Really loved watching this movie. Everyone with the exception of Scarlett Johansson were great. I thought Penelope Cruz deserved that win.

I'm not recommending this to anyone in particular since I like this movie for my own personal reasons. I think Catherine Hardwicke is a good director. I've seen Thirteen and thought it was really well done. I've heard the commentary and I believe that Hardwicke really worked hard to make this film good. The movie has some really corny moments but overall, I can watch it multiple times. Also, and the reason for the high rating, I think Jackson Rathbone is cute, haha ;)

The moment the tickets for IMAX were available, I jumped to purchase two and then took a day off since it's an almost 3 hour movie and the drive would be 45 minutes to an hour. IT. WAS. WORTH. IT. BEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER. I even enjoyed this more than The Dark Knight! Brilliant adaptation. Lots of mixed reviews from fans and non-fans but I find it amazing. The cast was great, especially Jackie Earle Haley. I LOVED LOVED LOVED how they pulled off Dr. Manhattan's story. Just about perfect.

I hated Gus Van Sant, but now... I'm not so sure. The music and the Chris Doyle cinematography also helped this movie. Wow.

My initial reaction was that it was a decent movie, but had its weaknesses. The more I think about it, the more I like it, though. This was similar to my feelings on There Will Be Blood where I didn't walk out of the theater loving the movie, but became more appreciative of it later. I feel that Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, despite already playing a couple in Babel, don't really have chemistry, but are great actors enough to work well together. I didn't like the hurricane Katrina tie-in, but I think the idea of it being compared to the clock was pretty neat. I also felt that they spent a lot of time focused on "regular" Brad Pitt age and then sped through his younger years, although that was how it was in the book, but the ending wasn't much of an impact (the book's ending was much more depressing). The first 45 minutes were great. Tilda Swinton's short appearance was great. I didn't even know she was in it. Maybe not necessarily worth seeing in theaters unless you can't wait.

I can't believe some people didn't like this movie. I think it is AMAZING. Visually terrific, an unexpected GREAT cast, nice music by Underworld, and the story.... I didn't find anything wrong with it! It was suspenseful, scary, tragic. Chris Klein is always a joy, as is Michelle Yeoh. I would watch this again.

Coraline
by Jani"You probably think this world is a dream come true... but you're wrong."
Sometimes a movie is just so amazing, that after you leave the theater, you simply can't start a intellectual conversation about it. This happens every now and then, not so often, but now it did. 'Coraline' is the best movie, by far, that I've seen this year.
Henry Selick, the man behind my ultimate animated favourite, 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', does it again. The story of a young girl, who finds a secret door that leads to a parallel reality, only to find that it could be her worst nightmare, is a genuine feast for the eyes. Stop motion animation at its best. But like I pointed earlier, Selick is the man who can pull it off.
Selick has made a wonderful adaptation of Neil Gaiman original work. Gaiman is also known for his 'Sandman' graphic novels and his work behind 'Stardust' and 'MirrorMask' films. Selick's vision of Gaiman's story is so imaginative that I was often so amazed by it all. At times I wished that it would never end..
So, a bit more about the story. Coraline has just moved to an old house, next to some strange neighbours. Actually, the neighbours share the house with Coraline's family. In the attic lives the amazing Bobinsky with his trained mouses. In the basement, there's the former performing artists, Miss Spink and Miss Forcible. Coraline's parents are a real bore (which many of us can relate to...), writing on their gardening book and neglecting their daughter. So, Coraline is off to find her own adventures. And oh yes, she will find them. She discovers a hidden door that leads to a parallel reality that seems like a dream come true. There she meets her "other mother" and "other father". They are the opposite to her real parents. They're happy, want to share precious time with her trying to make living a joy. They just happen to have buttons as their eyes... In the end, is this parallel world the better place?
The film is full of graphic and imaginative images. The main colors of the film may be a bit dark, even a bit grim. But I find this as a good thing. Why should every animation be so damn colorful and... "safe". Selick's world is a lot more darker, you could even say gothic. But so much beautiful stuff is going on here, all the time! So much detail, even the clothes are so real. The smoke effects... The list could go on and on.
And one thing that nearly blew my mind was the music. Bruno Coulais has delivered one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've ever heard. The music is in my opinion one of the most important aspects of the movie, supporting the wonderful scenes in the most perfect way.
The voice actors are, once again the P word, perfect in their roles. Dakota Fanning in the lead, Teri Hatcher as her mother(s), Ian McShane as Mr B and the so lovely Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), who could've had a bit more screen time, nail it. John Hodgman, as the father(s), I had never heard of before but he gives a performance just as good as the other cast.
'Coraline' is a dark fantasy that may not be suitable for the youngest ones. The story and everything that's going on, is at times even scarier than most of the basic horror movies. A lot of dark humor, exciting storytelling and wonderful visuals result in the best cinematic experience of the year. I give 'Coraline' my highest recommendation, a film that I now can call as one of my favourites.Hey, after 'Popeye'. I nearly lost my love towards movies! But after seeing 'Coraline', I must say that it's back, stronger than ever! 'Coraline' is by far the best movie of the year, an imaginative work that will put Michael Bay & Co to shame. Well, off to see 'Transformers 2'...

