Pandorum - R The first 30 minutes is claustrophobic and quite tense but after that it starts to tread into familiar territory and loses its edge. Not bad by any means but I could've waited till video. September 27, 2009

Chi sei? (Beyond the Door) (The Devil Within Her) (Who Are You?) (Beyond Obsession) - R Excruciatingly slow Italian knock-off of The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby with underwhelming results. September 23, 2009

Grace - R Hardly as disturbing as everyone makes it out to be unless you consider the grandmother subplot which had several scenes making me squirm uncomfortably in my seat.
The film breaks down into three parts: the set-up and introduction to "the problem" (this part moves along well enough); then there's the figuring out and coming to terms with "the problem" (which eats up way too much of its running time as the audience is way, way ahead of the mother); then the resolution--if the majority of the film had been as suspenseful and bloody as this part we'd have a winner.
As it stands its a slow curiosity piece that is ultimately forgettable except for the final "shock" at the end that had me rolling on the floor.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto - R Sporadically funny, violent, and raunchy animated film; most Rob Zombie fans will probably enjoy it but everyone else...not so much.

Honestly if it weren't for Zombie's name attached to this I probably wouldnt have bothered since it looked like just another Adult Swim-style wannabe. After watching it it appears to be more of a Ralph Bakshi-style wannabe with alot of little nods to various iconic horror films.

Shuttle - R An exciting, well-paced thriller that loses all my respect due to a dumb-ass ending. September 20, 2009

Crank 2: High Voltage - R Loud and crude with seizure-inducing visuals. I like dumb movies but this is actually too dumb for even me which is too bad because I thought the first was a mostly entertaining ride. September 18, 2009

Space Truckers - PG-13 It's dopey with hammy acting and so-so FX but there's just something about this that makes it alot of fun.
Perhaps its because its directed by Stuart Gordon who really shows his Full Moon roots (back when they used to know how to make good low-budget, fun movies) or maybe its because of alot of the familiar faces: Dennis Hopper. Stephen (Blade) Dorff, Charles (Alien3) Dance and Vernon (Commando) Wells to name a few.
Or maybe it's just because its a dopey, hammy movie that knows how to have fun. Anyway, I enjoyed it.

The Soloist - PG-13 It's not horrible but there's just really nothing here worth noting. I really can't think of anything positive to say about it. September 15, 2009

Deathtrap - PG Not as great as I remembered it but I think that's due to the fact this is about crazy plot twists that came back to me while watching it. Still its a well made thriller/comedy with a great (gay) performance from Reeve, a delightfully unhinged Caine and superb direction and camera work from Lumet...even if it was full screen. Pirates - PG Quirky, uneven comedy that coming from Polanski I expected a little bit more out of. Now I understand why it doesn't have a legitimite release on DVD. September 13, 2009

Red - R A pretty standard revenge drama although Brian Cox's genuinely sympathetic character as well as his outstanding performance set this one apart. September 9, 2009

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 Never been a fan of Schreiber but thought he did really well; love Reyonds but he was wasted as was Monaghan.
I had alot of issues with this movie namely the annoying inconsistencies but ultimately it was an ok time waster.

I Love You, Man - R Not as funny as I was expecting but still entertaining overall due to a great cast playing very likeable characters. September 7, 2009

Hardbodies - R Its been many a year since I last saw this T & A romp and apparently I saw it alot more than I realized because not only could I quote the movie here and there I actually found myself singing the theme song.
Its the epitome of 80's sleeze in a purely fun way.
There were even a few surprises this time 'round:
Kane Hodder plays a small role called 'Older Geek' and he was a stunt coordinator.
Kathleen Kinmont plays a hot, hot skater.
And the song Party Time mostly known from Return of the Living Dead is in the film twice.

The Last Horror Film (Fanatic) (Fanatical Extreme) - R Spinell is creepy as usual but the film lacks any kind of suspense or narrative cohesion and Caroline Munro still can't act (although she's quite lovely to look at).
So in other words don't bother.

Isolation - Unrated Good old-fashioned monster film from Ireland (with nods to Alien and The Thing) about man's continued meddeling with mother nature--this time cows and wind up with a genetic mutation that looks like something out of the imaginaton of HP Lovecraft as it has no discernable shape or symmetry. No CG, decent amounts of gory stuff, competent cast and a brief running time make it a welcome addition to the monster mayhem genre. August 26, 2009

Wait Until Dark - Unrated For a 1960's film it not only works well it is actually still suspenseful.
Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin turn out some wonderful performances, Richard Crenna makes for a likeable bad guy and the plot unfolds at a nice pace. A highly recommended top notch old school thriller.

Messengers 2: The Scarecrow - R "The Shining goes country." SCREEM MAGAZINE
Quite possibly the most accurate blurb ever.

Supposely a prequel but completely goes against what The Messengers explains happens to the Rollins family.
Instead this more than likely was an unused script Sony owned and since it involved a barn and a farmer they adapted it as a 'Messengers' film.
Needless to say, it sucked. A slow, boring mess that never goes anywhere, borrows heavily from the aforementioned Shining and doesn't satisfy on any level. Well except a nicely gratuitous bare breasted scene. But other than that--zipola.
