I liked this flick. after reading some of the negative reviews this movie has received, I am left with one thought...people who expect too much realism from a comic-style movie will be sorely disappointed every time. for those who love the quirky, exaggerated style of such films...view away!
The Dark Knight The Dark Knight PG-13 5.0 Stars
Yup...great movie (I know this comes as a shock ;). I love the societal depth of this film in general. Christian Bale is still the coolest batman ever and Heath Ledger left quite the legacy with his performance as the joker. Awesome!
The Wackness The Wackness R 3.5 Stars
It's strange how this movie has such honest and realistic moments as well as overly idealistic ones. it was definitely an entertaining film and pretty different, but it just didn't have the feeling of greatness. still, I'm convinced that Josh Peck is a talented actor.
Wanted Wanted R 4.0 Stars
Office Space meets Fight Club meets Shoot 'Em Up. this movie is ludicrous, humorous and cool from beginning to end.
Becoming Jane Becoming Jane PG 3.5 Stars
Oh, it's pride and prejudice without the happy ending (which I guess was kind of the point). lovely in many aspects, but quite bittersweet. I actually enjoyed the acting and the chemistry between the main characters much more in this than the recent version of pride and prejudice.
Boy A Boy A R 4.0 Stars
An intellectually stimulating and dynamic film about a man struggling for redemption after spending many years in the UK juvenile prison system. the movie takes the viewer through periods of darkness and hope, and transitions smoothly between the past and present. ultimately showing that sometimes there are not only several sides to every story, but also many possible outcomes.

Words cannot describe the love i have for this movie. excellent concept, acting, and music score. "you heard me rapping right?"

Beautifully inspired! this movie encompasses all the feelings of listening to The Beatles' musical stylings while adding equally striking visuals. it is intelligent, complex, poetic, and psychedelic. also, like a Beatles' song, there were some parts that left me a bit baffled (but mostly in a good way). the cast was wonderful and talented. I don't think the movie has a weak storyline as some suggest, but rather one that depends upon lyrical interpretation, which in some spots requires a little abstract thinking. I would definetly recommend watching this one (preferably trashed ;).
Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) 3. Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) R 5.0 Stars
Original and divine! the director draws on many sources (history, fairy tales, mythology, psychology) to create this darkly imaginative and inspired film. it is really a work of pure art.
Sin City 4. Sin City R 5.0 Stars
Multi-plotted and original...no loose ends left untied. just awesome!
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King 5. The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King PG-13 5.0 Stars
Epic...my favorite of the three. the best series of movies ever made with quite a lot to say about the essence of humanity. one of the few times the sequels didn't suck.
Moulin Rouge! 6. Moulin Rouge! PG-13 5.0 Stars
I adore this movie. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor have perfect chemistry in this creative tale with a little of everything; love, humor, tragedy and insanity wrapped up with perfectly utilized remastered hits from the 80's and early 90's. masterfully done and surprisingly moving!

This bleak tale of revenge set in a small English town sees Paddy Considine leaving the army and returning home to extract brutal revenge on a group of small time drug dealers who abused his retarded younger brother while he was away. This is an unusual revenge thriller as it often looks more like a slasher flick; Considine is obviously an unstable murderer who has been trained to kill and he systematically executes each of his victims in a very horror film style way. Except in this case his victims are a bunch of unsympathetic scum bags who you can't help feeling probably deserve their fate. In this way the film throws up many mixed emotions as you're never quite sure who you are supposed to be rooting for! But the real kick in the gut is provided by Shane Meadows; he directs very much like a documentary photographer cataloging the grim reality of working class small town life. The actors involved are ugly. They have bad hair and cheap clothes. In other words they look like REAL people, not Hollywood's glamorized, sanitized version of them. As such you feel you are right there in the thick of it, actually witnessing these gruesome events rather than just watching a piece of entertainment. It won't be to everyone's tastes as it's quite a tough movie to sit through because of its extremely grim subject matter, but ultimately it's a very powerful piece of work.

