Death Race
by MichaelEvery now and then, a sadistically violent, testosterone injected action film (lacking brains, a "good" story, and character development) comes along in all its brawny glory and just works. DEATH RACE is one of those films.
What suprises me most is that the film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the much bashed shlockmeister behind Mortal Combat and AVP. People have compared him too Uwe Boll as one of the worst directors ever... I never agreed with this. I saw potential in him with EVENT HORIZON, and now DEATH RACE, with it's tight direction, editing, and style makes me curious as to what Anderson will put together in the future. I know he is capable of making good films. Wheater he does or not is up to him.
And we've got an excellent cast here aswell. Jason Statham (who brings his usual charisma, which is far from a bad thing), Ian McShane, and Joan Allen as the villian? Very good decision (though she is slightly underused).
So DEATH RACE isn't high art. No suprise there... but its a first-rate action picture that provides the right amount of thrills and gruesome kills. Hell of a way to end the summer movie season.I know Paul W.S. Anderson films don't usually scream "see me," but DEATH RACE is a lot of fun, and if you know what to expect (Cars and Death!) you may end up enjoying yourself quite a bit!

Frozen River
by MichaelA gritty independant gem. FROZEN RIVER feels almost like a documentary, with it's shoe-string budget, HD shakey cam photography, and very believeable performances. A gripping story and lush snow-covered locales reminded me a little of Fargo, but there is no dark comedy, or comedy of any kind here! Expect to be saddened and a little depressed, and you may be truely surprised.
Melissa Leo gives easily one of the best performances this year. Lets see if she's remembered come Oscar time. Here's one worth looking for. A great first effort from director Courtney Hunt, featuring one of the year's best performances.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
by JensThe pilot for the upcoming computer animated Star Wars series about the Clone Wars between Episode 2 and 3 is actually a lot more fun than the first reviews made everyone believe. If you're a fan, that is. Everyone else has every right to ignore this movie. But people enjoying to hear more stories from George Lucas' universe far far away that haven't been told yet could really get a kick out of this. The animation is simplistic on purpose, there aren't many facial expressions, the soundtrack reprises some of John Williams' scores but also sounds a bit too modern at times and some of the dialoges are rather weak. On the other hand, there is so much action, basically non-stop, and that's just pretty damn fun to watch, bringing Jabba The Hutt into play actually brings a nice feeling of familiarity into the film. It's no outstanding movie making, but I had a good time with this and am looking forward to the show. Okay, half a star comes from fanboy me. Sue me.
Hey, you should really see this if you like Star Wars, the cartoon show, expanded universe and especially the prequels.

Doomsday
by ToddDoomsday is a mixture of "Mad Max", "Escape From New York" and...Whoopi Goldberg's "A Knight in Camelot". What!?!? Did he just say that??? Its true! This way gory movie (way WAY gory) takes ideas from many a film. (I think I may have even seen some "Lord of the Rings" in there!) But hey, it IS fun to watch. The graphics are great as is the action. You'll also see a few classic actors. Just make sure to prepare yourself for things playing out that simply don't make sense. Here's me playing out the role of a hero running for his life from cannibals on motorbikes; "OH no i'm going to die! Ooooooo but that one guy fell down and may have broken his neck trying to crush my brains and possibly rip my arms off. Ooooooooo...ouch....man-o-man....he just flew and then pop...mannnn...buuurn. I think I'll just sit here and soak in what just happened for a minute....". Annnnnd, scene. This is no exaggeration, you will see dumb things like this ALOT... Oh, and did you know that the greatest threat to impenetrable tanks are arrows and clubs? Holy Moley!
I recommend you watch this ONLY to count all the things it stole from previous films.

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others)
by JensGermany's latest Oscar winner for best foreign film, having snatched it from Pan's labyrinth, truly lives up to all the praise it received. The acting is outstanding (especially the late Ulrich Mühe, but also Sebastian Koch and Ulrich Tukur), the script sincere, intelligent and thrilling, portraying a realistic DDR regime of the 1980s and how it kept an eye on its people's private lives. The filming and editing is top notch as well, especially the exciting second half is brilliant. It's a slow movie and requires concentration and an interest for the politics of this time from the audience. The result is extremely rewarding though. One of the strongest German movies.
Hey, you should really see this if you like intelligent, thought-provoking and realistic film making.

