Ransom (1996, R)
(1996 Director: Ron Hward) NEVER SAW a better kidnapping film! WOw! Robert Patrick as the villain....awesome role!! Mel Gibson very believable in this role as a parent desperate to save the life of his kidnapped daughter being held for ransom. Mom (Rene Russo) is hysterical and torn between believing her husband's instincts and following the cautious instructions given by FBI agents leading the kidnapping investigation. |

Something's Gotta Give (2003, PG-13)
(2003 Director: Nancy Meyers) Perhaps it was the direction that makes this film such a fragile but successful true-to-life picture portrait of the anxiety between the sexes..and ages! The gorgeous Amande Peet plays the daughter of successful broadway playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton). Amanda brings her "date" (Jack Nicholson) up to her mother"s lovely seaside estate for the weekend thinking Mom is away. Cannot believe I forgot to review this movie!! MUST SEE!! Funny tho serious themes....love across the generations. Equally funny Francis McDermond offers a wonderful performance as Erica Barry (Diane Keaton)'s wry, free-spriited & engaging sister!! Of course Keanu Reeves as a young talented doctor is not to be missed!! Great rapport between Nicholson & Keaton..some moments are priceless |

La Vie en Rose (La Mome) (2007, PG-13)
(Feb. 2007 Director: Olivier Dahan) This movie touched me in the old style very very Charlie Chaplain kind of way...not exactly a musical..although rich and demonstrative of the times it is set in.... |

The Red Violin (1999, R)
(1999 Director: Francois Girard) Had been looking forward to this one--and it was not a dissappointment! Story follows the "life" of this red violin created as a masterpiece by Niccolo Brazzolo in 1683! Tragic storyline. This violin survives incredible changes in the times since it was made--Renaissance thru Chairman Mao obtaining power in China! My son already wants to study violin.....a red Stratavaious!? I AM UNSURE WHICH ACTORS' PERFORMANCES I ENJOYED THE MOST! DO RENT/BUY THIS ONE & PLEASE SHARE IT! Samuel L. Jackson is I believe something of his true self in this one! |

Out of Africa (1985, PG)
A toast..."Rose-lipped maidens, light-footed lads." (1985 Direector: Sydney Pollack) Ever tried Kenyan coffee? It is superb--the flavor of an expresso but without the harshness....The new Baroness & Baron Von Blitzen move to Kenya, friends marrying for "convenience" & begin a coffee plantation...a 3-4year cash crop...[Dialogue between the young couple: Baron: "I didn't buy cattle. We are growing to grow coffee." Baroness" "That's not what we planned..." This serious dispute begins a rocky marriage between long-time friends!!] |

Apres Vous (After You) (2003, R)
(June 2005 director Pierre Salvadori) Just saw this- have read NO reviews on it! Apres Vous means "After You!" French movie w/ English subtitles! MUCH FUNNIER THAN PINK PANTHER FOR EXAMPLE!! (Garcon) Antoine stumbles upon a man as he is hanging himself (Louis) Attempts to free him from his demons....over a lost love! Great restaurant scenes! Surprising lots of laughs! Good acting!! IN SPOKEN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES To tell you much more would be to give away the plot...much time is spent in this film in a florist shop!! LOL |

Blood Diamond (2006, R)
(2006 Director: Edward Zwick) This motion picture reaches toward social conscience in this study of the oppressive civil conflicts within parts of Africa and the diamond trade as it is set in the 1990's during the brutal Sierra Leone civil war. Jennifer Connelly portrays a genuinely spirited American journalist, Maddy Bowen, driven to get her story...pursuing Leonard DiCaprio who plays Danny Archer, a S. African mercenary born in S. Africa. Yes this deals with the civil war factions within S. Africa and the terrible toll this is wreaking on family structures as pre-teens are kidnapped and forced to join gangs which recruit more "labor" for the diamond trade. This is another film where Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator, Deep Rising) stole the show as the empassioned father captured into slavery mining for diamonds in Sierra Leone. Hounsou earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor: |

