Michael's Recent Reviews

Eagle Eye Eagle Eye PG-13 1.5 Stars
EAGLE EYE ( aka: the worst Michael Bay film Michael Bay never made) is a frantically edited, glossy piece of junk that is, from the ground up (including its theatrical poster which shares startingly similarities to the one for ENEMY OF THE STATE) a rip-off and clone of various other far superior thrillers.

To call this film inplausible is an insult to films of the past bearing the same title. To call it a thriller would also be a complete fabrication of the truth. The film failed to entertain or even hold my attention. The only thing worth noting about this otherwise cinematic dud is a very well crafted chase sequences in an airport.

The chase sequence aside though, this is one of the worst films of the year.
City of Ember City of Ember PG 2.0 Stars
Despite some very interesting visuals and a strong cast, CITY OF EMBER ran out steam pretty early and never became particularly engaging or exciting. This is the kind of film that would have benifited if some focus was taken off of the set design and put towards the narrative and characters. A major disappointment from Gil Kenan, who's debut came in the form of the great MONSTER HOUSE.
Blindness Blindness R 4.0 Stars
Though not the Oscar-calibur masterwork that I hoped for (and Fernando Meirelles no doubt thought he had on his hands), BLINDNESS is a gripping and quite disturbing allegorical thriller with very original cinematography and an outstanding cast. It's not a flawless endeaver (the film definately has it's flaws) but It's one of those films that gets in your head and stays there.

One of the standouts of 2008 so far. Destined to be a cult classic.
Latter Days Latter Days Unrated 3.5 Stars
My sister bought this on DVD so I decided to watch it with her without knowing much about it besides it's gay subject matter.

I'm glad I did because it turned out to be a poignant, insightful, and very original film with a wealth of strong performances and a tight script.
Traitor Traitor PG-13 3.5 Stars
A very solid thriller with a handful of great performances, strong direction, and a few surprising twists and turns.
Death Race Death Race R 3.5 Stars
Every now and then, a sadistically violent, testosterone injected action film (lacking brains, a "good" story, and character development) comes along in all its brawny glory and just works. DEATH RACE is one of those films.

What suprises me most is that the film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the much bashed shlockmeister behind Mortal Combat and AVP. People have compared him too Uwe Boll as one of the worst directors ever... I never agreed with this. I saw potential in him with EVENT HORIZON, and now DEATH RACE, with it's tight direction, editing, and style makes me curious as to what Anderson will put together in the future. I know he is capable of making good films. Wheater he does or not is up to him.

And we've got an excellent cast here aswell. Jason Statham (who brings his usual charisma, which is far from a bad thing), Ian McShane, and Joan Allen as the villian? Very good decision (though she is slightly underused).

So DEATH RACE isn't high art. No suprise there... but its a first-rate action picture that provides the right amount of thrills and gruesome kills. Hell of a way to end the summer movie season.

This film kept me speechless the entire time because I was expecting something overly dramatic and instead of that it's just very serious and realistic, which made everything more shocking. The performances are exceptional and it never once tries to hand out an agenda on such a politicised subject, it just portrays the characters as real persons on a difficult situation.

I got to say going in this not really knowing about it, kind of made it all the more interesting. Watching everything unravel at the start was great. It just takes you right in there and leaves you there.

Ridley Scott is perfect for this type of film, and he has such a great cast. Leonardo is such a fantastic actor and he was perfect for the role, I thought he was fantastic. Russell Crowe was good, he was better in American Gangster imo, but he was quite solid. Mark Strong was fantastic as Hani, I thought he was quite the surprise. He gave a very multi-layered performance, which made his character all the more intriguing. Actually Vince Colossimo was pretty good, what a surprise to see him.

I felt a few things were predictable in the film (the stuff with Aisha), but there were some other things I actually didn't see coming, so it was good in that respect for me. It kept me interested all the way through, which was great, it takes a different direction half way through but it did work for me. I'd recommend this one for sure, especially check it for DiCaprio, he is fantastic.

Yay! I had been waiting for Flixster to list this film since I joined! It was a childhood favorite of mine and a highly engrossing story with suprisingly good performances by child actors (something rare in México) and very relatable (if you were as paranoid as me as a kid).
This film is incredibly worth everyone's time!

Also, at the end of Redbelt, what was your perception of what happened. He was going to unveil it all and then he was presented the Redbelt and didn't because his actions spoke loud enough, or do you think he unveiled it all after the movie ended. Are we supposed to know or is it a mystery like the end of Eastern Promises?

Also, I rented the Conversation, and I have seen Apocalypse Now, and Godfather movies. What other good Francis Ford Coppola movies do you reccomend I see. O I have also seen Dracula before.

I have yet to see Blindness of Snow Angels. I'm seeing Blindness next week. So when I do see them, they'll prolly be on my list too. Allthough I have heard ALOT of negative reviews about Blindness, and I'm not sure why. Have you seen how bad the reviews have been for Miracle at Saint Anna? DANG!

Yeah, you should try and see The Fall as soon as you can, it's really amazing. I love Chiwetel Ejiofor, he is such an amazing actor. I finally saw Children of Men for the first time like a week ago, it was one of those films I was embarrassed it took me so long to finally watch. Same with the Godfather trilogy, I'm watching the third one tomorrow, just saw the first two for the first time. I will be amazed if In Bruges and Redbelt are up for anything, I hope they will be though. But the academy will prolly forget as usual. The Fall should win set design and cinematography, but I doubt it, because it was made in 2006, yet released in 2008. How do they treat a situation like that?

