Fight Club (1999,  R)
Fight Club
Wow, im shocked..i didnt expect this movie to be actually as good as it was claimed to be. Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden delivers a spectacular performance, probably the performance of his career, as a soap manufacturer who is mutitalented..and bored. Durden meets Norton, an insomniac, problematic and severely misguided guy in life and decides to have fun. The story has an interesting and unanticipated twist..which makes it sooooo much better to watch.

The quality of this movie just blows your mind, the amount of details, you just gotta pay attention from the very begining. My favourites are the lines from the movie, somewhat paradoxical yet humorous. This has got to be on of the best movies ever made.I have never been much of a Brad Pitt fan but this movie forces me to see him in a different light.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986,  PG)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
John Hughes is brilliant! Ferris Bueller is the definition of fun. Bueller is an immensely popular boy in school who is everyon's go-to-guy, everyone seems to likes him except his sister. On the day that the movie begins, Ferris is faking a sick performance to get out of school on a particularly fine summers day. Matthew Broderick plays out this role to perfection with his boyish charms. The casting was applaudable, Alan Ruck, Ferris's neurotic best friend, and Mia Saram - the pretty girlfriend, Jeffery Jones- waiting to catch ferris in the act prinicipal help make this movie more easy to slde by.

Ferris: [to the camera, after tricking his parents into believing he's sick] Incredible, one of the worst performances of my career and they never doubted it for a second.
[opens blinds to reveal a beautiful spring day]
Ferris: How can I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?
[begins fiddling with electronics to fake his voice]
Ferris: This is my ninth sick day this semester. It's pretty tough coming up with new illnesses. If I go for ten, I'm probably going to have to barf up a lung, so I better make this one count.

Pulp Fiction (1994,  R)
Pulp Fiction
I really enjoyed watching this movie play itself out. The casting was excellent, the stoty line, the visual and sound effects and the best of all, were the superb lines that were used in this movie. Death isnt an issue, every one feels good about screwing each other over and its perfectly alright. nothing new right? This a really awesome movie, you must buy your own copy cz this is a keeper if you collect classics.
4
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
Violent, stylishly presented and a work of art. The visual artists have truly outdone themselves, after the initial scene that in which most of the filming was done in black and white, the redest of all reds was seen.. the effect captured by that scene alone was one of awe. This is full of blood, gore, nudity and crude humor. It is understandable why the critics have labelled this as a gore fest. Marv, played by Mickey Rourke is out to seek retribution for the death of an 'angel'/ whore that showed him kindness. The monster Marv was played amicably. The strength of the casting was evident by the intense curiousity that persued me throughout the entire movie. Dwight- Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Alexis Bledel, Rosario Dawson, Elijah Woods and Devon Aoki were just brilliant. They brought to life their character with dedicated effort. If you arent familiar with the Frank Miller based comic like me, you are in for a higly unpredictable treat;

Shellie: If you're gonna slug me, just go ahead and get it over with, you sick bastard.
Jack Rafferty: There you go, lying about me again in front of my friends. I have never hit a woman in my life.
[Jackie-Boy hits Shellie in the face]

Strong suggestions of violence, and intent on fully delivering that violence;

Marv: I've been framed for murder and the cops are in on it. But the real enemy, the son of a bitch who killed the angel lying next to me, he's out there somewhere, out of sight, the big missing piece that'll give me the how and the why and a face and a name and a soul to send screaming into hell.

And lastly, crude humor.

Priest: ...ask yourself if that corpse of a slut is worth dying for.
Marv: Worth dying for.
[shoots priest]
Marv: Worth killing for.
[shoots him again]
Marv: Worth going to hell for.
[shoots him again]
Marv: Amen.

Robert Rodriguez has delivered us a truly superb film experience.

American Psycho (2000,  R)
American Psycho
''I have all the characteristics of a human being: blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.''

A sadistic story which reveals the extent to which normality is actually abnormal. Christan Bale has shocked me with his performance, he was just too good. Powerful, calculative and very confident in himself. His strong performance is appreciated immensly as he shoves us into the mind of a psycho who's thirst for blood has been initiated.
6
Rosemary's Baby (1968,  R)
Rosemary's Baby
A 1968 Roman Polanksi work - my newest favorite horror movie.

Rosemary (played by Mia Farrow) and her husband, Guy move into a new building that has some odd rumors about its previous occupants. The seemingly happy couple settle in and are friendly with their neighbour, the Cassevetes and decide its time to start a family. Without giving too much away, a deal is made with the devil and Rosemary is caught in between. The scene where Satan procreates with Rosemary (a euphemism for the brutal rape that takes place) is one of the most nastiest without the use of blood, sharp weapons and torture for its time.