The Cider House Rules (1999, PG-13)
(1999 Director: Lasse Hallstrom) As a fan of Michael Cain, let me say this is one of his finer performances. Seeing it again replayed on TV reminded me just what a lovely portrait of rural America this film is AND why it deserves 5 stars. Dr. Larch (Michael Caine) nightly says tenderly to the children in his orphanage "Good night Princes of * Kings of New England. Charlize Theron co-stars. Her father is a lobsterman & she meets Homer (Toby Maguire) when she visits the institution run by Michael Cain to have an illegal (at that time) abortion of her unplanned fetus. Dr. Larch is Maguire's mentor and father figure since Toby was orphaned at brith because of a slight heart defect. Charlize's boyfriend is an Air Force Lieutenant who volunteered into the USAF. The three become great friends in this small community. |

| 15 |
All The King's Men (2006, PG-13)
(2006 Director: Steve Zaillian) It is possible to say too much about a movie, in that spirit, see this one for Sean Penn's (Best Actor-MILK) passion (borderline megalomania), & Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) portrayinjg a distinguished retired Southern Judge & incredibly cute Jude Law (Closer, The Holiday) who lost his accent & donned a Southern accent for this flick. Penn plays a state senator who rides a longshot into office as Governor--a man who has foresight & vision into what destiny he sees for his home state. Impassioned but never dull..All the King;s Men is a wonderful showcase for these seasoned actors. None of these men were ever better...as good perhaps but never BETTER! Anthony Hopkins? Well, his career has been soo diverse as to have included a role as Paul (Saul of Tarsus) which he brought depth and character to like none other. |

The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996, R)

|
| 17 |
Unfaithful (2002, R)
(2002 Diector: Adrian Lyne) Outstanding performances by Richard Gere and Diane Lane & the awesomely sexy Olivier Martinez. Also the then relatively unknown Michelle Monaghan in a supporting role. Story of a passionate affair that happened quite by accident between the happily married suburban Mom & an intriguing stranger "house sitting" a friend's loft and book store business. Beautifully edited. Sobering tale of lust and passions complicating an otherwise superb life. MUST SEE if only for the passion between each of these characters. |

Tremendous movie! Credits to the director on this one! I could watch Bruce Willis & David Morse in these roles again & again (Hey I think I do actually LOL) Honestly, this one took me by surprise. As Good As It Gets (1997, PG-13)
This movie earns 6 stars out of 5 in my book. Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinner. Introduced me to Greg Kinner who I have not stopped seeing in movies since! turned in a phenominal acting as the gay neighbor who is mugged. Cuba Gooding Jr plays his art agent. HEART- WARMING. MUST SEE. 3 STRANGERS FIND TRUE DEEP FRIENDSHIP IN THE LONELY BIG CITY. |

(April 2006, Director Andy Garcia) Andy Garcia, Dustin Hoffman & Bill Murray right away worth seeing...add Cuba's history to this & you have what movies ought to be!! TREMENDOUS IMPACT! Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran (Monsieur Ibrahim) (2003, R)
2004 R-rated (nonviolent) movie stars Omar Sharif(the "Arab" in this film-Arabe/Mahgreb) has taken up residence & is a merchant in France, a shopkeeper who eventually adopts a young Boy Moses (Pierre Boulanger) age 16. Charming, touching (though tragic) story. Beautiful essence!! [if your standards are extremely conservative, there are parts of this movie you might not appreciate] [adult themes] |