Tropic Thunder
by MichaelAdvanced screening:
Tropic Thunder is a film I've anticipated (from it's trailers/ Downey Jr's "Blackface" controversy) for quite awhile, but knowing Ben Stiller's hit (Reality Bites) or miss (Zoolander) directing filmography, I kept my expectations relatively lukewarm. Luckily that wasn't necessary because it's Stiller's best effort as a director to date aswell as one of the best comedies of the year.
Starting with the best fake-trailers this side of Grindhouse, TROPIC THUNDER develops into the most uniquely wacky blend of satire/action/ and gross-out I've ever seen. At first it appears to be a straight-up spoof on popular war films, then it becomes a film within a film, then an attack on Hollywood and the film industry in general. Also present are some rather shocking (and hilarious) sight gags (exploding film-crew members, the brutal slaughter of an endangered species) that managed to catch everyone off gaurd.
The main reason TROPIC THUNDER works so well though is it's stellar ensemble cast. You have the likes of Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Steve Coogan, and Nick Nolte all turning in terrific comedic performances that they obviously had fun with. Tom Cruise gives the extended cameo of the year as a studio executive, while Tobey Maguire and a slew of other actors make notable appearences. Ultimately it is Downey Jr. who steals almost every scene as the platoon's very white, African-American squad leader.
Rude, witty, and ballsy, TROPIC THUNDER is a great time at the movies. It's hard finding worth-while large budget comedies these days, but DIRECTOR Ben Stiller, supported by a strong cast and a great premise, has proved himself to be the right man for the task. 8/10I highly recommend seeing this superior satire when it hits theatres. It's one of the best comedies of 2008, and possibly the biggest surprise this summer.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
by JensThis hilarious detective story set in Hollywood's acting high society is so full of great dialoges, quirky one-liners and twists that it's over sooner than you can blink. The trio of Robert Downey (again proves to be one of the most versatile and best actors of his generation), Val Kilmer (incredibly funny as kickass gay P.I.) and Michelle Monaghan (gorgeous and really talented) works so well together, as if they never had other partners before. The whole storytelling aspect of the movie is just fantastic, starting with a nicely 60s styled title sequence and Downey as smart ass narrator tearing down the illusion of watching a movie quite regularly by making it pretty damn clear that you are. The plot is smart, unpredictable and still makes sense in the end, the pace is really fast, sometimes maybe even a tad too fast.
I haven't laughed that hard in a movie for a while, yet was on the edge of my seat about what was gonna happen next. What a great mix of buddy comedy, action thriller and detective story. I want more of that.Hey, you should really see this if you enjoy buddy comedies or detective thrillers. This works perfectly as both.

The Dark Knight
by JensSo, what to say about one of the hypes of the year? That the first 30-45 minutes underwhelmed me a little, where there was a lot of politics and crime talk but not really all that much Batman, which made it almost feel like a superhero stumbling into a Michael Mann thriller? That I kinda missed Gotham City having a unique and at least semi-comic-esque look, like in the old films and still parts of Batman Begins, because it just looked like Chicago (which it was as an intentional choice by the creators, but not what I want in a Batman film)?
No, let's not talk about that. Before you're starting to think I didn't love this movie let's get to the acting, directing and especially and the second half of the film. Holy crap.
How Nolan managed to turn the excitement screw closer and closer with every minute of the movie with the character triangle of Batman, Dent and the Joker was just amazing. The action, the timing, the dialoges, the plot, the surprises: perfect. The whole showdown with the two boats and all twists and turns that included was just genius.
All that was not only thanks to a great script but actors at the pike of their abilities. People like Bale, Freeman and Caine always deliver great performances, but the winners of this movie were others for me.
a) Aaron Eckhart who was a perfect Harvey Dent, for a while even felt like an equally important co-star to Batman / Wayne.
b) Gary Oldman whose part as Gordon was so much more satisfying and interesting than still in the first movie, carried by his wonderful performance.
and then c) there was the late Heath Ledger, who somehow wasn't there. I didn't think of him for a second during the movie, because I was watching the Joker, this insane, funny, creepy madman who was pulling all those strings. He will be remembered and talked about for this role for a very long time.
In short, the second half blew me away so much that it more than made up for a few bumps in the first.
Easily the best Batman movie so far.Hey, you should really see this! One of the movies of the year, no doubt.
