Mulholland Drive 5.0 Stars
By far, the best movie of the new millenium. It's the most fascinating movie I've ever seen, and I have watched it countless times. It is addictive, but I don't really have to keep watching it to have it seared into my retinas. It's haunting enough. David Lynch turns out his best work, topping even Blue Velvet, and Naomi Watts gives what is probably my favorite performance of all time. She really is our greatest actress, so don't screw her up Hollywood! This may not be a film for everyone, but I have to recommend that everyone see it, just because it's had such a profound impact on me. See it!

Day Night Day Night (2006,  G)
Day Night Day Night 5.0 Stars
The best movie of 2007. I was completely enthralled and moved. I was on edge for hours after, and I'm not completely sure why, but I think it has to do with the skills of the filmmakers, and their understanding of and compassion for humanity. Director Julia Loktev and actress Luisa Williams deliver incredible film debuts, and come off as seasoned pros. Loktev's finds the perfect blend of potent realism with hallucinatory surrealism, without cancelling each of them out. I also loved her meticulousness and attention to detail, while at the same time she was spontaneous. Going guerrilla style out on the streets of time square must have been one of the most exhilirating filmmaking experiences, and while watching it I shared their enthusiasm. The film's conclusion is completely shattering and wonderous. This movie made me happy to be alive. See it now.

Simply stunning. Everything that went into the making of this film displays the a lot of heart and skill. This is one of the few "big" movies I have seen that has been able to achieve such a realistic tone. All the actors are amazing and are so naturalistic. I can only describe this as a beautiful work of art. It will change the way you look at life. Also, it's probably the most deserving Best Picture winner of all time.

This movie never gets old, and will never get old. The comedy is masterful, the music is toe-tappin, the action scenes are jaw-dropping. At 2 1/2 hours, it's not a second too long. This is a masterpiece.

Last Days (1998,  PG-13)
Last Days 5.0 Stars
An achingly beautiful poetic film. It realistically crafts a rare moment in time, highlighting everything that is interesting about it, and simply allowing you to feel situation rather than preach about it. There are so many priceless moments scattered throughout. Michael Pitt's performance is incredible, and his musical contribution in which he performs one of his own songs makes for one of the most poignant and moving moments I've seen in a film. The rest of the cast is great as well. It's completely enjoyable for me from start to finish, and one of my favorites. A great film.

I have no hesitation in calling this film a masterpiece. Every shot is filled with cinematic gold. Of course, the acting and directing are top notch, and watching the characters is about as fun as movies get. The cinematography is quite beautiful, and nothing in this film would sway you from thinking that it couldn't have been produced in the golden age of Hollywood (it wasn't in case you didn't know). An original, touching, and bizzare tale.

Southland Tales 5.0 Stars
Quite possibly the funniest movie I have ever seen. This was an absurdist masterpiece. It was like a combination of every sci-fi movie ever made, the absurdity of David Lynch, and the hilarity of Tim & Eric. Richard Kelly is my new hero. He actually had the balls to make the subversive actually-crap genre movie/spoof that every filmmaker dreams of making. He is a genius. The acting is pretty much perfect, although it's actually awful by conventional terms. But that can be said about the whole film. It really transcends cinema.

Not a bad film at all, just a massively unconventional one. Don't enter with any pre-conceived notions about it, just keep an open mind 'cause sometimes you just "never fucking know". Brest, Affleck, Lopez and everyone else involved deserve to be properly commended for their work on this film. This is a unique cinematic experience that needs to be seen by all.

Shoot 'Em Up (2007,  R)
Shoot 'Em Up 5.0 Stars
An absolute masterpiece. This is the action film that Hollywood has been trying to make for years (but unfortunately they were wasting they're time on stuff like character development, credibility and relevance. Ridiculous!) Every single action sequence - no, every shot of this film is mindblowing. I spent the entire 80 minutes laughing and cheering. Director Michael Davis and the cast knew exactly the right sense of humor to use. Whereas another action filmmaker would toss in comic relief characters or fart jokes to have his film hailed as "funny", Davis realizes that the whole concept of an invincible badass pumping baddies full of iron in impossibly awesome ways is inherently hilarious. In fact, the film embraces and deconstructs every element and cliche of the action genre, with endlessly amusing results. Also, the script is made up entirely of one-liners and witty anecdotal asides. Expect every line to end up in the IMDB memorable quotes section. See this movie, but bring an extra pair of underwear.

Utterly riveting. This film will take you on a journey that will have you come out a better person on the other end. It is just so confrontational and troubling that you can't help but ponder your own life and practically everything around you. It covers so much ground. It really takes advantage of the possibilities of cinema and offers a theraputic analysis of our own sexual identities. Sure, it's probably way beyond my maturity level, but I can't deny that I could relate to the character struggles. This is a universally great film.

Magnolia (1999,  R)
Magnolia 5.0 Stars
Best movie of the 90s. PT Anderson successfully weaves together the experiences of 9 or so main characters from one day. But don't be fooled, this is ONE story. Everyone is connected. The connections/coincidences are poignant rather than superficial (unlike the ripoff Crash). What can I say? Everything about this film is perfect. The story is everything I hope for in a drama. Conflicts that are believable and involving, characters that are all different but relatable, thematic strength, emotional power, and an overall enjoyable experience. And as for the execution, there is nothing I can fault it for (and I dare YOU to!). Just stop reading this and watch the movie.

One of David Lynch's greatest films, and one of my favorite dramas of all time. There's just something about it that makes it more enjoyable than everything else out there. All the characters are perfectly realized, due to the amazing acting and direction. The film is a brilliant deconstruction of the mystery genre, but really it's a totally original creation that stands on it's own. The inner and outer conflicts are so involving and fascinating to watch. You cannot wait to see how it unfolds, and it unfolds perfectly. Masterpiece.

One of my favorite comedies of all time. There's not much for me to say about it though, because it's a perfect film. I could list off and praise every element of it, but that would take too long. However, I give special props to Jeff Bridges and John Goodman, for bringing two of the greatest characters in film history to life - brilliantly. Just see it, and have your life changed forever! :)

One of the best love stories committed to the screen. The thing that strikes you about this one is the painful realism, following a man's moment-to-moment life in all its awkward glory. Upon reflection, I realized that every single moment was hilarious. Adam Sandler proves that he's great when he's not constrained by formula, and the performance he gives here is manic, unsettling, hilarious, and frightening. In this film, he truly is the everyman, revealing the truth about us all that most other films don't dare to poke with a 10-foot pole. And he falls in love with Emily Watson... how could you not?

Completely blown away. Herzog has perfected his style with this one, and I was totally drawn. The story was pretty confusing the first time around, but in terms of going on the visual/visceral ride, I was on board. Everyone, just break down and buy the Herzog/Kinski box set.