Highly enjoyable, more of a thriller than suspense most of the time though. The best horror film of its time.

Rosemary Woodhouse: You... you had me while I was out?
Guy Woodhouse: It was kinda fun in a necrophile sort of way
7
City of Angels (1998,  PG-13)
City of Angels
This has always been a favourite movie of mine and getting my hands on a personal copy was proving to be a challenge until a good friend of mine gave it to me, anyhoo, back to the movie..

Meg Ryan plays the rols of a MD who relises that there is a higher power, someone or something which controls something way beyond her powers and she begins to doubt her abilities, until she runs into Seth, played by Nicolas Cage, who was an angel watching over one of her patients and falls in love with her dedication to saving her patient.

My favourite part in the movie was when one of the angels asks Seth if he would have done it knowing that this were to happen and Seth replied, i would have had one breath of her ...and blah blah..but this is a really touching and inspiriational movie that i adore and everyone should watch.

American Beauty (1999,  R)
American Beauty
The american dream, the pivotal driving force behind the pretentious consquences of everything that is considered wrong. Kevin Spacey plays Lester Burnham, an unhappy man who is apparently suffering from midlife crisis. His character, is possibly, of most consequence. When he discovers that he hates his job, he quits. When he discovers that his sex life is close to non existent, he makes an effort to buff up. When his wife threatens him with divorce, he calls her bluff.

This movie was magnificent in the truest sense because it delivers truth and uses everyday scenarios to do so. I was much impressed by how the movie started with Lester narrating. During Lesters initial scenes, we are told that Lester will be dead within a year and Lester tells us that, in such a way as though he feels as though he's already dead.

Lester Burnham: Remember those posters that said, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life"? Well, that's true of every day but one - the day you die.

The cinematography is captivating. It was confusing yet intriguing that one must stay absolutely glued to the screen incase they miss something. The script play was brilliant, nothing less.

Lester Burnham: [narrating] I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined my street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday.

My expectations of this being just another unoriginal romantic comedy was unfounded. Sam Mendes has done this beautifullyand almost flawlessly. However, after watching this, am the only one who is left with the impression that America is decadent?

Donnie Darko (2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
This is one seriously messed up movie about an equally messed up kid. Donnie Darko sees an apparently imaginary friend who looks like a rabbit thats just climbed out of its coffin. The story line is kind of confusing but as it progresses, it becomes apparent why it happend the way it did. A definate must see.

300 (2007,  R)
300
Zac Snyder is brilliant! I will say no more.

Dilios: "Remember us." As simple an order as a king can give. "Remember why we died." For he did not wish tribute, nor song, nor monuments nor poems of war and valor. His wish was simple. "Remember us," he said to me. That was his hope, should any free soul come across that place, in all the countless centuries yet to be. May all our voices whisper to you from the ageless stones, "Go tell the Spartans, passerby, that here by Spartan law, we lie."

King Leonidas: [on being told the Persians are coming to parley] Captain, I leave you in charge.

Captain: But, sire...

King Leonidas: Relax, old friend. If they assassinate me, all of Sparta goes to war. Pray they're that stupid. Pray we're that lucky.

[He takes another bite of apple, as the Captain notices a Persian soldier, still alive]

King Leonidas: Besides, there's no reason we can't be civil, is there?

Captain: [stabs the Persian] None, sire.

My verdict: A Masterpiece!

The Matrix (1999,  R)
The Matrix
This is easily one of the best movies i have ever seen. Keanu Reeves was perfect for this role. Thomas Anderson(reeves) lives a double life, his ordinary life and his life as a hacker, Neo. Morpheus recruits Neo into the Matrix and thus, the search for 'The One' is over. I got abit fed up hearing about 'The One' without anyone really explaining what the heck it was supposed to mean but other than that, there was an inarguably strong storyline about Agents vs Matrix.

The effort put into this movie was incredible. the CGI characters, locations, and events, stunts. In the introductory developments of what became the famous Bullet Time sequence, visual effects supervisor John Gaeta and director of photography Bill Pope (I) constructed alot of prototypes to try and create the effects the old fashioned way. Their earlier creations for the camera would be lead around the action at a tremendous speed, but after many failed tests they opted for computer graphics, which meant writing an entirely new program for the effect. Worth the time and effort. Casting was great.