Dune (1984, PG-13)
(1964 Director: David Lynch) How I lLoved reading thiis Frank Herbert SCIENCE FICTION BOOK. 1964 C.A.M.P.Y. low budget B movie is the bomb! I'm loving it! More than half way thru (& trying to complete a semsester of Spanish, Student Intershipsips & endless essays & research & & &...) FUN with a capital F! Whew! Incredibly erotic written by Frank Herbert. There are 5 sequels (books) to the original "Dune" Patrick Stewart is one of his trainers--his comparable martial arts/military weapons coach! You won't recognize him but Kyle MacLachlan plays the young Paul Atriedes (Sex in the City's Charlotte's 1st hubby)!! {"quoting"This Hugo and Nebula Award winner [author Frank Herbert] tells the sweeping tale of a desert planet called Arrakis, the focus of an intricate power struggle in a byzantine interstellar empire. Arrakis is the sole source of Melange, the "spice of spices." Melange is necessary for interstellar travel and grants psychic powers and longevity, so whoever controls it wields great influence. . . The troubles begin when stewardship of Arrakis is transferred by the Emperor from the Harkonnen Noble House to House Atreides. The Harkonnens don't want to give up their privilege, though, and through sabotage and treachery they cast young Duke Paul Atreides out into the planet's harsh environment to die. There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what's rightfully his. Paul Atreides, though, is far more than just a usurped duke. He might be the end product of a very long-term genetic experiment designed to breed a super human; he might be a messiah. His struggle is at the center of a nexus of powerful people and events, and the repercussions will be felt throughout the Imperium. |

My Dinner with Andre (1981, Unrated)
Fasctinating dialogue...between these 2 old friends/colleagues (Wallce Shawn plays a down on his luck writer willing to sit through anything for the possiblity of a great lunch & network contact!)....The one, who had been a director (payed ty an agile if not youthful Andre Gregory) moved me to tears with his across the world search for peace..GRATEFUL to have seen this in my early youth! | 41 |
Modigliani (2004, R)
(May, 2005 Director: Mick Davis) WONDERFUL THOUGH TRAGIC!! Do you love the Renaissance? Art? This is a story of a cubist painter during the time of Picasso! It portrays the alcolism & poverty of those dedicated to their Art. This is a rare performance by Andy Garcia and an impeccable portrait of the life and times of a bygone era. Don't miss this one!! Deals with the real issues of life, poverty, alcoholism...harsh ending...NOT a "chick: flick! |

And all over German born Diane Kruger's youth & beauty (She is simply Angelic in this movie!!) Did I mention the spectacular performance by Brian Cox? Orlando Bloom? Eric Bana?Tender, riveting, historically passionate & performances by the finest actors includining Peter O'Toole and Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity, Long Kiss Goodnight) as Kings...did you know who played Hector? (Eric Bana) the Trojan horse legend (and of course love.....) |

National Treasure (2004, PG)
(Nov. 2004 Director: John Turtletaub) Just saw this...and loved it! Lots of Nicholas Cage high energy & humor charges a racing plot.....themed around the quest for a treasure hunt based on clues in the Declaration of Independence...the plot thickens, shall we say?? Oohhhhh! Thrills, opens with a memorable childhood recollection of Benjamin Gates (Cage) as a youngster spying in the attic & followed by his superb gran-pere (none other than Christopher Plummer)....Even Harvey Keitel's talents are featured as the FBI head agent leading the investigation of Gates alias Woods & did I pay an honorable mention to Cage's wiley father (Jon Voight)?? ........This film also pays its tributes to our historical foun |
|
| 45 |
Casino Royale (2006, PG-13)
(Nov. 2006 Director: Martin Campbell) In a word "ACTION" Set in first Uganda..where this new James Bond catches the scent of a major operative... which leads him to Miami, FL & the unveiling of a new super jet (which it seems is a target of terrorists)..Bond goes off the radar (much to M's chagrin) Wonderfully edited by Stuart Baird, the film showcases the new Daniel Crag as almost a cross between Robert Conrad (Wild Wild West) Russian Uri (Secret Agent Man) & Robert Patrick (Terminator II the liquid terminator)..except Craig is steely eyed....Craig (as Bond) runs without tiring...his first chases he is following an Afrikan who flees Bond litterally bouncing from building to building as if he were Spiderman..or as if he had Flubber shoes!! |
|
| 46 |
Lost In Translation (2003, R)
(Sept. 2003 Director: Sofia Coppola) I LOVED Scarlet Johansen & Bill Murray together!! Dead pan? Have you never spent a week across the country in the madness of a convention? or or been to Toyko? [ I have not..but know those who have) Both Scarlett & Bill are stuck for about 1 week in Toyko, Japan..Bill to make a Japanese Whiskey commercial...Scartlett travelling with her photographer new husband who is rarely available encounters Bill Murray and quickly develops a friendship. There is a kinship between these 2 due to perhaps being displaced in Japan? |
|
| 47 |
The Crow (1994, R)
Though I am a Buddhist and not on a personal vendetta, I think BOTH of the storylines of this movie (the original release and this one!) warranted the "justice" exercised supernaturally in this incredible artsy violence film!!! "It can't rain all the time!" is an (is the word alleghory??)...sort of reflects how life in this drug & crime-filled dark, dark city always feels murky perhaps??? (more to follow in order todojustice to this incredible work!) |