Apparently this film was one of the first to use the "flashback from multiple perspectives approach", so it is historically and creatively significant for that. However, I found the acting style of Mifune, as the bandit, to be a distraction more than anything else. The use of the "medium" to convey one perspective was a highlight for me. Overall an interesting movie, but one that I expected more from.

Professional contract killer Martin Blank decides to stop off at his high school reunion while out on a job and rekindles an old flame in the shape of Minnie Driver. Part romantic comedy, part post-Tarantino noir, this is the kind of cinematic hybrid that can sometimes go disastrously wrong (Gigli anyone? Thought not....) but this brilliantly written example is not one of them. The dialogue is witty, snappy and insightful, it has likeable characters played by a great cast headed by John Cusack at his most charming and who shares a real chemistry with his co-star. There are also some great supporting performances by Dan Aykroyd as a rival hitman, Alan Arkin as Blank's unwilling psychiatrist and Joan Cusak as his kind of post-modern old school noir style secretary. Add brisk no nonsense pacing and well handled set pieces and you have a smart and funny black comedy that works on every level.
If you liked Lucky Number Slevin, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or Shoot 'Em Up check this out. It's better than all of them.

I recently bought this flick, mainly do the the reviews I read here on Flixter. While all in all worth a watch, it did not live up to the hype I read. Perhaps I was expecting to much from Bale. IM a Huge fan of his work and that was another deciding factor in my purchase. I can see a difference a few years have made in his acting ability. Like I said its worth a watch but I should have saved it for cable.

Based on a true story: Quite disturbing, unnerving and mind-wrenching. How a bunch of misfits find each other and end up killing people. Its scary, because youll never know how many sickos there really are in this world. How could these teens have so much lack of better judgement??

For me I just think that this shows how being stupid can be scary. Theres a scene where I found myself very uncomfortable while watching a guy look up to another guy... and suck his blood with so much longing... Its... so... sick... I mean come on how many people have you met that looked up to someone else and followed them around like they were that persons pet dog? and perhaps thats the awkward truth with society, it happens everyday, just not this sick and twisted..

Anyway, 5 stars for making my skin crawl and wracking my brain.

This is movie art at its finest and in the simplest form.
It's amazing how much this movie has accomplished with such a low budget.
Eat your heart out, all you mega-movie productions out there, and feast your eyes on this quasi-masterpiece put together almost from scratch.
It has almost everything you could ask for in a movie. A great concept (one of the best, in my opinion), a terrific mind-blowing plot (with such a great concept there was almost zero chance of screwing the plot up), and also some very good performances (not top-notch ones, but quite good all the same).
The only reason why the above rating isn't a full 5 star one is merely because of the poor special fx in some of the scenes. I know they couldn't have possibly made it any better since I'm sure they lacked the means to do so. But still, it is enough to make it lose half a star.
And, trust me, half a star doesn't mean jack shit in this case, as this movie's already great as it is.
    Art from (almost) scratch...
    You gotta respect that.

    Williem Dafoe plays the reclusive detective in this movie. He is drawn into the case of a serial killer who is enacting anamorphosis - a painting technique that manipulates the laws of perspective - turning his human victims into sick sculpturesque works of art;

"Detective Stan Aubray (Willem Dafoe) is in charge of investigating and catching a serial killer on the loose in NYC. The elusive murderer arranges his victims in elaborate settings that include clues to his identity. Aubray is confounded not only by the killer, but by his ambitious young partner (Scott Speedman) and a mysterious woman (Clea DuVall) who has ties to his own past." - depplover63

