All That Heaven Allows

It's so difficult to judge movies from past eras, especially ones from the 50's. You have to pretend you're back in that time (even if you never were) and act as if the social boundaries of latter years are things that haven't happened yet. That was really tough to do with this film. But I tried. So with my 1955 glasses on I would say this was a good film overall. Pretty risque dialogue and subject matter. Really good acting. I thought the direction was especially good, with the angles and blocking techniques the director chose. If you're a fan of the classics, check this out.

When I watch films from other decades (especially the 80's) I put myself back in that time. You can't really let the hair and clothing styles of that particular era influence your decision/critique of the film. I say this because 'Heathers' is now an especially dated film since it came out in the late 80's. And it shows. But with all that said, this was still a great film. Very risque plot lines for a mainstream Hollywood film, but it worked! Slater, Ryder, and Doherty were excellent in their respective roles. The plot was very well constructed with it's commentary on social culture including high school way of thinking. Clever dialogue as well. Very well done film. But in need of a remake eventually, but of course it would have to be as good as this original.
