The essential tragi-comedy of our generation. A smart, stylish movie that reveals a generation's rejection of the sociological ideals of the 90s. They choose not to choose life. All cast are at the top of their game and Boyle manages not only to make a comprehensible plotline out of the convoluted novel but give a visual look that still astounds. This is to youth of today as Clockwork Orange was to the youth of the 70s.

The Lion King (1994,  G)
The Lion King 5.0 Stars
The best Disney film made in my opinion. Has actually good songs wrapped round a superior story (well when you combine Elton John with the Bard what do you expect). Nicely animated and actually at some points incorporates cinematic devices such as sweeping shots and pan ins and outs, something rarely done in animation. The voice cast is sublime with Irons and Earl Jones delivering serious gravitas to the film. If Walt was alive he would have probably hated it purely cos Mustapha dies rather than Surabi

Léon (The Professional) (1994,  R)
Léon (The Professional) 5.0 Stars
Yet another extremely over the top movie from Luc Besson. Yet unlike most of his other movies, Leon has a beating heart underneath the gloss. The touching tale of a 12 year old orphan befriending a hitman has the potential to be a shallow revenge movie but for once Besson manages to add some depth to the story. By pushing the bond between the two leads, bEsson manges to create a film that skirts on a Lolita-esque relationship but remains with family as the central focus. An ever reliable Portman steals the show with one of the best child performances commited to the screen. Touching and yet nevers skimps on the action.

Gremlins (1984,  PG)

Think Capra with scaly monsters. The thing about this movie is its ability to blend comedy with elements of horror. The end result is a film that may be one of the best horror comedies made. Intensly silly in moments and in some places feeling like a Looney Tunes cartoon yet in some places very tense. The creatures all have their own personalitie and look quite impressive still. The nly complaint is that visually Gizmo is ugly as sin in the first movie. He may be sweet and whistle lovely tunes but frankly he ugly! Luckily that was improved for the sequel. Boasting also one of the most catchy theme tunes ever and starring the strangely attractive Phoebe Cates (though jesus she wouldnt be fun to have around on Christmas). Essentially this a horror film without the gore, and one of the few good christmas movies around.

Secretary (2002,  R)
Secretary 5.0 Stars
An intriguing film. Whilst both romantic and comedic it is far superior to any rom-com. Gyllenhaal shows she has the acting credentials to match her bro and some. Spader plays the only type of charachter he should play, i.e. a sexual deviant. The possibility of this film becoming a sleazy softcore porn is neatly avoided by only having any form of nudity until the end of the movie. Any previous excursion is either funny or awkward. The simple fact my 13 year old sister watched it and loves it proves not only that she has great taste in movies but also that anyone can watch it and get something from it.

Garden State (2004,  R)

A marvelous gem of a movie. An incredible directorial debut from Braff who not only excels in front of the camera by a comlete turn around from his small screen alter-ego of J.D., but also proves himself just as comfortably behind the camera. By using a quirky and more visual style of comedy; check out ice skating crocodiles and knights in armour, a gentle comedy that is inoffensive and yet still very endearing is created. The main advantage to this film is the incredible presence of Portman who shines in this movie so much that in some paces the movie almost suffers when she is not on screen. The supporting cast is also very effective with exemplary performances from Skarsgaard and Holm. A rather forced reconcilliation at the end of the movie almost detracts from the perfect gentility of the movie yet not enough to really impact the story in any serious way. Comment must be made also to the sensational soundtrack that accompanies the movie and helps to build a very strong emotional core to the onscreen action.

Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) (2001,  Unrated)
Battle Royale (Batoru Rowaiaru) 4.5 Stars
Fast, furious and possibly the most over the top violent film outside of a Miike film. Video game violence is what draws most people in but what keeps you there is a genuinly interesting concept. An indepth social commentary wrapped in a movie containing evisceration. Brilliance. The Director's cut contains a few nice additions but nothing worth going out of your way for. The only complaint is that its not as fucked up as the manga comic. But to be honest if it was theres no way it would ever see the light of day over here! My introduction to Asian cinema and a nice intro for anyone whose got a strong stomach or a twisted sense of humour.

The only real word to describe this movie is sweet. Tatou is so charming in her role that its impossible not to love her.An unusual colour pallette contributes to the fairytale aspect of the movie. The movie could have easily fallen into a sickly sweet coma at any point but remains resolute against doing so. Why arent more feel good movies like this. Rather than clumsy slap stick comedy that often invades most rom-coms this manages to be far more funny than it should be.
