No Country for Old Men
R
There was one movie that I was dying to see in 2007 - No Country For Old Men. There has been a great buzz surrounding this film, critics have been hailing No Country as a masterpiece, a classic and a film to be challenged. Things only got better as it was nominated for 8 academy awards, and took home four, including best picture and best director. I was a little apprehensive at believing all of the praise, I didn't want to set my expectations too high, but I almost couldn?t help it when I viewed the trailer and clips over the internet and on television. I have been a fan of the Coen brothers since Fargo, and by the looks of it, they were back in their element, and had directed the greatest film of their careers. I will admit, I watched No Country on the big screen, alone. I had no one to go with and was not going to miss the opportunity to see this in the theater. Right from the get-go the movie is intense, the character Anton Chigurh played by Javier Bardem is arrested and brought into the county jail for processing. However his stay is quite short as he manages to escape by strangling the officer with his handcuffs, and stealing the police cruiser. Chigurh begins his path of destruction with the help of his trusty oxygen tank and stun gun attachment. Meanwhile Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), a middle-class welder is out hunting antelope when he stumbles upon what appears to be a drug deal gone wrong. 3 vehicles, many dead bodies, and a truck bed filled with heroin. After a few minutes of inspection, and after collecting a few guns for his collection, Moss finds one dead man farther away from the others. With that man is a black satchel. Inside that satchel is 2 million dollars, cash, in 10 thousand dollar bricks. Moss can only wonder what to do, but at that point, who would leave that money? It?s a big, life-altering decision, which it seems that Moss did not put that much thought into. Later that night, Moss returns to help out a man who was left alive, but finds that the man had eventually succumb to his injuries. But now Llewelyn has a problem, two men driving a truck have come to the scene, and have spotted his brown ford truck. They slash the tires, and eventually spot Llewelyn running for cover. While avoiding gunshots, Moss manages to get away, but not without a few wounds. Now, fearing for his life, and his wife?s, he derives a plan. Send his wife to her mothers, and flee with the money, hoping to lose the trail of whoever is chasing him. Anton Chigurh is now on the look out for the satchel that contains the 2 million, and is leaving a bloody mess behind him to get to it. Llewelyn soon discovers that Chigurh has found him, and has been to the hotel room he is staying at, not to mention his trailer home. Sherriff Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is caught up in the search for mass murderer Anton Chigurh, and discovers that a man he knows, Llewelyn Moss, is the pursued. Also joining the hunt for Chigurh and Moss is Carson Wells, a Texas ranger who?s mission is to locate either one of the men, or the money. Llewelyn Moss eventually runs into trouble as Chigurh closes in, and Moss also discovers how the mad-man has been tracking him. Now more than ever, staying one step ahead is more important than anything, as Llewelyn experiences one too many close calls. Carson Wells finally tracks down Moss at a hospital, where he warns him that Anton Chigurh is not going to stop, and that to continue running is foolish. With greed being the number one motive, Llewelyn ultimately makes the choice to keep running with the 2 million dollars. With solid performances, and some of the most intense scenes in recent movie history, No Country has, for me, been one of the most thrilling and memorable movie experiences. Bloody, gruesome and bold, this film is over the top, but balanced. I am hard-pressed to find flaws, No Country is almost a perfect movie. My expectations were fulfilled, and surpassed, my mind could not stop spinning after the credits rolled. With an ending that seems almost abrupt, but suiting and effective, No Country For Old Men becomes the definitive film about the consequences of greed. The smallest thing can bring your world crashing down, all it takes is one misguided choice.

American Beauty

Look Closer. This movie is art on film, one of my top favourites, American Beauty truely is beautiful. Immediately you get a feel for Lester's character, as he goes through a mid-life crisis, and tries to reconnect with his family. Lester's daughter Jane is unsure of herself, and her best friend Angela is a outwardly confident teenager. Jane and her new neighbor Ricky become involved, as she tries to avoid her father at all costs. Carol, Lester's wife, is having a meltdown of her own. Her realestate business is crumbling and she begins an affair with "the realestate king". Everything around Lester Burnam is out of sorts, yet everyone seems to think he is the only crazy one. However, Lester is the most rational, finally doing the things he wants to do, and begins his life for the first time. Tragedy strikes this movie, but it is more of a feeling of completion at the end. Things finally come to a close, but leave much for the imagination.

Le Scaphandre et le Papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)
by the dudeJust a brilliant mesh of everything. sound, cinematography, acting, and everything else. I felt emotinally drained afterwards when the film ending. The film asks us if we have lived the way we want to live, and how we would respond if a unforunate situation would happen to us. Julian Schnabel's brillant direction puts us into Jean Do's view of life and through out the film we live through him going through his struggles of everyday. A highly original masterpiece that will make you want to watch it over and over as it absorbs into your skin.

