Kingdom of Heaven Kingdom of Heaven R
At this point, it can be said that Ridley Scott has found his calling. I don't just mean film making; I mean making historical epics. His choice of time period and style are a combination that can make you weep at the beauty of it. This is a superb film. Most parts are played very well. I wasn't really sold on Bloom's performance. Edward Norton and Ghassan Massoud deserve all the hype they've received. Neeson and especially Green were underrated, as a good deal of their scenes were cut for the theatrical version; thankfully, a Director's Cut DVD has been released with the scenes restored. They only serve to make a great movie even better. The production and cinematography is out of this world, as per usual in Ridley's films. The soundtrack is enough to soothe the most savage soul. The absolute best part, in my opinion, was the portrayal of both sides (Muslim and Christian) as less than perfect but far from demons. Some expected historical inaccuracies cost this film a perfect score, but that is the ONLY reason.
The Right Stuff The Right Stuff PG
The Right Stuff is a splendid film that gives an entertaining and generally informative view of the birth of NASA: the Mercury Program and the first American astronauts who spearheaded it. The cast combination is a superb one; everyone portrays their historical role well. I was particularly impressed with Scott Glenn and Sam Shepard. The special effects and attention to detail were surprisingly good for an early 80's flick; quite believable. As a history buff, I would have liked to have seen greater attention payed to the technical aspects of the Mercury Program. Emphasis was placed instead on character interaction & development. Along these lines, I felt that the ending was slightly underdone and anticlimactic. Despite this, The Right Stuff truly does break barriers.

A Bridge Too Far A Bridge Too Far PG
Attenborough's epic telling of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery's great fiasco, Operation: Market-Garden. This film is simply bursting with well-known -- and some not-so-well-known -- screen talent. Combine that with the best action of the pre-Saving Private Ryan era and the story itself (which needed to be told) and Germans that speak German and you get what you get: one of the best late-century WWII epics of international cinema... ever.
Alien Alien R
A milestone in contemporary science-fiction. A (rare) masterful blend of science-fiction and horror. Considered as one of the origin films of the body horror subgenre. A masterpiece in every conceivable way.