Neo walks through a metal detector in the lobby and is approached by a security guard after it goes off]
Security guard: Could you please remove any metallic items you may be carrying, keys, loose change...
[Neo opens his trench coat to reveal dozens of guns underneath]
Security guard: Holy shit!
[Neo knocks the guard down and shoots the other guards]

Chocolat (2000,  PG-13)
Chocolat
A beautifully crafted story with Juliette Binoche pulling off her character as a young, single mother being guided under the spirit of her own mother to make a century old chocolate recipe. I enjoyed this movie, another one of those classics that i will forever watch over and over again..
13
Twilight (2008,  PG-13)
Twilight
For all those not familiar with the works of Stephanie Meyer, this movie does not disapoint her work. I am most impressed with the casting of this movie. The most essential component was how the actors embraced their characters and made it their own. Robert Pattison, although i was abit apprehensive about him, proved to deliver duly. A demon, attracts his prey Bella, played by Kirsten Stewart. I cannot tell you how talented she is in this movie. The casting of the rest of the folk, the Cullen family and the Blacks made the movie even more magical. Makeup and special effects, the scenery, the background was carefully chosen and did not dissapoint as anticipated by me.

First half of the movie moves tentively foward, leaving the viewer in doubt whether if its going to continue the same tune but when the baseball match begins, the story immediately rises with the action. I absolutely loved this movie. The camera work could have been improved. The stunts were carelessly done, very messy but could have been easily improved. Does justice to the actual story. A collectors item.

Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys) (1995,  R)
Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
What a mindblowing performance by Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. If you enjoy movies about messing around with time and mind boggling confusing sequence of events, you will like this movie.

Jeffrey Goines: When I was institutionalized, my brain was studied exhaustively by the guys of mental health. I was interrogated, I was x-rayed, I was examined *thoroughly*.
[turns head and coughs]
Jeffrey Goines: Then, they took everything about me and put it into a computer where they created this model of my mind. Yes! Using that model they managed to generate every thought I could possibly have in the next, say, 10 years. Which they then filtered through a probability matrix of some kind to - to determine everything I was gonna do in that period. So you see, she knew I was gonna lead the Army of the Twelve Monkeys into the pages of history before it ever even occurred to me. She knows everything I'm ever gonna do before I know it myself. How's that?

I think this movie is different from all the other rest of time-travel/sci-fi genre movies is that Bruce Willis's character copes with the psychological effects of time-travel, without knowing what is reality from fiction and past. The moment that the time-traveler comes from or goes to is the million dollar question in mind.

Terry Gilliam is brilliant!

Misery (1990,  R)
Misery
Misery is one of my favorite Stephen King Thrillers. Its dark and calculating and chalk full of horror. Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is a writer who has a car accident. He is helped by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) a mysterious stranger. In his latest novel, Sheldon killed Annie's favorite character, making her a little angry, feisty even. She traps him in her home and makes him bring the character back to life in his next novel. Annie is Paul's self-proclaimed number one fan. Specifically, she is obsessed with the Misery Chastain series, Paul's major claim to fame. Caan and Bates deliver their roles marvelously, so it was no suprise when Bates won Best Actress Oscar for her role. This film brings a new definition to conceit.

You will either love or hate this movie depending on how morbid your sense of humor is. I must say, best film of its kind since Hitchcock's Psycho.

Annie Wilkes: Here's your pills.
Paul Sheldon: Annie? Annie, what is it?
Annie Wilkes: The rain. Sometimes it gives me the blues. When you first came here, I only loved the writer part of Paul Sheldon. Now I know I love the rest of him, too. I know you don't love me, don't say you do. You're beautiful, brilliant, a famous man of the world and I'm... not a movie star type. You'll never know the fear of losing someone like you if you're someone like me.
Paul Sheldon: Why would you lose me?
Annie Wilkes: Book's almost finished, your legs are getting better. Soon you'll be wanting to leave.
Paul Sheldon: Why would I leave? I like it here.
Annie Wilkes: That's very kind of you, but I'll bet it's not all together true.
[pulls out a gun]
Annie Wilkes: I have this gun.
[pulls the trigger]
Annie Wilkes: Sometimes I think about using it. I'd better go now. I might put bullets in it.

Akira (1988,  R)
Akira
Kaneda: Come on... don't they say the only foolish questions are unasked ones?

Akira is a manga series by Katsuhiro Otomo and was the highest-budget anime film ever produced of the time. The story of Akira takes place in the year 2038 in Neo-Tokyo, which was built over the ruins left from where a nuclear bomb impacted during World War III. The significant characters are Kaneda and Tetsuo. Kaneda, a leader of a motorcyle gang, and his best friend is Tetsuo. Brilliant and captivating to watch when considered from every aspect.

