The Prestige
PG-13
A tremendously amazing movie. My expectations were high but shattered quickly by the fantasism of this movie. It seems to start off slow, but momentum quickly builds; the pace quickens with each scene, answering questions while only creating more in a complicated and engaging plot; more mystery ensues. The two young neophyte magicians share a bleak past, and now compete to best the other in a heated rivalry which can only end with turmoil. Obsession overtakes their lives, and they must discover secrets of the other to forge their destinies and attempt to revenge their pasts with the defeat one another; this obsession leads both down a darkened path while producing more elaborate tricks and methods of delivery: a darkened path leading to their impending demise. To say I was impressed would be a falsification, for this movie was absolutely brilliant. The cast profound, featuring the suave and sophisticated gentlemen Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, and the always cute and delightful Scarlett Johansson. Michael Caine also played a terrific part as the wise, aged magician and mentor. The cast was as diverse as the characters, which builds on the already excellent plot. To truly - literally - experience magic in a motion picture, one must not overlook The Prestige.