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994, R)
One of my very true favorite movies! It might be sappy except maybe you too have realized (almost too late) who your true love was???
|
| 51 |
The White Countess (2005, PG-13)
Not as good as Casablanca, but good take on life in a foreign land (Shaghai)! Blind official buys his dream night club and aids a lost countess terribly disgraced & down- trodden! Beautiful love story! Like the truth in this story! Great acting, dialogue and Lynn & Vanessa Redgrave as well as Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson... |

The Interpreter (2005, PG-13)
(April 2005 Director: Sydney Pollack) Suspense thriller set in UN and in Africa....Nicole Kidman's leading role? Afrikan interpreter for the United Nations (UN) that gets caught up in a political death threat/intrigue...Sean Penn good role as Federal Agent assigned to protect Nicole....I could relate to her role (as I have to carry or tote along textbooks everywhere.. which is how she gets mixed up in this espionage in the first palce!! She heads back to pick up her books she left in the little stage room while she interprets....) NOT predictable (despite what Yoda says down there)!! OTHERS' REVIEWS: |

Alexander (2004, R)
Collin Farrel depicts the line, "Fortune Favors the Bold," through the eyes & sorrows of a young Prince..trememdous performances from all especially Val Kilmer (Dad King), Angelina Jolie (Mom Queen), Anthony Hopkins as Plato (what more could make this movie complete? What about Peter O'Toole as King & Eric Bana as Loyal Big Brother/Prince Hector with special accolades to Brian Cox as the brother King of the offended King of Troy |

Sin City (2005, R)
(2005 Directors: Robert Rodriguez & Comic Creator: Frank Miller) True to the comic book story. LOVED IT! It helps if you like Bruce Willis and have lived a somewhat real life...Eerie storyline but until midway thru I hardly noticed that becuz I was soo intrigued by the comic booky charaters!! Deals with psychos, stalkers, hookers, and cops in a old style cop movie way (but updated green effects? comic booky almost!) GOOD NEWS!! SEQUELS ARE IN THE WORKS!! The stars really shine on this including: Benecio del Toro Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett (Snow Falling on Cedars), Clive Owen (Closer, Children of Men, King Arthur) |

Heart-rending in parts. Gibson shows what he is made of in this film |

Val Kilmer was only better in Alexander the Great than in this movie!! HOT!! Hmmm film is set in 1898...which is significant because of the train..and I suppose somewhat primitive rifles. KIND OF ON AN AFRICAN-THEMED KICK Omi Pur has a great role and so does Bernard Hil. Well developed plot & I would enjoy seeing M Douglas & Val together again!! Good chemistry in this filml |

The Odd Couple (1968, G)
(1968 Director: Gene Saks) Sadly we lost two great comedians, Jack Lemmon (Some Like it Hot, 12 Angry Men) and Walter Mattheau (Hello Dolly, Dennis the Menace, Hollywood Suite, IQ). these 2 had managed to keep the "balance of nature" they are at such polarities! Was the writing trying to portray Taurus with Libra? or was it Sagitarius with Cancer? Perhaps even Scorpio combined with Gemini? At any rate, hold onto your popcorn!! The mix of these 2 is funnier and more opposite than even Bob Hope and Bing Crosby? Peter Lorrie and Mary Poppins! Steve Martin & John Candy? The Whiz and Dune?! Oprah and Conan! Klingons and Fehringe! Director Gene Saks...round of applause please!!! |