Anime becomes an even more respected media with the release of Akira. Next on my must see list is Ghost in the Shell.

Kaneda: What's wrong? Have some trouble?
Tetsuo: Yeah. But I already took care of it. And you're too late, you missed the show.
Kaneda: Tetsuo, you had me worried again. I figured you'd be standing here sobbing like a little baby.
Tetsuo: Kaneda, you've always been a pain in the ass, y'know. You've been telling me what to do since we were kids. You always treat me like a kid. You always show up and start bossing me around, and don't you deny it!
Kaneda: And now you're a boss, too... of this pile of rubble.
Tetsuo: KANEDA!
Kaneda: That's Mr. Kaneda to you, punk!
Tetsuo: DIE!

To Kill A Mockingbird (1962,  Unrated)
To Kill A Mockingbird
Based on the novel by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird is about the defense of a man accused of a crime. By now, you all know how much i enjoy a story that is told in the form of a narration, and this was from the perspective of a child. Extra credit for that. Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch deserved his Oscar for his moving performace in this. This story is an accurate portrayal of childhood innocence, racism and the extents of moral tolerance that exist in a society. From the little that i am aware of about american history, the period that this film is from, the audience watching in the 1960's were extremely familiar with racial prejudice but rarely had it been displayed when a white man treated an African American with equality and respect and had an unbiased view to delivering justice. The cinematography is excellent. This movie was an amazingly good adaption of the book, and it a well made film. Strongly recommended to all.

Atticus Finch: I remember when my daddy gave me that gun. He told me that I should never point it at anything in the house; and that he'd rather I'd shoot at tin cans in the backyard. But he said that sooner or later he supposed the temptation to go after birds would be too much, and that I could shoot all the blue jays I wanted - if I could hit 'em; but to remember it was a sin to kill a mockingbird.
Jem: Why?
Atticus Finch: Well, I reckon because mockingbirds don't do anything but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat people's gardens, don't nest in the corncrib, they don't do one thing but just sing their hearts out for us

Oliver Twist (2005,  PG-13)
Oliver Twist
I have always respected the work of Roman Polanski. My beef with this version is that certain parts from the book that i considered were important was left out. Other than that, its a brilliant book to film adaptation. Set in 19th century london, this is about a young boy's adventures, in the realist sense. I was impressed with how entertaining i found this film. Ofcourse, Polanski is magic. A strong recommendation.

Workhouse Boy: [Woken by boy pacing back an forth] Tom, give it a rest will ya? We're trying to sleep.
Hungry Boy: Can't sleep. Too hungry.
Workhouse Boy: We're all hungry.
Hungry Boy: Yeah, but I'm scared.
Workhouse Boy: Scared? Of What?
Hungry Boy: I'm so hungry I'm scared I might eat the boy that sleeps next to me

The Boondock Saints (1999,  R)
The Boondock Saints
Interesting concept they have adopted, wouldnt you agree? Ultimate gangster movie yet.

Connor: Now you will receive us.
Murphy: We do not ask for your poor, or your hungry.
Connor: We do not want your tired and sick.
Murphy: It is your corrupt we claim.
Connor: It is your evil that will be sought by us.
Murphy: With every breath we shall hunt them down.
Connor: Each day, we will spill their blood till it rains down from the skies.
Murphy: Do not kill, do not rape, do not steal, these are principles which every man of every faith can embrace.
Connor: These are not polite suggestions, these are codes of behavior and those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost.
Murphy: There are varying degrees of evil, we urge you lesser forms of filth not to push the bounds and cross over, into true corruption, into our domain.
Connor: For if you do, one day you will look behind you and you will see we three. And on that day, you will reap it.
Murphy: And we will send you to whatever god you wish.
[Murphy and Conner join II Duce behind Yakavetta]
Connor, Murphy, Il Duce: And shepherds we shall be, for Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be.
Il Duce: In nomine Patri.
Connor: Et Fili.
Murphy: Spiritus Sancti.

Constantine (2005,  R)
Constantine
This movie immediately went into my 'all time favourite movie' list inside my head. There is a certain thrill about watching movies that deal with death and its involvement of some higher power, such as hell or even heaven. The fact that keanu reeves is a really cool actor adds more flavor to the plot. Exorcism..ahh, what to believe..what not to believe..where exactly does science come in in all of this? who knows..but the action is pretty good.
