Burn After Reading
by JensAfter the dead serious "No Country for Old Men" the Coen brothers return to lighter material, without entirely giving up their love for grotesque humor and sudden violence, think "Fargo". The soundtrack also remains serious, hinting at a political thriller. But in the end it's a bizarre comedy. Their biggest assets in this film are a script that starts out slow but soon becomes entirely unpredictable and more exciting every minute and a great cast of big names delivering wonderful performances for their ridiculously stupid and obnoxious characters. The end sums it up so well, all is said and done, yet nothing solved, some but not everyone got what they deserved and a few didn't even make it there. To watch the path leading there is a lot of fun, though.
Hey, you should really see this if you enjoy the Coen brothers' work or other bizarre comedies.

Bond Girls are Forever
by B.Well of course it's not a question. It's a fact, "Bond girls are Forever!" I told my friend after I saw this documentary hosted and narrarated by my All -Time favorite Bond girl Maryam d'Abo (She's like buttaaa) This Documentary not only talks about the obvious Bond girls being sexy, clever and brave but explores how Bond women have evolved from the 60"s to 2006's Casino Royale. The changes of Bond women over the years and women in society is a mutual and beneficial relationship that works like two mirrors bouncing information to each other that has lasted nearly 45 years. Even the word Bond Girl seemed politically incorrect as mentioned in the documentary "Bond Women" was more acceptable to today's standards, but ironically enough the Bond women prefer to be called "Girls" stating that it just sounds sexier. This not only entertains you but educates you, it reminds you that art imitates life, or at least brings a good argument. "Bond Girls are Forever" can be seen on the second disc of the Casino Royale special edition DVD. Only for the true Bond fan in you, or Bond girl.
A great Documentary for the fans of the JAMES BOND films.

Righteous Kill
by scottdeniro/pacino, first things firt, seeing these two share the screen for more than one scene, is a joy, deniro clearly showing his age now, has the better role than pacino, but with some nice turns throughout, there a joy to watch, the story is a little diferent for a who done it cop thriller and nicely done, nothing that heat was 13 years previously, but it proves that you can get these fine actors to read a book, and something interesting will come from t
who wouldent want to see deniro/pacino

Appaloosa
by scotted harris directs this westarn, and a type i enjoy most, taking care of the bad guys, ed harris is a great gunslinger, along with his trusted companion played by viggo mortessan are hired to marshall a town, after years of hastle from jeremy irons and his gang of low lives, they suceed in warning them off, but are always on there toes, and when a young women played by renee zellwegger moves to town, a quiet life may be on the cards for the gunslinger, or could it be both of them she likes, things turn when irons is captured for murder, and justice needs to be served, the legal kind, a western from this year that is very old school in its aproach, takes its time and knows how to tell the story, harris and mortessen are great as old friends, and the usually annoying zellwegger comes off ok, irons also doing his dastardly deeds to great affect, some good moments throughout, action and drama combined, and yet again proof the western isnt dead

Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno)
by JackHaving dazzled mainstream viewers with Blade 2 and Hellboy Mexican director Guillermo del Toro returns to his roots for this deeply impressive adult fairytale that rates as one of the best films of 2006.
Set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, Pan's Labyrinth follows the fortunes of young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), as she travels with her pregnant mother (Ariadna Gil) to stay with her new stepfather Captain Vidal (Sergi López) at a remote outpost.
But while Vidal spends his days ruthlessly pursuing anti-fascist rebels in the woods, Ofelia discovers the entrance to a strange labyrinth in the forest and befriends a mystical faun named Pan (Doug Jones), who informs her that she is the rightful heir to his kingdom.
In order to regain her place, however, the young girl must complete a number of dangerous tasks.
But as the line between the two worlds blurs, Ofelia finds herself torn between caring for her sick mother and unborn brother and fulfilling her unusual quest.
Pan's Labyrinth derives its inspiration from a number of sources, including - most obviously - the Grimms' fairytales, Alice In Wonderland and some of the imagination of Jim Henson. But it also owes much to the work of Spanish painter Goya (in particular, his gory creation Saturn Devours His Children), the illustrations of the director's favourite Victorian illustrator, Arthur Rackham, and del Toro's earlier work such as Cronos and The Devil's Backbone.
As such, it's a very adult tale that features some truly disturbing imagery, a consistently melancholy tone and some extreme moments of violence. But it's an emotionally enriching experience that has some very important things to say for anyone willing to listen.
The depiction of the hell of war is particularly memorable and occupies a large part of proceedings, serving as a timely comment on some of today's human rights abuses as well as a reminder that monsters aren't merely confined to fantasy. Yet the triumph of the human spirit and man's capacity for bravery and sacrifice is just as effectively relayed via some of the actions of Ofelia and the rebels hiding in the woods.
The director draws some exemplary performances from his Spanish cast, with young Ivana Baquero providing a fearless presence as the determined Ofelia and López revelling in his role of evil incarnate.
The most striking thing about Pan's Labyrinth, however, is its look, which succeeds in mining the depths of del Toro's wonderfully vivid imagination. The film juxtaposes the ugly with the beautiful in exemplary fashion, creating a world that's fun to explore and impossible to forget.
Some of his creations, too, are incredibly striking, such as Pan himself, a horrific Pale Man (both played by Doug Jones) and an over-sized toad that Ofelia must confront and defeat as part of her journey.
All combine to create an experience that is truly unforgettable, a film that confronts the horror of war and fascism within the cleverly constructed confines of a fantasy adventure. It's bold, inspired filmmaking that deserves the maximum praise. My new favourite movie ever. I'm sure I said that with my last recommendation.

Le Samouraï (The Godson)
by B.Le Samourai is tre cool ! Jean-Pierre Melville's ganster drama about a hitman(Alain Delon) roaming the streets in Paris in search for answers from his former employer as he escapes and dodges the cities persistant detectives and rival hitman. Every corner is a constant look over his shoulder in a life style where only the most coldest and most deceitful survive. Le Samourai is pure genious and was a film way ahead of it's time. In the tradition of suspenseful crime drama's this film carries tension in every scene and is done so well. Delon is as cool as they get playing a lonely, stolid, hitman with a monotone voice who's empty stare holds more to the eye. His faithful companion, a finch in a cage that keeps him company in his sad and reclused apartment. This is a great film that delivers masterfully, it can be easily seen with similarities of future films in the same genre. This was probably one of the films that might of inspired Luc Besson to create Leon in "Leon the Professional."
SO surprised many of my friends on my list say they are "not interested". Big mistake !

Oldboy
by xGaryDaesu Oh is a drunk and a philanderer, but otherwise a fairly typical husband and father. That is until one day he is kidnapped and imprisoned in a cell for 15 years with only a TV set for company and no word of explanation. One day he wakes up on the outside with only a wallet and a phone, and he sets out on a single-minded quest to find out why he was imprisoned and extract bloody vengeance on those responsible. The second part of the Vengeance Trilogy by Chan-wook Park, Oldboy is a bizarre and brilliant film. It constantly wrong foots you and messes with your perceptions, and contains the kind of revelation that makes the kind of so-called plot "twists" of most films look gimmicky and inane. This is the kind of film that blows you away and makes you realise you've been watching the WHOLE THING from the wrong standpoint. As for Min-sik Choi's performance, astonishing is the only word for it...the way such intense emotions and motivations are constantly shifting without ever feeling contrived or forced is just spellbinding. It combines art and extreme violence in a way that reminded me of A Clockwork Orange, but BETTER. It's also stylistically on the same level as Fight Club and is absolutely riveting from beginning to end. A totally flawless modern masterpiece.
Stop...hammer time!