Popeye
by Jani"Heeeelp! Heeeelp!"
Robert Altman as the director. Robin Williams in his first feature film role. You'd think that the end result would be somewhat entertaining. Well, 'Popeye' was a real torture and honestly one of the worst films I've ever seen.
Popeye comes to a place called Sweethaven to find his father, meets Olive Oyl and all of a sudden adopts a kid called Sweetpea. And every now and then the cast starts to sing the most terrible songs ever performed on the big screen. I like musicals as much as the next new kid on the block but goddamn! These songs were probably arranged by a bunch of braindamaged monkeys. Fuck me sideways and pull a roll of quarters from my ass!
The cast is a bunch of apathetic nutcases. The acting, all of them together and not to name a few, is one of the worst ever witnessed by my eyes. Their voices, their looks... Awful. I should probably get some therapy for this but I'm pretty sure that I'll cry myself to sleep today. There's absolutely nothing good in this film. No wait, the moment when the screen goes blank. I enjoyed that. Very much.
Now you may ask; "You moron! Why didn't you just push the stop button?" Not my thing, I always watch the movie 'til the end. Even if it would suck more ass the all the asses in the world and beyond. Do not watch this movie!Hey, do not watch this piece of cineshit! If you do, you'll need therapy. Just like I did. I almost felt like I would never want to see another movie again. Felt like something died inside me. My love towards movies...

Once Upon a Time in the West
by xGaryA newlywed arrives to find her adoptive family murdered and makes an alliance with a bandit and a mysterious drifter to unite against their killer. Sergio Leone's "dance of death" is probably his most artistic film; what doesn't happen on screen is just as important as what does. It is almost an examination of a difference in the mindset of the sexes. The only female protagonist, played by Claudia Cardinale, is the only one who truly embraces life, and is willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Robards' bandit, Bronson's revenge driven gunman and Fonda's steely eyed assassin not only expect death, but almost welcome it. This film is not about a bullet riddled slam bang finale; it's about a series of events and circumstances leading up to a single point in time, and is all the more powerful for it. Reeking atmosphere and tension, Leone's visuals have never been better and Fonda who is the true central character of the film is perfectly cast against type, his piercing blue eyes almost the opposite of Bronson's emotionless slits. The soundtrack is perhaps a little heavy handed in places and the 2hr 40min running time may seem a little daunting to some, but it's the perfect western for people who prefer them arthouse rather than action packed.
If you've already seen the Man With No Name trilogy, this is your natural next stop.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
by KevinQuite simply one of the best Woody Allen films I have ever set my eyes on! Thats saying alot, the guy is a movie legend. I would rank this up there with Annie Hall, which is often regarded as his best film.
First off I love how the movie opens up. The scene in the resurtant when Javier Bardem's character suggests that Vicky( Rebecca Hall) and Christina( Scarlett Johanson) should fly to Spain with him and perhaps going site seeing and afterwords "make love" I love how he was so causal about the whole situation and how appualed Vicky was by the suggestion. At the same time Christa embrasses the opportunity. That scene says so much about all three characters and sets up the story perfectly. You can defentitly tell that Allen has complete control over this film.
From there on you see the relationship unfold. It has a very seductive feel to it. So incredibly sexy and provocative these scenes are.Spain was the damn near perfect place to set this film,it really does a great job and seduces the viewer, very effective! It plays this very thin line on relationships. Just how long can a relationship last? How do you know if its meant to be? Can love be free or must it be contained. These are some very important and controversial issues that the film adresses.
As for the performances, well one might say that Penelope Cruz steals the movie. And you know what I think she does, however I was surprised that she didnt come into the movie until the fifty minute mark. It was also nice to see Javier Bardem play a more sane character. He has so much range in this film, through his facial expression one could tell that he had seduced these young girls. Scarlett Johansson didnt wow in this film, probualy the weakest link. Rebecca Hall though, she was in her element. With this and Frost Nixon she has had quite the breakout year.
Overall you cant go wrong with this sophisticated love story. For all you guys out there who might not give this film a chance because its a " chick flick",well shame on you.
Juan Antonio: Maria Elena used to say that only unfulfilled love can be romantic.Check out this sophisticated love story, with jaw droping performances.