The Bank Job
by KhrisAn interesting piece of film-making... which is pretty entertaining. Once you get past the sleazy and shameless sex, you would realise that it actually made some sense as to the WHY. Based on a true story of sorts, its an interesting take on the Baker Street Bank Robbery which caused a sensation and had Parliment and MI5 going nuts.
Jason Statham goes back home and back in time to 1971 as a small time criminal who tried to hit the big time by robbing Lloyd's Bank and hits big trouble in the form of government scandals, corruption and just about everyone from the MI5 to a local porn king/gangster AND a psychotic Rasta drug dealer out to nail him and his crew.
I guess the great thing about this movie was the authenticity. 1971 London does come alive, and its not something we see often in movies these days, seeing a world city in a different time, not so far back as to call it ancient history, but more so enough to appreciate what its like and how everything has changed radically, from cars to technology to clothing and styles and lifestyle.
You have to appreciate the story and the tension which the crew go through. This is one of Statham's better movies, and the rest of the cast are..... British. XD
Yeah its the same ole thing for all you guys who don't understand a world of the British language. If you could get past the language or are familiar with it (like me) then you can follow the movie quite easily. Which is something else which I liked about it. Its not meant to be an all out twister, a movie trying to out do itself and others of higher grade, but a simple reworking of an event brought to the big screen with a few thrills along the way. In the tradition of movies such as The Italian Job, The Score and other tales of thieves, this would have to be on of the better flicks to watch.Hey, you should really see this!

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse
by the dudeA inside look at the behind the scenes work on Apocalypse Now. I felt it was more of a character study as Coppola fought to keep his sanity along with the cast and crew. Over 200 hundred days of shooting. Script rewrites, actor fees and health, a typhoon almost kept the film from being made but it was made after long hours of hard work. Great documentary into how far filmmakers go to keep their vision and their dreams alive.

The Dark Knight
by CamillePhenomenally Flawless!
Bale's Batman is the definitive Batman because we see everything in this character finally on film. Martial arts skills, cunning, great tactical thinking, forensic application, technological genius to advance or improve Luscious Fox's inventions/technological breakthroughs, intimidating personality, and even a little swashbuckling.
As for Heath, yes he gets credit for his performance as the Joker. But you have to also recognize Jonathan and Chris Nolan for the writing and treatment of the character. It's not just the fact that Ledger makes the Joker so menacing, but the Nolans have given the character this great manifesto that drives its actions. The Joker's stance on chaos, order, anarchy, the morality of the average modern human being make the character so interesting psychologically. The Nolans drafted a complex character and only a perfect performance could've pulled something like this off. That's how difficult of a role this was, and that's why Ledger's performance is so great.
This isn't an action movie. It's a film that explores literary themes of the hero and villain, as well as order and anarchy.Phenomenally Flawless!

The Dark Knight
by KevinThe movie rocks, or should I say The Joker rocks, Heath did an amazing job. I don't think that anyone can do a better job than what he did in this movie. He will forever be remember as the greatest joker of all times. As for Two Face, he was pretty cool but I did not liked how that character ended in the movie. The movie has some negatives things; it was a bit long, the ending wasn't as good as it should have been. But overall the movie was awesome and I give it a 9 out of 10!!!

Mamma Mia!
by SarahDirector:Phyllida Lloyd
Released: 2008
Stars: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan,Colin Firth and Julie Walters
Genre: Musical/Comedy
Country: UK/USA

