Moon - R A thinking man's science fiction/drama that has turned out to be the best film I've seen this year. I could go through the usual list of 'this is great, that was terrific' but I won't since every single thing in this film is just freakin perfect. I even enjoyed Kevin Spacey and THATs saying something. October 24, 2009

Blood: The Last Vampire - R Great cinematography, dazzling choreography and absolutely nothing else. An embarrassing live action version of another Japanese anime plagued by cringe-worthy dialogue, acting and CG.
Especially the CG.

How to Be a Serial Killer - R Labeled as a a black comedy it falls flat on its face. It's not funny or gory or even very interesting. Dameon Clarke helps pass the time with a strong, likeable performance and I have a feeling his name will start popping up more often but that still doesn't make it worth sitting through.
I kinda felt like I was watching a cross between Dexter and The Office so maybe fans of those would it enjoy it and would explain why I didn't since I can't stand either show.

The Gray Man - R Unlike the trend of real serial killer movies (ie BTK, Ed Gein, Gacy, et al) this one is not only a mature, serious work it is also surprisingly (and thankfully) restrained in its approach to the material since Albert Fish was a child molester/cannibal.
But understand this is not a horror movie or a thriller; it's more of a psychological drama about the last few years of this sick individual and the cop who is determined to arrest him.

Surveillance - R An offbeat thriller that is well-made but not really all that thrilling or surprising. In fact I'm still not sure if the "twist" was really supposed to be a twist since if you pay any attention it all but smacks you in the face by the halfway mark.
Anyway it features a great cast all around and is surprisingly funny-- although most of it is of a darker variety.

Drag Me to Hell - PG-13 Some great gross-out moments and humorous at times but otherwise overhyped.
And the "unrated, directors cut"? A whopping 9 seconds longer.

Children of the Corn - Unrated While it is more true to Stephen King's original story this film proves that that isn't necessarily a good thing since our heroes are a bickering, unlikeable couple and the ending is a downer.
Still I give it props for trying to use elements from both the original film and King's story; plus as a surprising bonus the main theme from the original film returns too.

Trick 'r Treat - R I think this is gonna be one of those films that I will come to love and appreciate more over the years because while it wasn't terrible it wasn't the knock-your-socks-off experience I was expecting either. Fellow Flixster Beefy said it best, "oh Hype Monster, thou has thwarted me again."
Solid casting (especially master thespian Brian Cox), amazing cinematography and lush set design are the highlights here. Oh and let's not forget the creepy yet loveable Sam.

Terra (Battle For Terra) - PG Both the animation and dialogue are rather lackluster but I give this sci-fi film props for showing a little more realistic depiction of war (for a kids film anway) and the significance of self-sacrifice. October 11, 2009

Earth (Disneynature's Earth) (Planet Earth) - G In it's defense the TV series this was culled from is entertaining and informative but cut down into 90 mintues makes for a vague, confusing documentary. October 11, 2009

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies - PG-13 October 11, 2009

9 - PG-13 Imaginative, post-apocalyptic, steam-punkish survival tale with a spiritual backbone. Great, detailed CG, solid voice work and an uncomplicated plot make it an instant favorite. October 11, 2009

Children of the Corn 4: The Gathering - Unrated October 10, 2009

The Hills Run Red - R An impressive and likeable newgen slasher marred slightly by an unimpressive ending. This doesnt ruin the overall enjoyment fortunately but it does lose half a star. I also enjoyed the little in-jokes scattered throughout the film like the fact that there is already a Western called The Hills Run Red and the sly poke at torture-porn movies.
Overall it's sure to please the indiscriminate slice-and-dice-em crowd.

Offspring - Unrated Issue #1: Offspring is a sequel to author Jack Ketchum's Off Season. Why the sequel first? Rights issues you say? Too friggin bad then wait on that situation to get cleared up before you just say oh well and make the follow-up first.
Issue #2: It's shot on what looks like digital and digital is fine for your home videos but when a movie is shot this way it gives it a look of pure amateurism.
Issue #3: Speaking of amateurism the acting is absolutely atrocious (other than Art Hindle).
Issue #4: The "score" is nothing more than a poor, annoying recreation of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The only things that are passable are the screenplay (written by Ketchum himself) and the gore. Everything else is way under sub par and make even The Lost seem pretty good.

Gwai wik (Re-cycle) - R Bizarre and nightmarish fantasy from the Pang Bros. with a none too subtle stance on abortion. Expertly handled and executed with some wild FX work. October 5, 2009

Antikörper (Antibodies) - Unrated After seeing Pandorum I decided to give Alvart's previous film a try.
As it turns out I'm glad I did because Antibodies is a damn fine psychological thriller with a bit of Silence of the Lambs thrown in. Nice twists and an unexpected ending.
On the down side: It feels every bit of its 127 minute running time and the CGd deer look like crap.

Les Rivières pourpres II - Les anges de l'apocalypse (Crimson Rivers 2: Angels of the Apocalypse) - R The cinematography is once again well done and Jean Reno is once again pitch perfect in his role but there's not a whole lot going on in this rather uninspired sequel.
The absence of Vincent Cassel doesn't help either.
