The Covenant - PG-13 Fun popcorn flick - really hot guys. Plot's ok - nothing truly memorable, but it at least has some sense of internal consistancy which is a lot more than you can say for some of these kinds of movies :D Oh, yeah, it also has some really neat visual effects, especially during the fight scenes. Center Stage - PG-13 Not high art, and very cliched, "Center Stage" is still a fun bit of fluff, and the dance sequence at the end - while virtually impossible to actually pull off live, is still stunning and fun to watch July 2, 2008

Velvet Goldmine - R I absolutely love this movie. It's an interesting story - though you have to pay attention at least the first time in order to follow along - it not only jumps from place-to-place, but also in time.

The basic conceit is that a reporter (Bale) is trying doing a "where are they now" story on rock star Bryan Slade (Rhys-Myers) who reached the top during the heady days of Glam, only to see his career was ruined when he faked his own death. We follow the reporter as he interviews people who knew Slade, and as each interviewee tells his or her story, the movie shows it to us as a flashback. Director Todd Haynes has said that much of the set-up is an homage to Citizen Kane, with some shots set up to reflect shots from Kane directly.

The acting is solid - Rhys-Myers, Bale and Ewan McGregor (playing Curt Wilde - allegedly based on Iggy Pop and/or Lou Reed, but especially near the end, seemingly channeled from Kurt Cobain) and the songs written for the movie fit right in with songs that were actually a product of the Glam era. McGregor's performance of the Stooges classic "Gimme Danger" is amazing - I've been known to rewatch that scene 5 or 6 times before finishing up the movie :)

This isn't a movie to watch, though, if you're uncomfortable with sexually frank movies. There's plenty here to go around - hetero, bi and homosexuality are all addressed, and McGregor provides a full-frontal nude shot during one of his character's concert performances. This is, however, reflective of the times being portrayed, and, well, dammit, the guys are pretty hot, you know? :D

It's a bit of a strange little flick in some ways, but very nicely done and quite enjoyable. Check it out.

I Am Legend - PG-13 I lost interest in seeing this one after learning just how drastically the story was changed from how it was written in Richard Matheson's original novel. While it's not uncommon for a story to be changed from the novel to how it's told in a movie, in this case, the changes are so drastic (especially at the end,) that it basically turns the whole thing on it's head, sending a message almost entirely the opposite of what Matheson had written the story to convey, and even makes the title pretty much meaningless (at least in terms of the reasaons why Matheson gave the story that particular name.) If they wanted to make a story THAT different in meaning, they should have just come up with their own story. June 23, 2008

The Silence of the Lambs - R Well done, less-cliche-than-usual serial killer flick with Oscar level performances, tight writing, genuine thrills and some honest-to-goodness horror. What's not to love? They should have stopped after this one, though. Red Dragon, Hannibal and *especially* Hannibal Rising are bad enough that in some ways, they can detract from the enjoyment of the original. If you want to see the story from "Red Dragon" done properly, watch Michael Mann's 1986 "Manhunter" with William Gibson and Brian Cox, instead - it's so much better than "Red Dragon" even though they're both from the same book. The Mummy Returns - PG-13 I usually hate when movie sequels add a kid, but this one's actually not too annoying. It's a bit convoluted and off the mark when it gets into reincarnation and suddenly-appearing tattoos (plus it leaves open questions of why a lot of this didn't come up the first time around) but it's fun, the action sequences are good and Brendan Fraser is so good at this kind of character that he manages to carry the movie through the weak spots. Rachel Weisz commits to her character which also makes the implausibilities less annoying. Good for one of those times when you just want something fun and doesn't require you to think much. The Princess Diaries - G I really enjoyed this movie a lot. It's no great work of art, but is fun, has a good message and gets it's laughs honestly (rather than by just being gross or gimmicky) June 23, 2008
