300 (2007,  R)
300 5.0 Stars
Wow... what a spectacular feast of entertainment this was! "300" is another movie adaption of one of Frank Miller's graphic novels, and it has been recreated on screen with awesome visual excellence!

The story is an over-exaggerated take on the true events of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C where a small army of Greeks, led by the insanely brave 300 Spartans, stood firm against an army of Persians numbering in the millions who wish to add Greece to the Persian Empire. The courageous Spartans, led by King Leonidas (gerard Butler) fight off hordes of soldiers, hideous looking mutants, Rhinos, Elephants and even grenade wielding Ninja's to keep their lands and families safe from slavery. All the while Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) stays in Sparta fending of the deceitful polliticians who wish to submit to the will of the Persian ruler, Xerxes.

Sword & spear are sliced through flesh in super slow-motion during the intense, heart pounding battle scenes in which nothing is left to the imagination. Bloody heads & limbs fly through the air as the muscle ripped Spartans hack their way through the Persian ranks in spectacular fashion, with Gerard Butler in fine form with a role that he was perfect for with his ferocious looking battle face and gruff, rousing voice.

Not much of a story to sink your teeth into, but the movie so bloody enjoyable you won't even care. The guys will be loving the exciting action and on-screen bloodshed, the women will be drooling over the perfectly waxed, loinclothed Spartans. I very rarely award 5 stars to a movie, but "300" would certainly be worthy of a 300 star rating on sheer entertainment alone. It's now officially one of my favourite movies and is a must-see movie for any fan of film out there.

Maniac! (1980,  Unrated)
Maniac! 4.0 Stars
A career best performance by Joe Spinell - an actor I only recognized by appearence rather than by name up until I saw this film. He plays the part of "Frank Zito", a disturbed and derranged man, mentally scarred by an abusive upbringing by his mother. He prowls the New York streets seeking out women to kill, scalping them, and bringing back their hair to place upon various mannequins he has placed around his home.

It's quite an effective, shocking and disturbing movie, with plenty of gore, some well shot stalking sequences and a believable psychotic performance by Joe Spinell. It's easy to see why this move gained such a bad rep back in the day, and you'd find difficulty in labelling this film as "Entertainment" with it's indiscriminant acts of violence towards women. But it is a good, and if you can stomach it, watchable horror movie, which has it's memorable scenes. Tom Savini, who also has a brief role in the movie, supplies the films make up effects and produces one of the most disgustingly impressive exploding head scenes I've ever seen! The movie ends strongly too with the films stand-out creepy scene that will stay in the mind for a while afterwards.

In my opinion, it's one of the best Horror movies of the 80's and one of the most disturbing films ever. I'd recommend it to all fans of the 'stalk and slash' genre.

Romper Stomper (1992,  R)
Romper Stomper 4.5 Stars
An awesome and aggressively shot movie focusing on a group of Melbourne skinheads, led by "Hando" (Russell Crowe), as they wreak havoc amongst the growing Vietnamese community in their town.

A thing I liked about it is that it wasn't a preachy movie, and it has been critisized for being sympathetic to skinheads by giving them more of a heart, but this adds some realism to the film and makes it more interesting. What "Romper Stomper" is saying is that if you live a life of violence and hate, it will lead to your own self destruction whether you're a skinhead or an Islamic terrorist, it doesn't matter.

This is the best Skinhead movie out there IMO. It sets an excellent pace from the start making sure things are on the move and that it never gets dull - and it certainly doesn't! Very real and well acted performances, brutal, dark humored and unforgettable. OI, WATCH IT!

A bit of a disappointing entry into George Romero's Zombie saga, this one is more of an action based movie compared to his previous three entries... though saying that, I also really enjoyed it! It's an exciting, fun popcorn movie at the end of it all. It's also the goriest of the four movies and the make up teams have been very creative with their use of the gore, it is truly disgusting at times.

A different movie to what I was expecting from Romero, but it turned out to be a pleasent surprise.

A little Gem of a Horror movie! Really enjoyable and one of the best I've seen in recent years.

The disturbing looking inbred mountain men made this movie for me. They were hideous, disgusting and very creepy in their look and actions. Stan Winston and his team did an excellent job on the special make up effects and props.

There are some good jolts along the way and a few very gruesome moments of gore, and the whole movie moves along at a good pace and doesn't drag on at all.

Highly recommended!!
