2012 2012 PG-13
I normally talk about how with movies like this, we should set our critical minds aside and just judge it based on whether it was entertaining or not. Well, this movie certainly was. But I think if you judge it solely with that criteria in mind, you'll miss how truly impressive this film really is. You've seen disaster movies before...some more epic than others. But gosh, as far as scope goes, this film is just about the BIGGEST of them all. It makes every other disaster movie look like child's play.

I seriously think that, after this movie, the disaster genre is over. There's really no way that another movie can match this as far as visual amazement, pure excitement, and just flat out size. Director Roland Emmerich (director of my favorite disaster movie, "Independence Day") takes this world and freaking tears it to shreds, and in the process, gives the audience everthing it wants. This unapologetically big-budget Hollywood popcorn muncher has some of the most exciting action sequences I've seen in a long time. That car/plane esape from L.A. scene might be the most fantastic since the dinosaur vs. King Kong fight in the latest King Kong film. And what I like about these action scenes is that the camera pulls back and lets the viewer take it all in, unlike the Transformers films and others like it.

2012 isn't going to win any Oscars that aren't technical-related. But if there is a movie that nails a genre right on the head, it's this one. Bottom line: it's a blast. Maybe the one thing that would have put me over the top is if they went into space at the end. Then I might have just exploded in my seat. This is the last, and maybe the only, disaster movie you ever need to see.
Star Trek Star Trek PG-13
I'm not a "Trekkie." I've never actually seen a full episode of the beloved show (although I did have a Star Trek lunchbox in pre-school. It was pretty tight.) But I have to say, this movie really rocked my socks off. The quirks and relationships between all the interesting classic characters, and the intricate but well-told storyline really makes me respect the Star Trek franchise, and what it brought to American culture. I could only imagine a true Trekkie watching this movie...it's probably more exciting than sexy time. I'm looking forward to the next installment with great eagerness. Until then..."live long and prosper!"

Stand by Me Stand by Me R
Definitely my favorite movie of all time. Watching it has a significant place in my childhood memory. It's more than a coming-of-age tale; it's a timeless, simple, and emotional masterpiece, and the most accurate portrayal of friendship I've ever seen in any piece of art.
Saving Private Ryan Saving Private Ryan R
Best war movie ever made...easily.