Rain Man (1988, R)
(1988 Director: Barry Levinson) Dustin Hoffman...what talent!!! Yes, he outshined even Tom Cruise. Stealing the stage is a feat oft pulled off by Dustin (Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Doubtfire) A plus for understanding the disabled. A role Hoffman was made for. Cruise plays an initially unconcerned brother with superb superficiality then develops genuine concern for his older "lost" brother who was institutionalized due to the possible harm Hoffman (who has autims) posed to Cruise at home! All this occurs as Cruise's character is all but disinherited except for his wealthy father's prized 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Discovering that $3 million is being held in trust for someone unknown and undisplosed in Ohio. |

(1998 Director: John Carpenter) Total Raw! Bloody! Does not spare the true gore of the vampira! James Wood is superb in fighting against the evil vampire Count. Does it help if you are already a James Wood fan? Sure! LOL Bloody awful blood & guts...but James Woods does add his share of humor to this mildly "B" vamp flick!! Why admist the Vampire "Coven espect to find none other than Carey Hiroyuki- Tagawa himself (Tsunag Soon__Mortal Kombat)! |

Wonderfully light and touching portrayal of the lives of decadence of Austrian Princess Marie Antoinette betrothed to Young Prince Louis! Young Louis XVI took the thrown of France while still in his youth. This movie touched me with its surprising depth in handling the complicated relationships! Rip Torn was amazingly wonderful as the Grandfather patriarch. I love him in every movie I have seen him in!! Tasetfully handles the ultimately sad ending these French supporters of the American Revolution faced! |

The Waterboy (1998, PG-13)
(1998 Director: Frank Coraci)....Hmm...Henry Winkler as the "bad guy" ...a young & sensitive "coming of age" Adam Sanderl...This story has humor(dark hum,or perhaps?) but allows for real feeling!! NOT as hammy as it appears on the survace.. I was BORN IN THE HILLS...and the mom's (Kathy Bates) performance & manipulation by warnings of "the Devil" are reminiscent..... |

Men of Honor (2000, R)
(2000 Director: George Tillman, Jr.) This is a true story of Carl Braesher & perhaps for that reason is in parts hard to watch (endure the racisms) And this film stars some of my favorite actos/actresses, starring Robert DeNiro as a very rough but real Solider & Cuba Gooding, jr. as the son of a poor rural dirt farmer with a wish for a better life for his son.... Navy Deep Sea Recovery (the men in the iron diving suits). The supporing cast is of equally high calibre & includes Charlize Theron as DeNiro's wealthy younger Southern belle who never gives up on him!.....Michael Rappaport & Powers Booth truly moved me in this film. Definitely a worth see... |

Set in post-W W II Germany (1945) in East Berlin in the between the American ruled German sector and the Russian sectors Taut portrayals of a lingering mystery by George Clooney with Beau Bridges as a Commander & Dave Power wodnerfu;l in his military role. FILMED IN BLACK AND WHITE with some actual news reels from the time period. EXCELLENT BELIEVABLE!! ! |

Valerue Perrine is outstanding in this film setting Kurt Vonegut's talent onto the silver screen..,.the charater "Billy Pilgrim" (played by beautiful Nordic Michael Sachs) drifts in and out between times/realities..part sci fi...during War time to the present, past...and the planet Tralfamidor!! Another amazing role for BOTH Robert DeNiro & Samuel L. Jackson...based on the book Rum Punch written by Elmore Leonard. [thank you for identifying this book title, JohnChristie & GaryStev!] I searched on www. goodreads.com & Quentin Tarantino (Director) wrote this screenplay. Bridget Fonda is quite the tease in this flick!! This much I remember about it (when it came out).. I watched an interview (Perhaps David Letterman?) where Quentin Tarantino made this film keeping a long ago made promise to the amazing lead actress, Pam Grier--aka a role for her! |

