Cloverfield - PG-13 I could excuse the film being derivative if only the characters were in any way likable, or the story more than just bare bones. August 6, 2008

The Dark Knight - PG-13 Should I talk about a story so twisty and nuanced it matches any crime film ever? An entire film's worth of flawless performances, Ledger's being the crown jewel? How about the fact that this film completely blew me away at the end of the second act; it pulls no punches, and follows no rules but its own.
Nolan's films are the Batman movies we deserved all along. Dark, mesmerizing, and utterly brilliant.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) - PG-13 I was a little dissapointed, I was expecting this film to be kick-ass, and it was merely great. Del Toro's direction and creature design are enough to carry ten films, but there's really no crowning moment of awesome. It's also a bit too jokey for the most part, but maybe that's just me. Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron - Unrated A beautifully horrible monster story. Ghosts, vampires, and eldritch gods all face of against the BPRD. (You'd think they'd know better by now!) Creepy, lovingly animated, and originally written, it does Mignola proud. July 14, 2008

Goremet: Zombie Chef from Hell - Unrated This really is a genius level of awful. Ed Woodian soliloquies, asinine effects, moronic writing, horrid humor, and thoroughly off-putting "titillation". It all adds up to the laugh riot no critic without a mental condition is talking about! July 10, 2008

Crimewave - Unrated Yikes, this wasn't very good. Unfunny comedy is just painful, though Bruce Campbell's bit's are excellent. I do give the film props for it's retro-noir style, and the courage it must have taken to try to film a live-action Looney Toons, but the whole thing just falls pretty flat. July 10, 2008

The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! (The Curse of the Full Moon) - PG I've found the worst film ever made! Brown, pointless, and ridiculously talky, the film would be amusingly awful, save for a scene where a live mouse is tortured and killed. Folks, a hundred films like this aren't worth the life of even one disease-spreading vermin. July 10, 2008

Batman Gotham Knight - Unrated I really, really wanted to love this, but I have to be honest, I just don't enjoy anime. (It's the perfect match of affectation, and cookie-cutter traditional conformity.)
Of course the art can't shoulder all the blame, especially with such underwhelming writing. The story fills in the gap between the two films, but all but a couple of segments are pretty weak. (The best being the one where Bruce learns to control pain, the end of which did manage to impress me.)

The Willies - PG-13 I give it extra points for weird. Some bits are pretty cool, but a lot of it is just more gross than scary. July 6, 2008

Pillow of Death - Unrated Hey, kinda' spooky! A good cemetery scene, and an ending I really wasn't counting on. July 5, 2008

Dead Man's Eyes - Unrated For a yacky old suspense movie, is' not bad. July 5, 2008

The Warriors - R This movie gets a little over-thought, but it's still damn well written. Not to mention well acted, beautifully directed, tightly paced... Dear Cthulhu, why don't they make movies like this anymore?! June 28, 2008

Rambo (Rambo IV) - R The moral of the film seems to be that pacifism is childish and makes the world a horrible place. And you know what? I'm finding it hard to disagree.
As far as action goes, it's pretty damn impressive.

Raging Bull - R Sorry, the "best movie of all time" left me cold.
LaMotta's an abusive ass; I can't feel sorry for a bum who created all his own problems. Scorsese's direction just didn't suck me in. I don't want to rate this low, it was well acted, but lets just say, after seeing it I'm still not interested.

The Batman (An Evening with Batman and Robin) - Unrated Wow, dull and racist; there's a winning combo!
The fights are so crummy Batman appears to be fighting his cape more than the villains, and he's often saved not by ingenuity, but dumb luck.

Batman & Mr. Freeze - SubZero - Unrated The computer animation is really distracting, but otherwise this up to snuff with the rest of the animated series. June 27, 2008

Monsters Crash the Pajama Party - Unrated Ya-hoo! Spookshow ads, 8mm homemade horror films, and a main attraction that's actually pretty neat! 10 pounds of cool beans in a 5 pound bag! June 24, 2008
N/A
Blood Feast - Unrated Awful enough to be cult, and grim and bloody enough to disturbing. Unfortunately, those two aspects don't mesh very well.
(It's hard to have some Ed Woodian laughs, when someone's mother is sobbing about the dress she's going to bury her daughter in.)

The Phantom of the Convent (El Fantasma del convento) - Unrated June 18, 2008

Strait-Jacket - Unrated Ah, the Joan Crawford version of method acting; shriek like a peahen in every scene you're in. June 16, 2008

I Saw What You Did - Unrated Rather slow and padded. Nice and all, but Castle's later work lacks the gothic luminescence that made his earlier work so enjoyable. June 16, 2008

Homicidal - Unrated Highly derivative of Psycho, but still fun. June 16, 2008

Army of the dead - G Pity, this movie could have been awesome with a higher fx budget. Instead what we have is a competent if uninteresting story inter cut with really, really bad cgi skeletons. It never gels, in fact it's quite jarring to see human actors, cartoons, human actors, cartoons. June 16, 2008

The Old Dark House - Unrated The only Castle film I utterly loathed. Comedy so unfunny as to be excruciating. Cool Chas Adams titles though. June 16, 2008

Superman III - PG Really overlong, and chock full of depressing "comedy" and nonsensical action. Hell, 'Quest for Peace' is good next to this bucket of brain diarrhea. June 7, 2008
