Michael Clayton - R Prepare yourself for an intense and moody corporate lawyer mystery. I wasn't entirely sure I understood details as they were happening, but I appreciated that this movie didn't hand me everything on a silver platter. I -like- figuring things out on my own, and have something to discuss about the movie afterwards. Tilda Swinton was a scary cold broad in this movie, and Tom Wilkinson's character breathed some life into a storyline filled with execs with deadened souls. August 4, 2008

Labyrinth - PG This movie is a Jim Henson classic. The songs have a retro, catchy flair to them, the overall story holds up over time. Big sister blues and the teenage angst of wanting to just get away from everyday mundane frustrations is something that's relateable no matter the era. This movie initiated me at a young age to David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly (I wanted to be her when I grew up!), and furthered my already great love for Jim Henson's work. July 26, 2008

The Ugly Dachshund - Unrated I saw this by chance originally on late night Disney over ten years ago and I immediately fell in love with the humor and French farce of it all! Every time I've seen Dean Jones in an old Disney movie, he hasn't disappointed. July 26, 2008

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (The X Files 2) - PG-13 This was a decent venture back to the days of Scully and Mulder sans aliens. I would classify this one as a thriller with a season one or season two flavor. The novelty of seeing Scully and Mulder on screen together didn't carry the film like I originally thought; their storylines were more separate than I would've liked. This movie tried to develop both characters separately and I'm not sure if it succeeded. Aside from the dynamic duo, Billy Connolly was a treat to watch as always. I have to see that this movie felt more like a fan-fiction six years too late than anything else, but it was fun to breakaway from the blockbuster action-filled movie events of the summer for a little something more subdued for once. The Dark Knight - PG-13 This installment of the Batman franchise lived up to the high bar set by Batman Begins. This film felt complete and gave me closure, even though there's ample room in the storyline to continue July 21, 2008

Mamma Mia! - PG-13 This was Meryl Streep's movie through and through! The girl rocked it like she'd never rocked it before and really showed off her dancing-singing chops. It was a treat to see the three male leads (Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgard) not prance around the screen and surrender than man cards even though they're in a musical. They were solid in their performances, even though Pierce Brosnan looked a little pained during a few of his numbers. Wait through the end credits! There's an awesome singing and dancing extravaganza from the main cast! July 19, 2008

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Hellboy 2) - PG-13 This installment of the Hellboy series was definitely bigger than the last movie but not necessarily better. The effects and the comedy were raised a notch for this one, but those didn't take away from the characters or the story. I'm not a fan of the set-up for Prince Nuada and Princess Nuala's fairy race, but once things jumped to the present day the movie finally got interesting. I could've done without kiddie Hellboy, and the hint about Hellboy's ultimate fate because the movies may not even progress that far. Abe Sapien's mannerisms seemed a little less fishy, but that's really just a nitpick. Plus, the Hellboy-Selma Blair relationship was cuter than I thought it would be. Overall this movie had some amazing set pieces, exciting hand-to-hand combat sequences, and I would totally see it again! July 12, 2008

Tombstone - R This movie has the feel of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, with its gritty shots and dusty, western sets. There is always something happened behind the eyes of Kurt Russell's Wyatt Earp, and throughout the movie he's constantly torn between what's right, what's wrong, and what he wants. Val Kilmer was also a real treat as Doc Holiday, always playing it cool and laid back until everyone's guard was down. Plus, the pistol-whipping never got old! Thankfully, this movie found a happy medium between classic western and emotional character portraits. July 6, 2008

Bobby - R The multiple storylines made this a movie that could've easily lost its focus, but believably conveyed the spirit of how Robert Kennedy touched so many lives. All the actors in this one were captivating, and even Lindsay Lohan gave a respectable performance. I liked how the huge gamut of age ranges covered by the cast was used to show what the Senator meant to so many people, young and old. July 6, 2008

