What to know about me? I am 20.I love music and movies.Cinema is a comparatively young passion of mine, but I try to catch up on watching as many good movies as I can.
(always grateful for recommendations) I am always open for senseless discussions, funny talks and philosophic musing, but I am primarily here for the movies and for talking to people with about the same taste. So, a good MCT match or a list of favourite movies would be favourable, you know? |

Ben X
by SerdarNic Balthazar directs his first movie adapted from his own novel. The story is familiar but interesting and the acting is very good. The original aspect of this movie is its cinematography. The director manages to pull us into the world he puts his character to, in a mixture of reality and the fantasy. Ben is a troubled young boy who is picked on all the time..He plays an online video game and identifies with the character he creates there. But real life is bitter and real people are so cruel.. Can Ben put up with this or should he end the game? Can his parents and the girl he meets on the game help him to go on?

El Topo
by HugoEL TOPO (1970)
directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky
starring Alejandro Jodorowsky, Jacqueline Luis, Robert JohnAlejandro Jodorowsky is like Sergio Leone on acid, or maybe something else, I couldnt tell, I never did drugs. El Topo is the cult classic spaghetti western about, well, something. Its very, very strange, extremely violent and filled with sexual references that sometimes made me think the film was about sexual fetishism. El Topo is actually quite a complex film if you take time to think about. Its more than just a cowboy movie, its might actually be a metaphor about Western civilization with all that violence, sex, racism and blind faith.A man, lets call him El Topo, cause he doesnt have a name, goes on a mistical journey to discover himself and overcome his overly violent nature. After coming close to death, he is saved by deformed people who come to see him as a God-like figure for many years, until he is «born again» and decides to go out and save them, by digging a tunnel, cause they are stuck inside a mountain.
It is slow-paced, but there are some impressive images and despite being confusing and never giving any explanations, El Topo is quite an enjoyable film. Its surreal and weird, sometimes philosophical, almost pretentious and exploitive, but for the sake of its message. I cant really tell what my apprecition of El Topo is, and if I dug deeper I would probably come up with a better understanding of the film, but its definately worth it, cause its different, and shows an overlooked filmmaker's talent. Twisted, to say the least.
A twisted and surreal film from the 70's. One of the «midnight movies». Could be hard to enjoy for some, but definately worth it.
That being said, Im moving to a new appartment and wont have the Internet until the end of August. So to all of you, I hope you have a nice summer, I'll keep writing reviews and will post them in 2 months. See you all soon ...posted 25 days ago -

A Room for Romeo Brass
by NykThis is a really good little film, apart from Paddy's accent which i couldnt quite place. The theme of a couple of young boys idolising a stranger who helps them in a fight always seems like one destined for a messy end. It is a messy end, plenty of violence, bullying and general nastiness, but delivered beautifully.
Watched this today - you should watch it too!

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
by SerdarWow, what a great piece of cinema! Kim Ki-duk is, with no doubt, one of the most creative auteurs of today and this may be his best film so far. He uses very little dialogs in his films but manages to show us very well-developed characters. This movie is wonderfully written and beautifully shot.
Slow paced story takes place in a deserted tample on a lake. An old monk lives there with a young boy and teaches him the disciplines to be a monk. When a young girl comes to the temple to seek cure for her sickness, the young boy discovers his desire for the opposite sex. At that point, the old monk says the key sentence of the movie: "Lust awakens the desire to possess. And that awakens the intent to murder."
The use of symbolism is quite intense in this film but you don't have to be the master of Budism to catch on as the story is simply universal. Unless you are one of the knights that say Ni to slow paced films with very little dialogs, check out this modest masterpiece..Hey, you should really see this!

Sex and the City: The Movie
by Luciana"We were perfectly happy before we decided to live happily ever after."
Hey, you should really see this!

Cronos
by HugoCRONOS (1993)
directed by Guillermo Del Toro
starring Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio BrookIn the 16th century, a device was build and was supposed to provide immortality to whoever uses it. Four hundred years later, the alchemist who had it with him disseapeared but before he hid it in a sculpture. That sculpture found its way to an antique store where an old man living with his wife and grand-daughter finds the little object, the cronos device. He slowly discovers the power of the object when he realizes someone else is looking for it.Cronos is an original and interesting take on vampirism. Its about immortality and its consequences but it begins as a film about addction.
This is Guillermo Del Toro's directorial debut, and already he showed his talent and potential. Mixing horror themes with drama always keeping his characters in sight. Like Peter Jackson he has a flair for grotesque elements but keeping them from becoming laughable. He knows how to build an atmosphere thats for sure and this film looks surprisingly good for a small-budget picture.
The first half of the film is definately more interesting with the main character discovering the consequences of using the cronos device. He feels young and becomes thirsty for blood but he cant explain it. The second half is more conventional with a confrontation with the film's villain, but still interesting in its own way.
Federico Luppi gives a nice performance as the old man and Ron Perlman is always fun to watch in whatever role he plays. Again there is a child witnessing the events that occur in the film and as it is always the case with Del Toro, the kid isnt afraid of the mystery but rather intrigued. Cronos is a cool flick, it looks dark but there are some comedic moments, as it is always the case with Del Toro. Not bad.
Early Del Toro. Its worth it.