First of all, I've got a confession to make... I can't not like it.
And I gotta say I even felt a slight temptation to stretch the rating a little further. Not much further than the one you see above, but nonetheless further.
Fortunately, I ended up coming to my senses and decided I should stick to my impartiality as far as movie ratings are concerned.
(Trying hard not to let my addictions undermine my judgement. At least around here, I am.)
So... I guess you may already suspect that I'm probably not the best person to recommend an X-Files movie.
Yeah, sure, I liked it. But as it turns out most people have found it to be terrible.
Why?... Beats me... Maybe it's because they've never seen Decoys. Or even Slip.
    Lucky fellows!
    Oh, and by the way...
I've been reading some reviews around here and a lot of die-hard fans say this film didn't feel like the series at all. Well, I gotta say I do not agree with 'em. To me it felt like a huge (in a good way) episode. And I don't know if people remember or not, but the series wasn't exclusively about aliens. It was about all things paranormal. Which is why I think the subject dealt with in this new instalment fits perfectly in the series' general theme.
It did feel like an episode. Only not one of my favorites. And to be fair, the same thing happened with the series. Even though some episodes were better than others, they always felt like The X-Files.
At least to me they did.
But the thing here is... It just wasn't one of my favorite subjects. Not spooky enough and too down to earth for its own sake. And that's exactly why I can understand the fact that so many die-hard fans didn't like this movie (although I still fail to understand the 'terrible' part). They were probably expecting a goosebumps inducing film and all they got instead was a not so spooky one.
Well, that's what you get with a theme as broad as the paranormal.
And ok, maybe they could had made it a little eerier. But then again if they had done so, the above rating would had also been higher.

Wrong subject (even though adequate) and a too-soft approach. Two things I would change in this movie if I could.

(Man... That 3 stars rating... It would have really broken my heart if only I had one.)
    What to say?...

Some fans liked it; a lot of fans didn't like it (or so it seems). Some non-fans liked it; a lot of non-fans didn't like it (or so it seems).

    Well...
It seems to me this one has "'watch it at your own risk' material" written all over it.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
    4.0 Stars by xGary
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford is a bit of a mouthful, but it's titled perfectly. The script is extremely literary and the title is deeply ironic and highlights the fact that real life bears little resemblance to the simplistic interpretation of events that "legends" present. In fact it was Ford's disillusionment in his dealings with the man compared to his childhood hero worship that probably contributed greatly to the resulting killing; that and his own wish to be revered as a "hero" himself. The cinematography is simply beautiful, the film resembling a period photograph come to life. The train robbery scene is one of the most visually stunning pieces of cinema I've ever seen. The performances are also top notch, particularly Brad Pitt whose intense and intimidating interpretation of James once again proves that given quality material he can more than deliver the goods. True, it's rather slow moving and talky, but as such it's a completely different take on one of the most oft filmed stories in cinema, and also one of the best.
Short on action, yes, but long on depth, intelligence and beauty.

This seemed a lot better before having read the book. But now that I've read it, I just can't bring myself to enjoy it as much as I did back when it was released.
Saw it again just a couple a days ago, and... Well, it doesn't do King's book justice at all. They just weren't able to catch its thrilling atmosphere, it seems. Nor its main concept, for that matter. They changed a lot of things in the story, which I think was a huge mistake.
Don't get me wrong, though. The original story's so long that they would have no choice but to change it at least a bit while writing the script. Otherwise, they would have been left with an afternoon movie marathon instead of a regular one. But the thing is, they changed some things that should have by no means been changed. And worse... They changed it in order to make sure the audience would understand the plot. And that's pretty much the same as calling people stupid.
They messed with a lot of things concerning the story in the book, but the worst move of all was messing with the ending. By doing so, they changed its essence completely and screwed its concept to a point of no return. And all for the sake of a good old Hollywood-like ending.
    Big no-no right there.
If one can't change things for the better, I say don't mess around and stick to the plan. Now that would have been a nice, smart move.
Anyways... Despite all the mistakes concerning this movie, the story's still good enough in the overall. At least until the last 10 minutes or so. Then things really start going down the drain.

And to think this movie could have been so much better than it turned out to be...

Bet you'll like it a lot more if you haven't read the book yet.
A little pissed off here. Should never have watched this movie the second time around.

Watch it only if you haven't read the book yet.
