favorite movies by pointing out a thing or two about them which I really liked. To state it plainly, I can't really say anything great about this film because everything about it was great, thus cancelling-out all of its aspects, making nothing stand out.

Even though, I still consider this movie perfect, despite my one bias.

With this film, Christopher Nolan has taken the super hero genre of movies to a whole new dimension that, I believe, many will be hard-pressed to follow.

I don't want to say to much about it for those of you that haven't had the opportunity to see it yet........I will say this though..........purchase a large soda at the theater just in case you need to take a piss during the film. You aren't going to want to miss a second.

It never ceases to amaze me how a story with an undefined background ultimately destroys any movie.

I was quite surprised to witness how astonishingly great the special effects rendered in this movie was. Though shoddy-looking at the beginning, the CGI in this film thankfully improved twenty minutes into the film, offering the viewer fresh perspectives into the old "super hero" cinematography we've all probably gotten used to. Despite this, it caused me a slight headache watching this movie due to the "shaky" manner the director opted to shoot the whole flick. I'm not exactly sure if he did this to give the film a "real time" feel. If so, it didn't work in my opinion and only served as a nuisance to the viewer.

Anyway, I did like the way the director gave this film a spin on the whole "super hero' trend going on in Hollywood at the moment by turning the whole hero storyline on it's head and focused it, instead, from a totally different perspective such as everyone hating Will Smith's super hero character in the movie and giving him a flawed, vulnerable and secretly suffering, almost human quality on screen.

Despite this, I'll have to admit that this was, by far, Will Smith's worst performance to date. But maybe this what he was exactly trying to achieve since he was portraying a constantly drunk, surly, and morose super hero.

Aside from that, I feel that the storyline of this film had huge lapses in it, such as who the heck are Charlize Theron and Will Smith in this film really, for starters.

Not only that, the entire cast of this film clearly didn't have any chemistry with one another and the script of this film was absolutely dull.
    My opinion about Hancock.

This movie is a perfect example of how an awesome looking trailer misleads potential movie goers into assuming that a movie is going to be great.

To begin with, I'm a huge fan of movies based from graphic novels and I personally believe that the trend of doing so was recently one of the best things that ever happened to the world of movie making. Aside from that, I'm an avid fan of Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy.

Still, this movie was a complete disappointment for me.

After seeing this movie, the best way I could describe it was that it was very messy. Sure, it had all the making of a good action movie such as car chases and showdowns with guns. But it was wrong for the director to assume that just because you incorporate cliche after action flick cliche into a movie will let it pass as a good one. It may get you satisfied visually. But substance of storyline should be prioretized more in my opinion because despite how mind-boggling the stunts and special effects are in an action movie, it will be the storyline that will keep the viewer interested once all the "smoke and mirrors" get boring.

Not only that, the storyline lacked so much in terms of structure and progressed poorly right from the start. The movie leaves you hanging about so many things regarding the background behind it's storyline that it just leaves you unconvinced about everything that's happening as you watch. Lastly, the script was just awful. Hearing the word "fuck" over a hundred times in a movie worked for Scarface, but that doesn't mean that it will work again. By doing so, the lead actors, especially Jolie and McAvoy, seemed like they were posing as mere thugs rather than exuding the needed sinister coolness of an onscreen assassin.

On the otherhand, I like the way the director attempted an experimental technique of executing this film's cinemtography, shooting it in a distinctly diffrent manner from what we normally see in such movies. Still, he should've given it more effort for his attempt, sadly, fell short.

If you like straight-up action movies, than Wanted is right up your alley. But if you're more interested in movies with more substance, then just wait for this movie to hit the DVD shelves instead to save yourself from inevitable disappointment.
    My thoughts about this movie.

Think Star Wars but with Po instead of Luke and great flab instead of the force. This very funny movie boasts beautiful animation, slick action, witty dialogue and a simple but engaging plot. The voice actors are in fine form, in particular Dustin Hoffman and Jack Black. This movie is infused with great ideals and subtle mysticism, and is great fun for both adults and children. Go get some Kung Fooey today!!!