(2004 Director Robert Lieberman) Simply superb fantasy!..I had to wait paitiently over one week befrore I got to watch this (because of finishing finals this semester)...Oh Wow! AWESOME.. Can I recmmend that you watch it with the Direcotrial comments on?) Did justice (in my opinion) to the Ursula K. LeGuin book Wizard of Earthsea triolgy it is based upon. Danny Glover was wonderful; young Shawn Ashmore (Merry-LOTR) is even more adorable with a scar on this face! Little Lana (Kristin Kreuk-Smallville) makes a lovely priestess..Dreamlike quality that I enjoyed. Personally? I thought Sebastian Roche was hot as the Evil King of the G's. And kudos to the lovely talented Isabella Rosselini! |

(2005 Director: John Madden) Dazzling. Loved it! Nothing quite like the love between a Father and a daughter. .I imagine lead actress Gwynneth Paltrow had a tear in her eye missing her own recently passed away father during the making of this film...Rented this one LAST year but thinking of my own dad iwho is illl presently. My closest oldest friend lost her father at a young age. 10,000 B.C. (2008, PG-13)
This movie surprised me...our neighbor was so impressed he loaned it to us (a rented movie). Passionate well edited and artistic rendition of primitives with some attempt at being true historically, including sabre tooth tigers & woooly mammoths done beautifullly. (1982 Director: Richard Attenborough)Phenomenal true story of pacifist Mohandas K Gandhi. I'd give it 7 stars because of its historical accuracy as well! Long, like 4 hours I seem to remember. Ben Kingsley again! What a versatile actor who brings to life this nobleman with great heart & passion for peace for his country. The story of the family itself is amazing in itself. Gandhi's grandson tours & visited my community college 2 years ago. |

Rating? 6 stars..11 in a scale of 1-10!! I watched this movie again and again. How many awards won? Should have taken them all!! Poetic, truthful, unflinching but considerate portrayal of how not all of us have happy choices in life!! Also adds on the impact of WW II almost destroying this cultural icon of the Geisha!! |

Snow Falling on Cedars (1999, PG-13)
David Guterson's bestselling novel came to the screen in 1999 through Austrailian Director Scott Hicks. Beautiful, artful and sensitive portrayal of love...and what time and war cannot do to stop true love...I would not call this a war movie (WW II in the U.S. American/Japanese during war & post-war era) Rather this touching Australian- madeto order love story is told in flash backs and involves all our senses. Pure, childhood love propels Ishmail Chambers (Ethan Hawke) son of a local independent newspaper/ publisher to unselfishly devotes his aide to the legal criminal defense of the Japanese husband of his Japanese childhood love, Hatsue Imada Miyamoto (Akira Takayama) This innocent defendant (SEE PHOTO BELOW) is beautifully defended by Max Von Sydow who plays an aging but valient defense attorney. |

More American Graffiti (1979, PG)
(August 1979. Director: Bill L. Norton) Love this sequel to American Graffitti (the classic)....I describe it as a rock collage because it puts sisde-by-side events of the time (Vietnam War, picketing, drug uses, violence) with rock music from the same time period! And shows how music DOES reflect the times!! MUST SEE!! |

American Gangster (2007, R)

Peter & Paul (1981, Unrated)
(1981 Director: Robert Day) this is a superior film which I just saw for the first time about 2 weeks ago. Elizabeth (1998, R)
(1998) Wonderful performance by Cate Blanchett & Joseph Fiennes (I did not realize it was him who played her lover Robert until I saw the credits) I felt her pain...joys fears & disbelief at the repeated amazing betrayals she suffered. THIS version of her historical story paid more attention to HOW she became Queen and even made it the theme of the movie, I feel. I have yet to see Judith Dench's portrayal (but anxiously look forward to it as time permits). |