20 year old Sophie (Seyfried) is preparing to marry her boyfriend Sky (Cooper) at her mother's hotel on an island in Greece. She seemingly has it all; a carefree life, loving boyfriend and happy friends but one thing has been missing all her life; a father.
I have to admit that when we deciided to see Mama Mia!, my family and I, I wasn't sure what I would make of it at all. I know Abba songs like the back of my hand, never saw the musical but was sure I might dance a long at some stage. For sure I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Mama Mia has a certain charm to it that you can't ignore and I'm sure it will be one of the biggest hits of the summer.
The appeal of Mama Mia! is set in the songs and the brilliant cast. All the songs tell sophie's story well and you begin to like the characters a lot, but most likely Meryl Streep's character Donna. Donna is unaware of her daughter's actual father, any of the 3 leading men we see in the film; Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgård. All three do sing in the film and at times it can be quite funny. I'm sure not everyone wants to see the last James Bond actor sing his heart out to SOS or Stellen Skarsgard sing Take a Chance on Me, but really folks forget all that and just enjoy a fabulous film. I know Brosnan took a year of singing lessons and doesn't sound bad at all. Not so sure about the paring of Streep and Brosnan but that was only a minor flaw.
The set for Mama Mia, that being in the Greek Islands looks lovly on screen and some great shots of the actual island on helicopter which really gives you that "summer feeling" and actually made me forgets seriously analysing this film, if you see what I mean. Naturally the cheography is brilliant, most notably with Dancing Queen which, If I had the chance, I would have danced near my seat. Meryl streep can certianlydance around, as can Julie Walters both in their late 50's.
Now for the acting. To be honest I think the acting fitted well to the story. I felt most of the actors played a more laid back approach, as indeed this is not a serious film and shouldn't be taken as to be. JUlie Walters was brilliant to watch and lights up every scene she's in, including her hilarious rendition of "Take a Chance on Me." Colin Firth doesn't really do an awful lot but does sing, which wasn't that bad. Stellen Skarsgard, as most of the cast aren't that bad either.
The script is a plain and simple story but very funny and very well done indeed. I;, sure a lot of it was sidreted at die hard Abba fans but I certainly enjoyed it a lot. What's great is that the film is very funny and can divert your attention away from any pretenious bits that might annoy you, as not everything is going to break into song.
I can't recomend this enough. If there's one film that you should see it's Mama Mia! Can't tell you how much fun I had watching this.
Highly recomended
8/10Worth the watch as it's very funny to watch...

The Road
by KevinThis is the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's latest novel. You might know him as the author of such classics as No Country For Old Men and Blood Meridian. No Country For Old Men was the novel that turned into an Oscar winning film directed by the Coen Brothers and Blood Meridian will soon be made for the screen by director Ridley Scott.
The Road, known to be the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, is an absolutely fantastic read and one of my favourite novels. Me being a huge fan of both Cormac and the book, hopefully, the film version doesn't disappoint. I mean with Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee portraying the main characters of father and son plus director John Hillcoat what can go wrong? This is set to be released in cinemas on 26 November 2008. So I'm just making sure that people are aware of this film. I mean c'mon it's written by Cormac McCarthy!

WALL-E
by DanWow... A true landmark in animation. The first 30 mins are glorious, with an eerie looking Earth brought to life by the animated WALL.E and his little Cockroach friend. It's all very sweet when EVE arrives. The only downfall is the trip into space, although there are still some very funny and sweet moments. The humans kinda ruin it! I guess it needed something else to keep the kids amused. I personally could have watched WALL.E's Earth moments throughout the whole movie, I was just blown away by the realism of the city. The obligatory Pixar pre animation called 'Presto' was hilarious and very clever! Overall WALL.E was a wonderful experience.
A true joy, even though it slips a little in the 2nd act..

Them (Ils)
by CreepThis movie was not the least bit scary to me. The Strangers was way scarier. I don't care that "Them" is based on a "supposedly" true story. I looked everywhere for it and there's nothing that comes even close to what these directors described. I understand that most horror movies "based" on a true incident are far fetched to begin with, but this being based on a "true case" could've been the only thing to save this movie, and make it even remotely scary. "The Strangers" comes closer to a true incident than this does. The "Keddie Cabin Murders(www.cabin28.com)", although not thoroughly explained in The Strangers story wise, is a completely and utterly frightening tale. At the end of "Them" it explains that one of the "actual" killers did this evil deed simply because, and they quote "They wouldn't play with us". Scary right? One good thing this movie had going for it. Well I thought so too only if that were true. I later found out that the whole ending was fabricated by the directors. Again, not saying that this "true story" label being a lie is what makes this movie so bad. It's just that only if it were really "true" would I look at this bore fest in a different light, but on the contrary it's still a sloppy mess on the surface. No real thrills, no nail-biting suspense, not even a good build up. Yes it's true, the acting was good and there's some pretty decent atmosphere, but story wise this blows. As a director it's your job to tell a story through particular shot choices and keep the movie at a certain pace. No matter how many good actors or directors of photography you have, it's up to the director to be able to carry all of this material well. This movie had a lot of prime key elements, and it could've been something really good, but it was just executed very poorly. Nothing here was even convincing enough to send real chills, and to be "truly" scary it must be very believable(I partly blame the lame "sewer ending" for destroying that part). Anyways stick to The Strangers. A much better movie in every way possible.
Read my review. I really DID NOT like this movie at all...

by DaisyThis was an awesome movie, spooky with many parts that make you jump but definatly not a horror.
It has you hanging for what happens next and isnt predictable.
A fast paced movie with doesnt lull in any parts.
Its a tragady that breaks your heart when all become apparent at the end but turns out in sort of a good way.
Even for those who dont like subtitles its still a 'must see'.