Hancock - PG-13 This turned out to be a fun summer movie with a little respectable character development and unexpected depth. There were some little hooks and running gags that I could have done without, but the rest of the movie had enough interesting story bits that weren't in the trailer to keep my interest. Charlize Theron's character had a more involved role than I originally thought, but I'm glad that the story didn't wander into unnecessary back story, no matter how interesting. Hey, and the child actor wasn't annoying; huge plus! July 6, 2008

WALL-E - G There is so much heart in this movie; I was cheering for WALL-E all the way! Even though there is no dialogue for most of the film, I wouldn't have it any other way. so much emotion and intent is told through gestures, expressions, and movement that dialogue throughhout the whole movie would have just taken away from Pixar has created such a loveable, persevereing underdog in WALL-E that this movie shot straight to the top of my Best Pixar Movies list. I am totally going to buy this one first thing when hits DVD. I only hope that I have a BluRay player by then so I reap the benefits of high-def. June 29, 2008

Wanted - R While based on a series of comics, I would've never guessed because this movie banked on the action-packed scenes and hot stars! The history behind the league of assasin called The Fraternity was more meat than I expected on these bones, and James Mcavoy rocked his role of disgruntled cube jockey who wanted something more. Sure, there were a few CGI moments that lind of took me out of the moment, but for the most part because of the backstory, it all work itself out. Nothing was extravagently needless. All in all, this was a fun film and I'd see it again on DVD. June 29, 2008

Get Smart - PG-13 This movie had just the right amount of unobtrusive gags that showed a lot of 23 and 99's rivalry while setting up the rest of the story. The original show was a lot of shtick and missions, but the movie really distills all that into a man character you can care about despite al the doofy things he does. Plus, Alan Arkin was amazing! The guy really played up the dry humor, which is usually missing fromthis kind of movie, and had a lot of fun action scenes. Aside from a few other movies like Juno and In Bruges, Get Smart is one of the funniest, full of heart comedies this year. June 22, 2008

The Onion Movie - Unrated This one hardly has a central story to follow, but all the sketches run into each other well enough. There's nothing sacred in this movie when it comes to "delivering the news", but I wouldn't have it any other way. The Steven Seagal cameos were unexpected and as funny as the fake trailers from Grindhouse! Don't expect a cohesive plot, or all the sketches to be gut-busting funny, and the movie's pretty enjoyable. Definitely a pic mostly geared for Onion fans. June 15, 2008

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - PG This installment of the Narnia series is slightly geared toward an older audience. The childlike wonderment and magic of Narnia has gone, leaving a terribly chaotic and cruel reality. The children don't necessarily have Aslan or a lot of the Narnians to help them, which make them as powerless as Prince Caspian. Watching everyone come together to try and take back Caspian's kingdom is all that more captivating because it doesn't really look that they're sure to win. The background of how the Telmarines arrived in Narnia hundreds of years ago and came into power was interesting; they seemed to have corrupted Narnia the way most ambitious humans would. All in all, this was a movie for an older audience but still a respectable follow-up to the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. June 15, 2008

3:10 to Yuma - R Never having seen the original, this gritty remake about egos and the human push to survive at all costs just about blew me away. The synergy between Christian Bale and Russell Crowe is an attention-grabber every time both actors have a scene together. The ongoing tension kept me watching, waiting, and dreading the final showdown that I knew was coming. The rancher's son was also an interesting twist to this story; his admiration for the outlaw just adds to the tension and the probability that he may help the outlaw escape against his father's wishes. I would watch this movie again and again. June 15, 2008

The Happening - R As a "what if" tale of the effect human kind has had on the environment, this movie was all right. As a terrifying thriller, this movie had no legs to stand on. I feel like Shyamalan had this very green agenda on his mind and didn't know how to tell it through interesting, emotional, cohesive dialogue. A big, destructive event happens and gobs of people die mysteriously, which is a great premise but honestly I got more chills and felt more terror from Dakota Fanning, Tom Cruise, and all the extras in War of the Worlds. Yes, I was more scared by a movie about invading aliens piloting blood-sucking machines terrorizing humanity than The Happening, which in theory should have been even more chilling. There are few things scarier than the very planet we live on turning against us, but somehow Shyamalan's latest has managed to fall short. June 13, 2008