Michael Clayton (2007, R)
(2007 Director: Tony Gilroy) I heard lead actor George Clooney interviewed on I think Conan O'Brien..he suffered some personal inuries in making this one. An interesting note is that his own father was a journalist, something he drew upon for his acting in this one [i THINK it was THIS MOVIE?! HUMMMM.] Personally I do so enjoy the amazing versatility of actor Tom Wilkinson (He plays a manic-depressive attorney who has gone off his medication & risks a $6 billion product liability case.. awesome acting) Hard to describe this movie other than to say, MUST SEEE! or to quote J. Laidlow aka RideroftheStorm's quote of Clayton (Clooney's) character, "I am SHIVA God of Death!" Good ending! [Review: "Full Story: http://www.imdb.com |

The Darjeeling Limited (2007, R)
(2007 Director: Wes Anderson) A TRUE JOY! 3 brothers go on a spiritual quest while on the way to attending their father's funeral...and seeking to visit their long lost Bohemian mother, long absent! Alan Brody, Jason Schwartzmann & Owen Wilson could NOT be 3 more different people who are brothers...travelling together in India at the behest of the eldest brother (Owen Wilson). Offbeat, low key humor with phenomenal cultural interest. Slapsticky!! Almost a cameo appearance by Natalie Portman as the passionate ex-girlfriend....in a hotel scene of the 2 together. |

The Departed (2006, R)
(Oct 2006 Director: Martin Scorsese) The subject is loyalties, corruption, mob life. Scorsese won his Oscar (Best Director) & this one also took Best Picture. Did I miss any other Oscars? Jurassic Park (1993, PG-13)
(1993 Director: Steven Spielberg) DESERVES 7 STARS!! Awesomely original...its release coincided with the real-life news story about the "found fossilized mosquito".....this film has become one of our very very favorite late night films at our house!! LOL My favorite part? Hmmmm....the Chaos theory + the flea circus inspiration of the fatherly Ingine exec whose own grandchildren's lives he risks on this amazing "amusement park" adventure (played by Richard Attenborough the Great!) Then, of course, there is my own personal heart throb, Jeffrey Goldblum (The Fly) himself! M A G I C! EVEN feminism thrown into the mix! Why even our very own Wayne Knight (Newman from Seinfeld) as the genious nephew who feels underappreciated. PLOT EQUALS HITCHCOK'S PSYCHO, in my humble opiinino..... |

Setting 1926 China as Civil War breaks out our crew is caught up in the middle. See it for a tender young Candace Bergen or a tough performance by Richard Crenna, or for the lasting love story of Frenche & Melee. |

The Pianist (2002, R)
(2002 Director: Roman Polanski) Pure art! Loved this as a new slant on World War II films. Alan Brody is remarkable portraying a humble but talented concert pianist evading the gas chamber or confinement in concentration camp thru his contacts & inevitably by dodging bombs in nearly destroyed buildings. |
|
| 186 |
Mercury Rising (1998, R)
(1998 Director: Harold Becker...David Kelley was also an Associate Director on this one) Gripping tale of survival based on the book of the same title written by Ryne Douglas Pearson. Yet another masterful performance by Bruce Willis starring as a rogue FBI agent "blessed" by the chance assignment after a demotion to murder investigative detail with the local city police under his new police boss (Chi McBride-The Terminal, Waiting, Still Waiting, The Kid). Perhaps because of my special education background, my opinion of this film appears to be a bit higher than that given by the Flixster reviewer above & some others here. Miko Hughes is very believable playing an autistic boy age 9. Bruce Willis sensitively handles his assignment, protectively shielding this disabled child who becomes orphaned due to the intervention of the NSA. This likeable child is a savant--he has extraordinary decoding abilities and solves the "unsolvable" Mercury code one of 100 puzzles inside this drug store puzzle book. When young Simon telephones the phone # given for prize-winning decoders to call (in actuality a mysterious NSA department) , all kinds of bells and sirens go off, which is where Alec Baldwin's usual overly dramatic acting works like a charm. It is easy to dislike his strictly "by-the-book" coldness as he delegates the assassination of this child and his parents--in the interest of "national security." |