In the Valley of Elah
by GaryPaul Haggis' powerful follow-up to "Crash" is a very deep and moving affair, with a typically great performance from Tommy Lee Jones. Not afraid to delve into some touchy issues, this topical thriller asks some genuinely confronting questions about the role of society in modern warfare and ultimately where should loyalty lie. Well written and engaging, though not really appealing to everyones taste. Certainly a more mature and multilayered effort from Haggis, I can't wait to see what he does next.
Well written, deep and thought provoking.

Seven Pounds
by GaryWill Smith proves once again that he really can do anything in this obscurely titled melodrama. This astounding piece of work has no shame about pulling at your heart strings and it does so in a surprisingly witty way that will leave you devestated. More than just a story of redemption, it's depth is almost biblical in nature and provokes the audience to ask some shocking questions about ourselves and the world we live in. Wonderfully deep, with some truly original twists and a very touching finale. Just see it!
A really great tearjerker. Loved it!

Sex Drive
by Jani"You don't know my brother, okay? He's gonna fuck my ass with a roll of quarters!
- What? He's gonna what? With what?"
I'm not a huge fan of these type of movies, I'll admit I've had my share of 'em but after watching 'Sex Drive', I have to say that this is one of the better US teen sex comedies I've seen. Pretty much puts the 'American Pie' series to shame. 'Road Trip' from 2000 stands along with this one as the best of 'em all. 'Sex Drive' just puts on an extra gear..
The story isn't the real deal here. Just another late teen who still hasn't got a taste of the sweet stuff. So he has found a hot chick via the World Wide Web, or what's it called, and is off to get it on!
What I really liked about the film was Seth Green as the sarcastic amish guy. He totally steals the show and delivers the best laughs. I'm not that familiar with his filmography, only remember him from the 'Austin Powers' series but if he truly is this funny in his other films, I just might check 'em out.
Another nice surprise was James Marsden as the older brother to the lead character. I actually didn't recognize him at all at first. He gives a different performance then what I'm used to. Cyclops from 'X-Men', the prince from 'Enchanted'. Now this. A bit on overdrive but still manages to be funny.
The rest of the cast works well also. Clark Duke might be the next Jonah Hill if he does the right career choices, we'll see. But you have to be warned. 'Sex Drive' will probably give tons of laughs at the first viewing but will it stand for another one? Probably not but, as said, will give you a nice 2 hour of simple entertainment.Hey, it's silly, it's simple and disposable! But will guarantee some laughs. Never seen an amish that's this hilarious. Go Seth Green!

Key Largo
by xGaryA ruthless mobster and his gang hold a group of hotel guests hostage during a hurricane on the Florida Keys. Another Noir from John (The Maltese Falcon) Huston featuring the classic pairing of Bogart and Bacall, this film does not quite live up to the promise of these ingredients, but that's a hell of a pedigree to live up to. Making Bogart a do-gooder war hero and Bacall a doting widow takes the edge off their usual cynical, hard-bitten sparring and this overly wholesome approach means that the crackling chemistry they have shown in their other films is compromised. Robinson and Claire Trevor as his soused moll provide the best moments, and his sneering diatribes against Bogie's moral stand are great. The hurricane enclosed setting makes for a nice pressure cooker environment in which the protagonists show their true colours and puts an interesting spin on the usual Noir ingredients. Maybe not the most original or inventive examples of the genre and it misses the firecracker dialogue of the likes of The Maltese Falcon, but it is still effective, atmospheric and constantly entertaining.
Not quite as good as The Big Sleep or The Maltese Falcon, but still great.

