Cashback - R Most of this movie is dreamlike with moderately montage-style scenes that had me enthralled. The lead, Ben, has the ability to slow time to a standstill but uses it in an unexpected day. As an artist Ben is lost in his own world and so out of touch with reality that the other people in this movie feel like oddities in their own right. There were also funny slapstick bits with the employees at the store along with deep romantic slant. I was completely charmed by this movie and it's definitely one of my favorite new-to-me flicks I've seen this year. If you liked Primer, this movie is right down your alley. August 20, 2009

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 - PG-13 The girls are back in this so-so sequel about friendship and the sisterhood. The pants take a backseat to the contrived drama between the girls and their failure to be there for one another. This seems to be a needless sequel, even though I was prepared to say otherwise. The actresses are charming and the dialogue not too sappy but the core synergy between the girls that was there in the first movie was absent from this one. This film's okay to have in the background but probably a little dull if you pay too much attention. June 7, 2009

Primer - PG-13 The plotting for this film is like an interesting cat's cradle of storylines. There none of the flashy bells and whistles of a big budget time-travel flick, but the trippy, smart writing kept things interesting. The main characters, Aaron and Abe, seem above average and trustworthy guys who want to do more with their lives. Because of the setup, I really got behind the characters without realizing it until the subterfuge and time-traveling set in. When the different subplots really got going, all I could do was hang on and hoped I didn't get lost! Loved the overall affect of the film, but of course, time-travel movies are my film candy.

After a once-through I still want to go back and re-watch this one just to put together more of the puzzle. This is not light watching so be prepared to actually invest yourself in this one and to still have some questions in the end that can only be answered by watching the movie again more closely. Similar Movie Recommendation: Time Crimes (Los cronocrímenes)

Crank 2: High Voltage - R Like the first Crank, Chev Chelios is stuck in another outrageous situation after another while trying to stay alive and give the Triads a run for their money. The crazy hand-held camera work, quick cuts, and intermittent crazy inserts (i.e. a Godzilla-like fight sequence with exaggerated prosthetics) only make sense because this is Crank. This movie is a guaranteed hit with anyone who is a fan of Die Hard and Lethal Weapon if those two movies were put in a blender with a little speed. The hysteria, cameos, and fun quips make this a good watch even the second time around. There was a lot more flavor and color with the different interpretations of how Chelios sees the world in the first Crank, but this sequel definitely holds its own. May 24, 2009

Angels & Demons - PG-13 The frantic pace of the plot really cost this film dearly in terms of leaving the audience in the dust. Tom Hanks is likable enough but watching him pause, solve a clue, rinse, and repeat got old fast. The puzzles in this Dan Brown adaptations were far from multifaceted, as they were in The Da Vinci Code, and I could have done without the horribly cheesy red herring looks on every main character. The movie is beautiful shot and the bookend opening titles and end titles were nice, but overall this movie left me unimpressed. If the Illuminate hit man would have had more of a role and justification, then I would've been more behind the church versus science debate. Right now, the so-called battle was more of a farce than anything else. Although, Ewan McGreggor really delivered with his Pope-In-Training role. Only the laurels of The Da Vinci Code made me see this movie in theatres when I should have just waited until DVD. May 24, 2009

Star Trek - PG-13 This installment of the Trek franchise is full of excitement right from the opening scene. The whole Trek universe has been rewritten during this temporally tweaked reimagining of how The Original Series characters met and their first adventure together. There could not have been a better Spock than Zachary Quinto, although the amazing job he does on Heroes as Syler made me take a while to get used to him in the Spock role. The young Kirk also takes some getting used to, but he grew on me towards the end of the movie. Thank goodness the Kirk actor decided not to incorporate any Shatner-esque speech! Any scifi or action movie fan will find it easy to dive into this accessible, exciting Trek film. Plus, all the quips are aces for Trek fans and general audiences alike! May 24, 2009

X-Men Origins - Wolverine - PG-13 Thank goodness Jackman was there to carry the film. The dramatic rewrite of Wolverine's origin worked for the movie, if only to be able to graft it into the continuity of the other X-Men films. I don't think Cyclops or Emma Frost should have been involved with this film, and although Gambit wasn't original to the Weapon X storyline, it was fun to see him on screen. Schreiber was a welcomed edition, and he does "menacing" well. Will.i.am and Managhan's characters were pretty throwaway in order to introduce Deadpool. Plus, Will.i.am was a poor casting choice.

This was definitely a better installment for the X-Men movie franchise than X-Men: The Last Stand, but if you're a discerning fan remember to leave your nitpicking at the door. Then just prepare for a good, somewhat well-written popcorn flick.

X-Men: The Last Stand - PG-13 This is truly a movie for the fans. There are just too many inside nods and gags and only fans would get an extra kick out of, although the whole movie would be entertaining for the casual fan of only the X-Men movies. They absolutely skimmed the surface with every character, relationship, and subplot, but I guess that was to be expected. There should have been more meat on these bones as far as character development and such, but that didn't stop me from somewhat enjoying watching the X-Men in action. May 3, 2009

The Forbidden Kingdom - PG-13 The action sequences were pretty fun and the special effects were polished but don't decide to see this one based on the stirring, life-changing genius plot. This movie is your most basic Mary-Sue plotline geared toward young American martial arts enthusiasts. Plus, Jackie Chan and Jet Li draw in the older crowd. One of my favorite characters was the Monkey King. His mannerisms and expressions, which also made it into his uniquely choreographed fighting style, were classic. This is a good, unsubstantial popcorn flick with production value but nothing beyond that. April 12, 2009

Escape to Witch Mountain - G Escape to Witch Mountain continues to be one of my favorite classic Disney movies right up there with Pete's Dragon, albeit on a little more realistic level. Yes, there's special effects and a villain in pursuit but at the core of this film is the strength of the family bond and the meaning of family itself. Eddie Albert, who plays a crotchety old man who's lost his way, is a real treat in this movie. As he begins to come around, the audience starts to come around too. The original version doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the modern retelling but is just as enjoyable on a completely different level. April 3, 2009

Los Cronocrímenes (Timecrimes) - R Different from any other time-travel movie I've seen, Timecrimes was definitely creepy and almost chilling. In the beginning the lead, Hector, is already atypical but when he starts seeing strange things in the forest, THAT'S where things start going down the rabbit hole. The rest of the movie goes deeper than I would've liked into the strange circumstances Hector has thrown himself into by being just a bit too curious for his own good. As a harsher than normal time-travel movie, I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for an escapist good time because Timecriminals grabs you by the scruff and doesn't let you go. March 21, 2009

Twilight - PG-13 This is such a fail whale of a movie. No chemistry between the leads, and horribly tacky musical montages that are just painful. The few interesting bits like Edward's family are squashed in favor of painfully dragging these characters into needless sequels. March 21, 2009