What did you think about Blindness and City of Ember? I plan on seeing them both, as well as Body of Lies, Miracle at St. Anna, Apaloosa, Eagle Eye, Righteous Kill, and Max Payne hopefully soon.

Yea, Traitor was really well done, the whole bus finale I wasn't expecting at all. Babylon A.D. was style no substance, I was really dissapointed. Bangkok Dangerous was really bad, I just love action movies on the big screen, Nicolas Cage does take a guys arm of will a motorboat propellar though so just that alone was worth it lol. Yea, The Fall is amazing, filmed in 18 different countries over a period of 4 years. I REALLY hope Max Payne won't suck. If it's good it will be the first good video-game adaption movie in my opinion. I had high hopes for Hitman, but I thought it was terrible. I was shocked when I found out Max Payne will be rated PG-13, hope they didn't dull too much action out.

Where Danger Lives Where Danger Lives
    3.5 Stars by Veronique
"where danger lives" is one of those rko film noir pieces robert mitchum had been tackling since the 40s after his legendary "out of the past". mitchum, as howard hughes' number one investment of superstars, was craving for better roles instead of the central criminal characters or hard-boiled detectives in most of his movies, so he attempted to demonstrate some diversity by playing a straitforward middle-classed doctor messed with luring but suspicious femme fatale.

this time, mitchum is still the imperious man who fancies challengingly provocative woman despite she might detonate his doom, and he dives into the trap without hesitation jusy as he says in "out of the past"...."BABY, I DON'T CARE!" the first 20 mins of the film is mesmerizingly romantic on the affair between a doctor and lonesome beautiful woman with suicidal tendency. (impersonated by faith domergue, whose fickleness and angelic beauty rival jan greer in "out of the past")...then the gallant mitchum intends to rescue the wretched woman from her seemingly overbearing father(played by claude rains, a brief screen occurence.)....BUT the aging father turns out to be her husband, then the elder man dies of an accidental hit. after that, mitchum suffers from concussion, and these two flee to mexico. gradually, more dark secrets are discovered on the road.

the whole movie might appear like a strip-tease which conceals the crucial details as foreshadowing then bares it all at once as gratitous treats to the audience. there's nothing too unique about it but it sticks to its noir patterns: seedy, shadowy cinematography, un-trustworthy attractive woman and gullible man who is trouble-magnet, then a gruesome twist in the end, so the audience is aware of what exactly to expect. somehow it does have the embellishment of desperado road movie in the paradise of outlaws, mexico.

mitchum doesn't do chain-smoking as he does in "out of the past" but this movie lacks an emulating villain, and the 5 mins screen presence of claude rains doesn't make a competent impact like kirk douglas' whit in "out of the past", even though the woman is devious enough as the bait to man's self-ruin. but inevitably, this movie follows the cliche of saint/demon when it comes to romancing the women, mitchum re-embraces the bosom of the good-gal, maureen o'sullivan. and the metaphor is blatant: red rose for the stimulating bad girl, so the white rose would be the gentle woman who demurely always awaits her beloved man.
"where danger lives" is the milder does of "out of the past"..if you like "out of the past", you might also like "where danger lives" even it's NOT as good as "out of past". still very watchable since it has ROBERT MITCHUM!!! faith domergue is also VERY watchable, absolutely striking, especially at her first shot, lying in the hospital bed, definitely a babe!

All the action I was expecting, and very exciting. A little bit like the Bourne films, but without Matt Damon''s annoying face. More groun up for Shia Labeouf and with the hotness that is Michelle Monaghan.

But smaller parts from Rosario Dawson and Anthony Mackie, who is perhaps wasted here, but still nice to see, and is impressing me with his versatility.

Well cast and well done, doesn't disapoint, even if I wasn;t exactly paying such close attention during the whole movie ;)~

I never laugh a lot while watching a movie since White Chicks!

House bunny is a dumb ridiculously comedy, but with sensible humor. this comedy movie excel in making me laugh every 5 minutes!

The story is simple, direction is average but what makes this movie funny is, Anna Faris!

Everybody know she is an excel comedy actress and she prove us yet again. she steal every scene she is in, her eyes language, her voice and her ridiculously skimpy clothes will bring smile to your eyes! and here they show her soft side too, that's what i like. she is a dumb bimbo with a kind heart.

Katherine Mcphee and Emma Stone is hot, and funny at times. good to see, Colin Hanks without glasses.

Over all, House Bunny is a good past time comedy, and not a shallow one. I'm gonna watch it again this weekend. :)

This movie could have been AMAZING. It had so much potential. It needed to be atleast 3 hours long to delve into all of it. There was no backstory to how the world got to the state it was in either. It wanted to be Children of Men. I gave this film an 6/10 rating due mainly to the entertainment value. Honestly it was one of the most ENTERTAINING films I have seen recently, but quality-wise, it was lacking. It was a guilty pleasure film, much like League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is for me. Not great, but emmensly entertaining. I really hope they release the version Kassovitz made before the 70 mins. was cut on dvd.

I liked the costumes, cinematography, scenery, and the acting; but the plot seemed like it never really went anywhere. There was no major climax, or really no climax at all, besides that the film was beautiful. I recognized pretty much the whole cast, but where did this Dominic Cooper come from all of a sudden? I have never heard of him before.