Happy-Go-Lucky
by JaniMike Leigh has been always some kind of a stranger to me. Ok, I've seen some of his work but because most of his movies are pretty much aimed at the female viewers, I've chosen to skip most of 'em. The reason why I watched 'Happy-Go-Lucky' was that at least here in Finland, Sally Hawkins performance was considered to be a contender at the Academy Awards. "Performance of the year" was said in the Finnish cinema magazines..
After the first quarter of the film, I wasn't still sure if I even like the character called Poppy. She's so over the top positive and wants to make everyone happy and so on. She does have a heart and a good attitude towards life but I'm pretty sure that I would've got a big headache if I spent a hole day with her...
The film does have some good characters. My favourite was the hobo that she met during the night. That scene also summed up what Poppy really is. Why does she have to help and please everyone? What has made her the way she is? Eddie Marsan's character, the driving instructor was also nice but again, what made him the way he was? A lot of questions was left in my head or then I guess I just wasn't consentrating that hard...
In the end, the performances in the film is the reason why this film should deserve a viewing. Not a film for me but I'm sure that 'Happy-Go-Lucky' will find its own fanbase.Hey, EnRaHa to you all when driving!

Meet the Feebles
by Jani"Didn't you notice you were sitting on his face!
- Well, it was a bit uncomfortable but I thought it was my hemorrhoids."
20 years later and 'Meet the Feebles' is still a hilarious movie! This film was Peter Jackson's second feature film and it makes fun of 'The Muppet Show' in ways you can only imagine. If you consider the Muppets to be the most precious thing from your childhood, do not watch this movie.
From the opening musical performance, I noticed that my feet where whiskering. The movie tells the story of a group theatre performers who are preparing themselves for a live TV show. The only "problem" here is that the characters aren't cute and cuddly... We have a huge hippo who has an eating disorder, a frog that has a drug addiction, a rabbit who can't get enough of sex, a walrus who runs the show and has his own drug business on the side etc...
Themes in the movie are jealousy, addictions, greed. Themes that work well in a crime thriller perfectly but Peter Jackson and his soon to be wife Frances Walsh, with the help of two others, have come up with an absorbing, funny and over the top puppet musical. Worked well for me years ago and still does!
For all Peter Jackson fans, 'Meet the Feebles' is a must see. The film may not be that good looking, in fact it is at times pretty "ugly" but the love for entertainment pours from every scene. When looking at this movie, it's pretty amazing that 12 years later Jackson brought us the first movie of the greatest trilogy ever made.Hey, come on! 'Meet the Feebles' is one of my most hilarious memories from my cinema childhood. A must see for fans of Jackson. Pretty astounding that most of you haven't seen it...

On the Waterfront
by xGaryA longshoreman and ex-boxer has a crisis of conscience when the gangsters who control the union murder a fellow dock worker. On The Waterfront is one of those films that is almost famous for being famous. Nearly everyone can recite Brando's most quoted line, but this infamy means its reputation precedes it which can obscure just how good a film is. And this is not just a good film, it's an incredible one. Brando's powerhouse performance has also overshadowed those of the other members of the cast, but Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger and Eva Marie Saint are all worth far more than just an honourable mention, and the classic "I coulda been a contender"scene is just one amongst many memorable and powerful moments; Karl Malden's speech that provokes Terry's change of heart, the discovery of his brother, the confession to Edie in the boatyard...the list goes on. Examinig many themes in a multi-layered story of corruption, redemption and one man standing up for what is right, On The Waterfront is one of the true greats of American cinema.
One of those films a true cinema lover just HAS to see.

Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior)
by xGaryMad Max 2 is one of that rarest of breeds; a sequel that actually surpasses the original. Like Desperado and Evil Dead 2, it is a big budget reinvention of the previous film rather than a true sequel per se. Mad Max was a powerful if flawed film that never quite lived up to the promise of its explosive action sequences. Once again, the film opens with an exhilarating hi-octane chase as Gibson's post apocalyptic man with no name stumbles upon an oasis of civilization under siege from a group of road predators. The film almost resembles a zombie film, except in this future where gasoline and ammunition are worth more than human life, the human race are being preyed upon not by undead monsters, but other human beings. The Australian outback makes a beautiful but believably desolate future wasteland and Gibson revisiting the part that made him a star has never equalled the grit and charisma of his performance here. The peripheral characters don't get much of a look in and the dialogue is suitably minimal, setting the stage for the true star of the show; the action. The brilliant production design which creates a similarly believable patchwork of scavenged technology became the blueprint for post apocalyptic science fiction; every sci fi film that followed copied it. The fantastic stunt and road level camera work makes for some visceral chase sequences in which vehicles and their occupants are smashed, crushed and sent pirouetting through the air with a sense of real time physics; there are no glossy Hollywood style slow motion pyrotechnics here; just an orgy of automotive destruction! A worthy addition to the tradition of Yojimbo and A Fist Full Of Dollars with a science fiction spin.
Easily the best of the three.

