Michael's Favorite Movies

Vertigo Vertigo PG
My favorite movie and Hitchcock's masterpiece! This film is brilliant in every way. A very personal film, it is an in depth look at a man's descention into madness all in the name of love. A haunting love story, a murder mystery, a ghost story...all rolled into one. Everything from the colors, the atmospherics, the grande scenery of the San Francisco, the unique shots Hitchcock has chosen are perfectly pieced together. The music is the most engaging and haunting score I've ever listened to. Watching the classic "everyman" Jimmy Stewart transform into a lovesick obsessive is as scary and real a performance as there has ever been. It's a movie about obsession and the film itself will only haunt you...even possibly strike a personal chord with you. I know I felt a connection to the film in many ways and it can be a scary realization as to how far we will go to satisfy your own desires. It's definitely a slower paced movie, driven by mood, music, visuals, and well crafted dialogue. If you haven't seen this movie, be in the mood to watch something character driven and methodical. Do not expect his usual action packed works. It's in a league of it's own, possibly a genre all its own (at least for that time). This may be the only film, along with King Kong, that can hit me with such strong emotion. Very personal to Hitch...and very personal and important to me.
Rear Window Rear Window PG
One of my favorite movies. There was really nothing like "Rear Window" when it was released. The whole film takes place in one setting, New York City's Greenwich Village courtyard. The premise...Jimmy Stewart is a peeping Tom of sorts who watches his neighbors relentlessly out of boredom. Simple enough? Throw in a murder mystery and some of the best suspense sequences in movie history and you have "Rear Window". The most creative aspect of the film is that you get to be a true voyeur in this film, seeing everything Stewart sees through his own point of view. You watch through his own binoculars as if you are there. We've all done this and the twist of the whole thing makes it feel real...that this could actually happen to those whose eyes wander where they aren't invited. Often imitated but never duplicated. Brilliantly cast, written and shot. The remastered version on DVD is vibrant and as beautiful looking as any film that has come out today.