Monsoon Wedding (2002, R)
(2001 Director: Mira Nair) I enjoyed this look at the custom of arranged marriages still practiced in India. The culture of India stresses the importance of arranged marriages. Learned sometthing more than I knew of the culture of India. There are some surprises in this film. The quality time spent together with the family, the personal stories of the wedding planner & the hope of finding love are a touching addition to this documentary-toned film. |

The Nun's Story (1999, Unrated)
(1959 Director: Fred Zinnemann) Excellent role for Audrey Hepburn who won a BAFTA award for her portrayal of Sister Luke, daughter of a famous surgeon. Sister Luke just shortly prior to the start of World War II travels to Africa and becomes the surgical nurse assisting their Surgeon (Peter Finch-who won a BAFTA Best Actor nomination) whom she meets while assigned to a convent/hospital in the Congo Republic. Sister Luke replaces a nun who contracted tuberculosis. No antibiotics yet (pre WW II) so that nun was forced to return to Belgium, a better climate to improve her chances against TB. During her stay in the Congo, Sister Luke also contracts tuberculosis, but through the support and tenderness of the Congonese and her hospital sheovercomes it. The selfless devotion of those in her Catholic Order are admirable. |

A Beautiful Mind (2001, PG-13)
(2001 Director: Ron Howard) Ron Howard outdoes himself with this film. What a touching portrait of a brilliant mathematician's decline into schizoprenia. John Forbes Nash, Jr. (Russell Crowe) could not have been better cast for the part. His life's love (Jennifer Connelly) stands by this intense and wonderful man who suffers from massive delusions. Must See! |

(2008 Director: Peter Berg) Just picked up Hancock over at local Blockbuster. This one was lighter fare than my usual recent choices! Interesting, very inter- esting storyline...drunken and down on his life Hancock (Will Smith) has superpowers and fights against the "bad guys" in his little neck of the wodds (small time stuff mainly). Public Relations man (Jason Bateman) takes an interest in him...ah...actually Hancock saves him...Hmm..had to review the credits to realize that was Charlize Theron co-starring as PR man (Jason Bateman)'s wife!! Great role for both. |

Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans (2009, R)
(2009 Director: Patrick Tatopoulos) The saga goes back in time. Farenough back to let us see for ourselves the beginnings of the Lycans (human werewolf mix) when Vampire Lord Viktor (Bill Nighy) did not see fit to exterminate the child Lucian (Michael Sheen).. Victor's daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra) grew up alongside Lucian. Utimately she fell in love with Lucian (which is NOT news to those of us who have seen the first Underworld movies). But to watch this story develop was uplifting to a degree, taking into account there was heavy use of CG. Of course, the vampires just kept the Lycans around to work as slaves and protect their castle. |

Doubt (2008, PG-13)
(2008 Director: John Patrick Shanley) Lots & lots of use of foreshadowing in this movie which might actually escape you it is so obvious! Film gets its title from one of the more memorable sermons preached by Padre Flynn (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) The styles of the Principal of St. Nicholas School, Sister Aloysius Beaviiuer (Meryl Streep) is counter to the style of the newish Padre whose sermons are presented complete with some Irish voicing set to a story of Father O'Rourke. |

Grumpy Old Men (1993, PG-13)
In my Top 10 funniest movies (perhaps ever)! (1993 Director: Donald Petrie) The odd couple do it again--now as older set in their ways yet still likable men! Such a pairing, Walter Matteau (Hello Dolly, Hollywood Suite) & Jack Lemmon (The Fortune Cookie) + Ann Margaret (Tommy-The Who) [shhhh don't tell anyone but I always had a secret crush on Mattheau!] |

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008, PG-13)
(2008 Director: David Fincher) Won 2 Academy awards tonight (makeup & best art direction) I want to see it to see the chemistry between Cate Blanchett & Brad Pitt (former girl/boy friends). An "adaptation" of F. Scott Fitzgerald's story....and beautifully written I might add. |