Bubble
by KevinSteven Soderbergh is quite the risk taker! He takes non-actors to play in this film. All 3 lead actors have never acted in a film before or since. With none of the actors having any prior experience, one would think that this movie would a disaster! Well I begg to differ, this film was flat out amazing! I mean the actors in the film impofized stories from thier real lifes into this. So yeah this is a character study more than anything. You can tell that the actors seemed nervous at the begging of the film. As the film progresses the dialogue becomes more interesting as well as the facial expressions, etc.
This is a character study and not a fast paced film by any means. If anyone knows my tatse in movies they know I aprriecate that in a film. Here is a movie that takes its time. Although we arent given much time, just over an hour in fact to know these characters. The story takes place in a doll factory in the Midwest. At first I was thinkg: WTF how can this movie work?? Not all of the movie takes place in the doll factory of course. Just the people that work there more or less. Rose, the new employee is joined by Martha and Kyle have to show her the ropes so to speak. I love the scenes between Rose and Martha, you can tell that Rose makes Martha uncombertable.Rose might come off as sweet as first, but it doesnt take long for anyone to notice that she is one demanding young woman. She takes advantage of the character Martha in the worst way.I assure in some scenes it looks like they could have gone into a cat fight.
The more this movie gets going the more intresting it becomes. The twist at the end makes the movie. Great character study from Soderbergh,he does a great job of making it all feel real.Which I of course loved. Loved every moment of this film, for its characters, its bold apporach, its twist and its demise of its characters! See this film!Hey, check out Soderbergh's gutsy film! One of the most surprising films I have witnessed!

Domino
by Jani"Heads you live, tails you die."
First of all, it's obvious that Tony Scott doesn't match the talent that his older brother Ridley has. Tony Scott does have a great movie in his credits, 'Man on Fire', some good flicks like, 'Crimson Tide', 'Enemy of the State', 'True Romance' and a macho, semi-gayish tribute to Navy pilots, which will be remembered forever, 'Top Gun'. The thing that connects all of his movies together is simply put the action. Like my fellow Finn, Renny Harlin, Scott can do decent action but his star is sliding down because of his mediocre films that he has made recently.
The story of 'Domino' is so weak and uninteresting. How in hell can a story about a feeble model turned bounty hunter get you interested? One reason could be Keira Knightley, who's always a joy to look at... except in this one. All her charm is gone, she's not convincing as the lead so all there is, is a girl who looks like a bastard child of Sarah Connor. You know... John Connor's mom.. From 'Terminator'.
Some "surprising" plot twists are put in to the movie as a weak attempt to make the movie more interesting. But the showdown in the end, the one between Domino's gang, the mafiosos and a billionaire who got robbed is so lame. The thing that aces it all is when Keira copies Rambo by shooting a bunch of people with two assault rifles in her anorectic hands. The recoil would've thrown her on her butt within a second after pulling the trigger. But this is movie magic!
And of course, when there's absolutely no need for a sex scene, Tony Scott puts one in. This is just a mid comment...
The editing and the filters that worked well in 'Man on Fire', gave me a terrible headache in 'Domino'. The camera is too shaky and the bad use of music crowns it all. Bad filmmaking, that's all.
On the positive side, I did enjoy Lucy Liu and the two guys that I remember from the crappy TV show 'Beverly Hills, 90210', Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering. The guys brought some comedy to the movie, portraying themselves which was a nice thing. This shows that "celebs" can make fun of themselves.
'Domino' is by far the worst Tony Scott movie I've seen. I really can't come up with any good aspects that would make the film worth a look. Well, if you're a fan of Keira and her nipples, then you might wanna waste two hours of your life. Or then skip directly to the nipple scene and get off with a 10 second effort.
"It's a great day to die!"Hey, OMG! WTF! 'Domino' is so FUBAR that it's LOL.