The Blob (1988)
by CreepGory and action packed remake! A very fun 80's horror/sci-fi film. Good (goofy)acting, well written, great cinematography, faced paced and filled with gooey slime and tons of bloody outrageous moments. This remake destroys the original. The effects here are very well done too, given that this was made in the 80's, and it never gets too cheesy like most horror films of it's time. The best part I have to say, is when the guy gets sucked down the drain alive, literally his whole body down one little drain. Fu**ing classic!
This movie isn't scary, so don't expect any real chills here. It's just a fun, exciting and gory horror film that's not meant to be taken too seriously. I mean come on, how can you take a movie about a killer jello-like substance running amok serious in the first place? You shouldn't. But it's still damn fun as hell and entertaining to watch. I highly recommend this movie if you haven't seen it yet!

Great movie. If you haven't seen it yet(and you're a horror fan) then you definitely should!

Azumi
by CreepAzumi and Versus is why I'm so excited to see The Midnight Meat Train. This director, Ryuhei Kitamura, has a niche for creating some kick ass style in all his movies. Azumi is loaded with tons of cool, well choreographed action. Lots of interesting(and funny) characters. Plenty of drama, lots of humor, and much stylized violence with blood spraying all over the place. This movie is great. And the final battle scene, I must say, is unbelievably breathtaking. It literally sent chills down my spine. This girl kicked some major fu**ing ass!
Azumi was originally given an NC-17 rating, and although it is pretty violent, I believe the NC-17 rating was given for a rape scene that was later cut out. The blood here does flow, but it's not like it's in your face every 5 seconds. I also believe that The Midnight Meat Train is Ryuhei Kitamura's first American made movie. I just hope it's as good as some other pervious horror reviewers make it out to be. I hear The Midnight Meat Train is suppose to be insanely crazy and twisted. Can't wait to see it!
Anyways, I highly recommend Azumi! Get your hands on this movie as soon as you could.

Definitely see this movie!

Osmosis Jones
by DanielleMurray's character, Frank, is the kind of Homer Simpson-esque boob whose idea of a perfect father-daughter weekend is a trip to the annual Buffalo Wing Festival. His diet consists mainly of beer, chips, and Circus Peanuts, with nary a leafy green in sight. Daughter Shane (Elena Franklin), appalled at her pop's careless consumption, keeps hassling the couch potato to shape up and eat right. But Frank's poor noshing habits and lazy lifestyle leave him vulnerable to illness. Intercut with the tale of Frank's sorry existence is the microscopic view inside him, which reveals a sprawling metropolis of cells, germs, and bacteria functioning under the flailing leadership of Mayor Phlemming (voiced by William Shatner). The "City of Frank" offers Jones' most rewarding comic cleverness, with numerous verbal puns related to human biology and an ample array of visual gags. Screenwriter Marc Hyman makes the most of matching each biological element and function to a real-world urban counterpart. Posters for "Peace in the Middle Ear" and "The Million Membrane March" pepper the background, and everything Frank does, from eating to peeing, involves buttons, gizmos, machinery, and the interaction of countless citizens. Nasty germs hole up in Frank's armpits, liver, and festering toes, while his stomach terminal is as busy as O'Hare Airport on Thanksgiving. Hardly thriving, the City of Frank is in disrepair and marked for destruction by the invading, nasty Red Menace, Thrax (Laurence Fishburne), who slices and burns his way through Frank's tissues with a 48-hour agenda. Only Osmosis and his straight-laced, cold-capsule partner, Drix (David Hyde Pierce), see the threat, and the two set about saving their human host from imminent death despite the Frank Police Department's universal disbelief and disdain. The idea of a man's insides being a city is a wonderfully entertaining one, with opportunities for so many jokes. We're told that the Love Handles district is "the fastest-growing community in Frank," and the mayor (William Shatner) is thrilled to announce they're about to begin construction on a third chin. The Mafia hangs out in the armpits, because that's what most closely resembles a sauna. The Farrelly brothers directed the live portions of this film, while the animated sequences were directed by Piet Kroon and Tom Sito. Personally, I enjoyed the animated sequences (which often reminded me of Space Jam) more than the live action ones, if only because there seems to be more life pumped into the drawings than the real life characters. While Bill Murray is funny, he isn't used to his full comedic extent. Still, the live-action stuff with Murray is amusing, and the animated sequences are basically entertaining, so it's not a complete waste of time.
